COLUMBUS, Ohio — A U.S. House hopeful says a former top Romanian spy who defected to the United States in the1970s has endorsed him in a closely watched northeast Ohio race. The campaign of Paul Schiffer said Monday that Ion Pacepa (YON' puh-CHEP'-uh) is backing the Republican in this year's election because he believes Democrats are turning America into a socialist dictatorship like the one he escaped.

When Bob Hagan was a boy people hereabouts equated the coke dust they swept off their doorsteps each day with opportunity, for it came from the steel mills that built this city. After graduating from high school more than 40 years ago, Hagan worked briefly at one of the local steel mills that dominated the local economy. In 1971, he became a locomotive engineer at railroad company CSX Corp, switching rail cars in every mill and yard in the area over the years. The job afforded him a ground-level view of the slow-moving disaster that would tear out Youngstown’s heart...

CANTON, Ohio, Jan. 4 -- The highest-ranking Soviet and Eastern Bloc Intelligence Official ever to defect to America (in 1978) -- who went on to help Ronald Reagan win the Cold War -- has endorsed Paul Schiffer, Republican candidate for Congress in Ohio's 16th Congressional District. Pacepa escaped Romania to become an American citizen. Lt. General Ion Mihai Pacepa's statement follows: "Thirty-one years ago I paid with two-death sentences--from Communist Romania--for my desire to break with Marxism and become a citizen of the greatest country on earth.
CINCINNATI — Years after a wave of construction brought publicly financed stadiums costing billions of dollars to cities across the country, taxpayers are once again being asked to reach into their pockets. From New Jersey to Ohio to Arizona, the stadiums were sold as a key to redevelopment and as the only way to retain sports franchises. But the deals that were used to persuade taxpayers to finance their construction have in many cases backfired, the result of overly optimistic revenue assumptions and the recession. Nowhere is the problem more acute than in Cincinnati. In 1996, voters in Hamilton County...
