Why The Bailout Plan Would Be A Disaster (Oops, No One In Washington Listened Alert)

The Monster Returns By John H. Cochrane Like a monster from an old horror movie, the Treasury plan keeps coming back from the dead. Yes, we are in a financial crisis that needs urgent, determined, and clear-eyed help from the government. But this plan is fundamentally flawed. It won’t even work if we leave aside its horrendous cost and long-lasting damage to the financial system. The additions and sweeteners in the Senate version, and those on the table in the house, make it even less likely to work. A workable plan has to be based on fundamentally different principles: recapitalizing...

Yard work yields archaeological finds for Seguin man

One day this past June, Floyd McKee hauled a load of topsoil from near the bank of the Guadalupe River, on which his property sits, and dumped it on the grass in his yard. "It rained that night, and when I went out in the morning, the yard was covered with spear points," he said. "I got more dirt and sifted it and found a dozen more." Surprised, McKee contacted local archaeologists Bob Everett and Richard Kinz, both of whom soon declared that McKee's property, near Starcke Park, was among the richest Paleo-Indian archaeological finds they had ever seen.
Obama Gets His Own Wedding Anniversary Wrong

So, The One was in front of his subjects of the Black Congressional Caucus in D.C. and was wowing them with the mellifluous tones of his oratory and there stood the little missus. There was that mean Mama all a flutter over her man -- you know, the one that made her proud of America for the very first time? -- and the messiah deigned to notice her across the room. The One thought to bring her before the enraptured crowd and let everyone know that the Dear Leader was having his 15th Anniversary with Michelle the Angry. “She just...

Oregon hospital tells grandpa he’s pregnant

PORTLAND, Ore. - A patient treated for agonizing abdominal pain received this surprising news in the hospital’s paperwork: “Based on your visit today, we know you are pregnant.” Surprising indeed for 71-year-old John Grady Pippen. The staff at Curry General Hospital in Gold Beach gave the retired mechanic and logger the ridiculously happy news this month, along with some pain pills. Hospital administrator William McMillan says an errant keystroke caused the hospital’s computer to spit out the wrong discharge instructions for the grandfather.

Fox News setting up to cover the DNC in Denver got an unexpected shower early Monday after a sprinkler system discharged its water all over their equipment. Sprinklers went off in the Fox Network convention broadcast booth as the crew was setting up its equipment. Firefighters who responded believe the news crew’s broadcast lights were too close to the sprinkler heads and set off the system. The incident was caught on tape. The booth is now back up and working after the soggy incident.

Since then, Wright had had her Social Security and Blue Cross/Blue Shield terminated. The federal government billed her husband, Delbert Wright, $2,941.80 for Social Security paid into their joint account.

Staff at Ben Gurion Airport in Israel have found a three-year-old girl alone in a duty-free shop after her parents accidentally took a plane without her. The parents boarded the flight to Paris with four of their five children. The parents did not realise their mistake until the captain of the plane informed them after take-off, according to police. The girl was put on the next flight to Paris. The parents will be questioned when they return to Israel. "It is usual that travellers in a rush forget their luggage but not a child.
I-TEAM: SWAT Team Honored For Raid On Wrong House (MN)

On Monday, Minneapolis Police Chief Tim Dolan handed out honors to a team of officers involved in a botched raid at an innocent family's home more than seven months ago. The family is upset and their attorney criticizes the awards and questions the timing. Just days before Christmas, the sound of intruders breaking into their home in North Minneapolis prompted Vang Khang to grab his shotgun to protect his six children. His terrified wife called 911. Khang fired several shots at the "intruders" who turned out to be members of the Minneapolis Police Department's SWAT team. The officers returned fire....

When You Should NOT Decline The Damage Waiver [F16 pilot blasts wrong target]

One of the more dangerous phenomena in aviation is an F-16 pilot whose marksmanship is better than his situational awareness. Two soldiers discovered this on the Utah Test and Training Range one night in April 2007. An F-16 pilot lost sight of his target while rolling into a strafing run using night-vision goggles, acquired their rented GMC Suburban instead, and converted it to Swiss cheese.

On this morning's "Morning Joe" on MSNBC, co-host Tiki Barber asked guest Dan Rather about his feelings regarding the recent Jesse Jackson imbroglio -- his "off mike" comments about Barack Obama. The update, known as a "patch", conflicts with another piece of software, the Zone Alarms firewall, that many people use to protect their computers from hackers and viruses. The patch, codenamed MS08-037, was designed to fix a security loophole in the way Windows handles website addresses. It was discovered that there was a weakness with the operating system that could allow hackers to re-route legitimate web pages to malicious websites instead, and leave internet users open to fraud...
