  • Oregon GOP rally behind Trump as only choice

SALEM — In the parking lot at the Republican state convention Saturday, the bumpers of several cars captured the story of some of the hundreds of party insiders inside: Donald Trump wasn’t a top choice, but we’ll rally behind him. Dozens of cars at the state fairgrounds in Salem donned stickers and magnets supporting the party’s slate of statewide and congressional candidates, conservative causes and various current and former Republican presidential candidates. But on another car, and at least one more like it, stickers summed up the second-choice vibe of a few party members inside. One sported stickers in support...

Portland, Oregon (CNN) — John Kasich made a deal to go one-on-one with Donald Trump in Oregon, and he's wasting no time. Wednesday morning saw the release of a new TV ad in Oregon, touting that rival "Ted Cruz pulled out of Oregon" and that Kasich "is the only one that can stop Trump and defeat Hillary Clinton in the fall." The ad doesn't describe the agreement reached by the Cruz and Kasich campaigns that had Kasich pulling his resources out of Indiana, with Cruz doing the same in Oregon and New Mexico. The plan allows for each candidate to...

The leading pro-life group in Oregon today issued its endorsement for pro-life Republican candidate Ted Cruz for President. Oregon Right to Life says Cruz has a sterling pro-life record that it described as “impeccable.” “ORTL PAC is pleased to endorse Senator Cruz,” said Gayle Atteberry, executive director of ORTL. “His record on pro-life issues is impeccable. We can trust that as president, he will do all he can to protect unborn babies. That includes the all-important decisions he would make in nominating new Supreme Court justices. “Both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders,” said Atteberry, “support abortion on demand, from conception...

The presidential campaigns are becoming more active in Oregon, with Democrat Bernie Sanders and Republican Ted Cruz appearing to be the most organized in their respective races for the state’s May 17 primary. Sanders has opened four offices in the state – in Portland, Eugene, Bend and Medford – and his state director, Monte Jarvis, said hundreds of volunteers are gearing up for a major door-to-door canvassing effort in advance of the Democratic primary. On the Republican side, Cruz is recruiting a network of statewide volunteers and has already made a big push to get as many supporters as possible...

SALT LAKE CITY — Donald Trump continues to be the front-runner in the GOP presidential nomination race, but he's languishing in fourth place in a new poll of Utah voters. The new poll by Dan Jones & Associates comes as former Utah governor and 2012 presidential candidate Jon Huntsman Jr. is suggesting Trump has a shot at winning the White House. "People really are hungry for change. They were last time, but it hadn't reached the 212-degree boiling point. This time it has," Huntsman told USA Today's weekly "Capital Download" video series. Huntsman said that's why he thinks Trump,...

Faye Stewart, a county commissioner in Oregon, announced Thursday that he will seek the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate. The Lane County commissioner will try to win the May primary and oust Democratic incumbent Ron Wyden, who is heavily favored to win the general election. Republicans have not won a statewide race in Oregon since 2002. Stewart said he is running because "our citizens are broken, and they need help." He said the federal government has neglected the needs of Oregon counties while running up debt and mishandling natural resources. "We need all of Oregon strong and prosperous, not just...

Republican frontrunner says students and instructors should have been armed. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Saturday channelled the 1970s action star Charles Bronson in defending second amendment rights in the aftermath of the shooting at an Oregon community college that left nine people and the shooter dead. Mr Trump said in a rally in suburban Nashville that he has a handgun carry permit in New York. He added that any attacker would be “shocked” if he tried to assault him, because he would emulate Bronson in the vigilante film Death Wish. Mr Trump criticized “gun-free zones”, saying that the...

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush scored just 4 percent of the vote in the latest national GOP survey, a catastrophically low number that is sure to raise grave concern among the establishment donors who have invested millions in his success for the 2016 presidential race. The poll, released Friday by the Pew Research Center, shows Bush slipping into sixth place behind Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who is at 6 percent. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Bush’s archrival for establishment backing, has twice Jeb’s support, with 8 percent. Rubio is tied with Fiorina, whose tally suggests the steam may have run out...

