Cigarette clamped between thumb and finger, a louche Barack Obama leans back with smouldering eyes and draws smoke deep into his lungs. Taken in 1980, the picture shows Barack Obama as a college freshman The President elect posed for student photographer Lisa Jack at Occidental College in Los Angeles, California Ms Jack kept the images locked in a safe during the election campaign so they could not be used for political purposes When he agreed to model for an aspiring photographer’s portfolio, the prospect of this image reemerging 28 years later as he prepared to enter the White House probably...
  • Why won't Obama release his college transcripts?

As you know, Barack Obama won't release his college transcripts. He has attended Occidental College, Columbia University, and Harvard Law School. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard. So why won't he release his transcripts? A caller to Larry Elder's show yesterday advanced a theory. He says that it's possible that Obama was caught cheating in one of his classes at one of those schools. Your thoughts?

Barack Obama attended Occidental College from fall 1979 through spring 1981 and then transferred to Columbia University in New York. He is not a graduate of Occidental, however, the Occidental College bylaws state that anyone who completes at least eight courses of undergraduate work (or a year of graduate studies) is eligible for alumni status. Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations protect the privacy of student education records. We, therefore, cannot disclose students’ classes, grade point averages, majors or other such information.   Neither Obama’s image nor name appear in any Occidental yearbooks or weekly student newspaper for the...

As an 18-year-old undergraduate student at Occidental College in Los Angeles, Barack Obama was among a coterie of students who spoke regularly with Lawrence Goldyn. Goldyn, an openly gay political science professor who served as a mentor and friend to many of the school’s minority students, said Obama joined him and other students in discussions about social and political issues at a time when Obama was beginning to develop an interest in politics and civil rights causes. “He was one of those usual, straight young men who was secure enough in his sexuality that he was not fearful of being...

The Dirty Dozen: America’s Most Bizarre and Politically Correct College Courses Occidental College’s The Phallus ranked the most bizarre class of ’06 -’07 HERNDON, VA – As college costs soar through the roof—averaging above $31,000 a year for tuition, room & board—today’s college students study adultery, the male genital, and Native American feminism. The Dirty Dozen highlights the most bizarre and troubling instances of leftist activism supplanting traditional scholarship in our nation’s colleges and universities. The growth of these courses gobbles up tons of money and resources and ignores scholarship from conservatives. For instance, books and speeches from the...

Jason Antebi can be offensive. There's no way around it. When Antebi attended Occidental College, from 2000 to 2004, he ticked off many of his fellow students. Antebi was a conservative member of the Occidental Student Government and a Howard Stern-type disk jockey on the Occidental student station. His political opponents, in a failed effort to recall him from his student government position, called him a "racist" and "anti-Semite" (Antebi is Jewish); his door was defaced with the words "You're a f---ing racist"; he was accused of "sexually harassing women." Antebi registered complaints with the Occidental administration; the administration did...

At one time, protractors and slide rules were the school supplies that students were expected to bring to class and young ladies were advised to leave their Barbies at home. Now, the dolls themselves have become teacher aids and not just in the lower grades. “A month before I got to Duke, the Young America’s Foundation had issued its annual ‘dirty dozen’ list, which identifies the nation’s 12 most ‘bizarre and troubling instances of leftist activism supplanting traditional scholarship in our nation’s colleges and universities,” Elizabeth J. Chin writes in the Chronicle of Higher Education. “A course that I teach...

"The Unbearable Whiteness of Barbie: Race and Popular Culture in the United States" is a class offered at Occidental College in California. The course studies ways in "which scientific racism has been put to use in the making of Barbie [and] to an interpretation of the film The Matrix' as a Marxist critique of capitalism." The same college also offers "Stupidity," a class which studies comparisons between the American president and "Beavis and Butthead." At Alfred University, students can enroll in "Nip, Tuck, Perm, Pierce, and Tattoo: Adventures with Embodied Culture." Those in this class will study "teeth whitening, tanning,...

Swastikas for Campus ConservativesBy Jason | December 9, 2005 Occidental College in Los Angeles may epitomize what’s wrong in higher education. Professors cancel class to encourage their students to attend a protest against the “Bush Regime,” campus leaders are forced into mandatory “diversity/sensitivity training,” and some far-Left students seem to believe that a liberal arts education consists of little more than painting a portrait of Bill Clinton. Tuition money – in excess of $40,000 per pupil – is wasted on courses such as "The Unbearable Whiteness of Barbie" and “Stupidity,” a mandatory course for some freshmen, which compares incidents...

Occidental College President Theodore R. Mitchell, a politically connected education expert credited with reinvigorating his Los Angeles campus over the past six years, said Tuesday that he would step down Sept. 1. Mitchell, 49, is leaving the private liberal arts college to become chief executive of NewSchools Venture Fund, a nonprofit group based in San Francisco. NewSchools, founded in 1998 by a group including Silicon Valley venture capitalists John Doerr and Brook Byers, has invested $40 million in efforts to improve public education in urban areas. Mitchell said he decided to take the job at NewSchools because "there is a...
