Central Florida's largest newspaper is endorsing challenger Dan Webster over Democratic Rep. Alan Grayson in the 8th Congressional District race, calling Grayson's antics -- including misrepresenting Webster's discussion of the Bible -- an "embarrassment" for Floridians. The Orlando Sentinel editors wrote in Friday's edition that Grayson "carries the hyper-partisan fever" and Webster is the "antidote."

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Orlando police say an officer, who broke an 84-year-old man's neck, did nothing wrong. Officer Travis Lamont was cleared by the department late Friday morning. Orlando Police Chief Val Demings said Officer Lamont did not violate policy. He broke 84-year-old Daniel Daley's neck in September while arresting him. Since the department has cleared Officer Lamont's use of force, there will be no internal affairs investigation into the officer's actions. WFTV spoke with Daley's lawyer, Mark NeJame, Friday. NeJame told WFTV he is not surprised that the Orlando Police Department cleared the officer, but says it was wrong...

Man in Elmo costume is attacked and breaks man's fingers He's cute. He's cuddly. He's red all over. And he throws a mean right hook. Introducing Florida's version of Elmo. A man wearing the Sesame Street character's costume for a promotional event pummeled a guy in Orlando after he was attacked in a guitar shop over the weekend. The costumed fighter's name hasn't been released, but he left a pretty good impression on his attacker, who told police he felt threatened by the Elmo costume. Police believe the attack was unprovoked and the attacker might have mental issues. That guy...

Did Far-Left Dem Congressman Alan Grayson Scam The City Of Orlando? (FR exclusive) Citizens of Central Florida are accustomed to being scammed by far-left Congressman Alan Grayson. Grayson recently spent $73,000 of federal taxpayers’ money on a re-election DVD. The DVD was supposedly an “informational” recording, but everyone who held their nose and watched it saw that it was clearly a “re-elect me” piece from Florida’s most infamous Congressman….. paid for by us. Grayson is well known and reviled throughout the country for announcing on the House floor that Republicans wanted old people to die to reduce health care costs....

For the first time in more than a decade, the median price of a home in Orlando has dropped to less than $100,000... Sales prices were down 22 percent from a year earlier. The last time existing houses were so cheap in Orlando was May 1998, when a mid-range home cost $98,984. In comparison, it was just three years ago when median prices peaked at $264,436... more than 70 percent of August sales were distress properties. " With foreclosures and short sales dominating the market, the median price continues to be lowered," said Kathleen Gallagher McIver, Re/Max Town & Country...
  • Some can't afford the cost of being homeless in Orlando

If being homeless had an upside, you might suppose that at least it's free. Except it's not — not if you want to stay at most Central Florida shelters. For years, the region's shelters have charged small fees to those who spend the night — in part to offset their own costs, in part to encourage people to get a job and move on. But in the worst economy in decades, even the homeless are getting poorer, with many struggling to come up with as little as $2 to $10 a night. "How can you charge someone who doesn't have...

ORANGE CO., Fla. -- Both the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and Orlando police are investigating a traffic stop involving a UCF professor who accused officers of discriminating against her. The same professor has made public statements in the past about racial profiling. While there was no comment from the police department itself, the university is calling this an "urgent matter." Dr. Jennifer Vest is a multi-racial, distinguished philosophy professor at the University Of Central Florida. She writes poetry about discrimination and she's an activist for gay rights. "Everywhere I go there's somebody who's got a problem with me racially,...

Dengue fever has infected a handful of people in Central Florida, health officials said. “This is not a regular flu virus that you get, you feel a lot worse,” said Dr. Todd Husty. “You get a real great fever, a horrible fever; it's called ‘break bone fever.’ You feel like your bones are breaking, but it's really joint pain,” Husty said. Health officials said more than a dozen people have picked up the virus from Mosquitoes in the Keys. More than 30 more across the state of Florida have the fever after picking it up out of the country.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- A fight over the “Tea Party” name is getting ugly in Orlando. Late Thursday morning, a news conference by one group turned into a shouting match and police had to be called out. At the Supervisor of Elections Office Thursday, there was some pushing, shoving and name-calling. It happened between two groups that both claim to be part of the Tea Party. Members of the Tea Party Movement insist their name was hijacked by political consultant Doug Guetzloe and local attorney Fred O'Neal, who registered a third party called the Florida Tea Party. But Guetzloe, O'Neal and...

ORLANDO -- Is it too soon to name a road after President Barack Obama? A new road being built through Orlando will have his name. Roads in Orlando honor some of our greatest presidents, from Washington to Jefferson and now Obama. On Friday, Orlando leaders made President Barack Obama Parkway the first road under construction in the nation named after our 44th President, and surely one of the few in history to be named after a sitting president in his first term. "I think it’s great if people want to support their presidential candidate, but I think it's a little...

No heart. I’m not sure you can find a pulsation right now among Orlando’s trio of Dwight Howard, Vince Carter and Rashard Lewis. With their backs against the proverbial wall, all three came out and laid a gigantic egg. That’s $50 million that should have just stayed home and watched the Eastern Conference finals on television — because they were all bystanders on Saturday night in Boston’s 94-71 thrashing in Game 3. Howard went through the first 11:51 without scoring as the Celtics took a 27-12 lead after the first quarter. The NBA’s most dominant big man finished with a...

ORLANDO, Fla.- A Florida shopping mall had an unexpected, and unwelcome, visitor Wednesday when a 10-foot alligator took up residence on a nearby sidewalk, authorities said. Trappers were called to the Millenia Mall in Orlando, Fla., early in the morning to capture and remove the animal, WESH-TV, Orlando, reported. They said more of the reptiles are seen at this time of year when the alligators' mating season begins. "Most of the time when you have a big single alligator, it's usually a male adult searching for a girlfriend," gator trapper Terry Parlier said.