“…they try to use these tragedies as an excuse to come after the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens. It’s unconstitutional, it’s cynical, and it’s wrong.” Texas Sen. Ted Cruz on Thursday criticized President Obama for the comments he made following the mass shooting in Oregon that left 10 people dead. “Well, unfortunately that is the approach with President Obama on every issue, is that he seeks to tear us apart, he seeks to politicize it and it’s worth remembering he is ideological and he’s a radical,” Cruz stated on the Mark Levin Show. “You know, as his former chief of...

Meanwhile, Oregon Democrats put their support behind former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, though by a slim margin. DHM Research in Portland surveyed 536 Oregonians online July 22-27 about their opinions on the primary candidates. "There’s a real Rambo complex going on here," she said. "You know my favorite one was the guy who after Aurora [Theater massacre] brought his gun to the same theater so he could get the attacker again and he shot himself in the butt," she added, laughing. While all national attention is focused — indeed riveted — on the seven to nine swing or battleground states, a major shift is taking place in the rest of the country: Voters are turning off Obama and onto Romney. In the forty states where the Obama campaign has not spread toxic negative ads against Romney, the Republican is gaining by leaps and bounds and will likely carry a bunch of “non-swing” normally blue states. Specifically, Romney is now three points ahead in Pennsylvania, one point behind in Michigan, and only two points behind in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Together, these four...

A new SurveyUSA poll shows Romney with 58% of the vote, with Ron Paul in a distant second at 14%, which means that the May 15th primary will be as drama-free as possible. In his Eugene office Wednesday, Defazio accused the President of lacking the will to fight for the promises he made to get elected. “Fight? Rep. Hooley should brace for a tough race Both Sen. Jackie Winters and Jim Zupacncic are formidable foes. April 17, 2004 Voters in the 5th Congressional District can choose between the strongest Republican candidates in years. Either state Sen. Jackie Winters of Salem or lawyer Jim Zupancic of Lake Oswego would be a formidable opponent to Democratic Rep. Darlene Hooley. Winters’ and Zupancic’s views are alike in many ways. Both support President Bush’s tax cut, his No Child Left Behind act and his approach to thinning public forests. Each vows to cut government waste and paints the other as more...

From the desk of Perry A. Atkinson Oregon Republican Party Chairman 1999-2003 Monday, April 12, 2004 Dear Fellow Republican, It is rare that I get involved in a Republican Primary but when I learned that Senator Jackie Winters’ opponent in the Fifth Congressional District race, downtown Portland Lawyer Jim Zupancic, had contributed money to Democrat Attorney General Hardy Meyers, it bothered me deeply. This is the same Hardy Meyers that recently refused to enforce the state law banning gay marriage in Multnomah County. While I was trying to lead the Party, at a time when then candidate George W. Bush...

I've seen the senate races heating up, but not nearly as much on the house seats. I'm mostly using information from DC POLITICAL REPORT and POLITICS1. STATES Alabama DISTRICT 3 - The other Mike Rogers (R) won in 02 with 50.3% over Democrat Joe Turnham(48.2%) in an open seat. So far, it looks as he is facing Democrat Bill Fuller, Ex-State Human Resources Commissioner. I haven't heard much about this race, but the first defense is hardest. Alaska SENATE - Lisa Murkowski(R) vs Ex governor Tony Knowles. This will be a tough race as Knowles is an ex-governor and Murkowski...

Journalists, political pundits and other Hysteric Left activists are desperately trying to spin some cosmic significance out of Sunday's Spanish elections. The "conventional wisdom" is that the Spanish Election results are some sort of significant defeat for President Bush and the War on Terror. As usual the "News Media's" thinking is neither conventional nor wise. What all the various activists miss is the reality of American Exceptionalism. As much as the International Political Left hates, and try's to deny, the reality is the USA operates on a completely different political level then the rest of the world. On Sunday, the...

The reason for my apology was that throughout this primary season we have been hearing about the record turnout of voters participating in Democrat caucuses and primaries. I bought the lie. The truth is that, except for Iowa and New Hampshire, there has not been any sort of record turnout for the Democrats. Even in New Hampshire the vote was far less than what the Republicans had when they last had a contested primary in 2000. The Democrats this year had 219,787 votes in their primary. The GOP in 2000 had 239,523 votes. That 20,000 difference is major in a...
