A villager in provincial Russia has caused a national scandal after finding 79 Kalashnikov assault rifles in crates that he bought to use as firewood, Russian media reported on Friday. A truck driver was supposed to take the crates for disposal from the factory in the central city of Izhevsk where Kalashnikovs are manufactured, but instead sold them to the unnamed villager, thinking they were empty. The man who had hoped to use the wood as fuel for his stove called the police and an investigation was launched amid concerns about security at the nationally-renowned Izhmash arms factory, local police...

January 5, 2012Behind Perry's Decision to Keep Running South Carolina team urged Texas governor to make a last stand. Rebecca Kaplan AUSTIN, Texas – It is rare for a politician to announce that he is reassessing his candidacy -- and then continue his campaign. But that’s just what Rick Perry decided after discussions with his family, two top aides, and a South Carolina team that saw a path forward for Perry to win the Republican nomination for president. Even some of Perry’s senior advisers were shocked when Perry tweeted a mere 12 hours after his fifth-place Iowa finish that he...

National conservative leaders are wondering who, if anyone, can stop Mitt Romney from walking off with the Republican nomination after his narrow win in Iowa and his expected comfortable victory in New Hampshire next week. The name that keeps surfacing is Rick Perry, which says a lot about the desperation that the anti-Romney forces are feeling now. [snip] Perry insiders say that the plausible course forward for the candidate is to make this a one-on-one race with Mr. Romney so that the conservative vote doesn't split in two, three or four ways. Around 3:30 AM on Christmas Sunday, a Westlake Village man was awakened by the sounds of a burglary in progress in his home on the 4000 block of Whitesail Circle. Lt. Mitt Romney on Monday dismissed his offer to make a $10,000 bet with Rick Perry as merely "an outrageous number to answer an outrageous charge" _ namely, Perry's claim that Romney made changes to parts of his book. Romney told Fox News he made the bet offer in the weekend GOP presidential debate because of Perry's erroneous claim that he deleted parts of his book, "No Apology," that referred to Romney's support for a health care mandate. Romney said his bet offer was simply meaningless hyperbole.

The losses underscore the challenges the U.S. and its international partners face in overcoming corruption in Afghanistan. A central part of the Obama administration's strategy has been to award U.S.-financed contracts to Afghan businesses to help improve quality of life and stoke the country's economy.

Please make up your mind, Mr. President. You can’t vacillate when spending America’s human and fiscal resources in yet another foreign country without good reason. You said that Libyan leader Gaddafi has got to go. Many of us heard that as your call to action and agreed, "Okay, you’re right. (Or vice versa on the order or your statements. Between you and your advisers...

Mohamed al-Zawahiri was released Thursday along with scores of other political prisoners after orders from Egypt's Interior Ministry, said Nizar Ghorab, who claimed al-Zawahiri was tortured in prison. Al-Zawahiri had been in jail since 1999 after being detained and extradited from the United Arab Emirates on allegations that he was linked to the assassination of former Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. Al-Zawahiri was acquitted on the assassination charges but later was accused of conspiring against the Egyptian government.
