The arraignment of 14-year-old Brandon McInerney, accused of shooting an Oxnard schoolmate in the head, was postponed again Thursday and rescheduled for June. Ventura County Superior Court Judge Kevin McGee granted the delay requested by McInerney's lawyer William "Willy" Quest. Earlier, Quest said in an interview that he is working on a legal motion attacking the constitutionality of trying his client as an adult. The attorney said it will be a "very in-depth" legal issue pertaining to serious constitutional matters. Quest wants time to prepare and submit his legal motion before his client is arraigned McInerney made a brief court...

Ventura County prosecutors should not try a 14-year-old Oxnard boy as an adult in the killing of a 15-year-old classmate in Oxnard. Tuesday's shooting at E.O. Green Junior High, which resulted in the death of eighth-grader Lawrence King, is a tragedy. But, as a community, we cannot let our sense of outrage, hurt and desire for justice blind us to the fact that the suspected shooter turned 14 a mere three weeks ago. The boy's attorney, Brian Vogel, stated that if the shooting had occurred before his client's Jan. 24 birthday, he could not be tried as an adult. "My...

State and federal regulators this week will kick off a long process to consider another proposal for a liquefied natural gas terminal off the Ventura County coast. Officials will take suggestions from the public on what to include in an environmental study for the Clearwater Port project during a hearing Wednesday at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center. Houston-based NorthernStar Natural Gas wants to convert an oil platform 12.6 miles off the coast of Oxnard to accept liquid natural gas from various companies, convert it to vapor and send it ashore via an undersea, 36-inch-diameter pipeline. It is the second such...

Michael Tenenbaum says most people he meets while campaigning in local communities don't know who their congressman is. "It's not your fault you don't know," Tenenbaum tells them. "If he'd done something you'd know him." Tenenbaum, 37, is speaking of his June 6 primary election opponent, Elton Gallegly of Simi Valley, the 20-year congressman for the 24th District, which covers parts of Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, including Thousand Oaks. Voters will choose one of the two Republicans for the November election ballot. What many people do know about Gallegly, 62, adds Tenenbaum, is that Gallegly unexpectedly announced his retirement...

WASCO, Calif. (AP) - Ash used to treat wastewater sludge was found to be hazardous and immediately must be removed from Kern County, state officials said Friday. The city of Oxnard, which owns the farmland outside of Wasco where the corrosive ash was being stored, agreed to begin moving the massive piles from the site last year at the request of Kern County officials. The material, a byproduct of an oil refinery called BP West Coast Products LLC in the Los Angeles area, is used to destroy pathogens in human and industrial waste, said Mark Norris, Oxnard's wastewater superintendent. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger wants California to have a liquefied natural gas terminal and he prefers it be off the coast of Oxnard. Energy companies have submitted four separate proposals for LNG terminals on or off the California coast. Although the state is studying all of them, Schwarzenegger said after a speech in Alhambra on Thursday, "my personal preference is Oxnard." A proposal to build a floating terminal off the Oxnard coast has been submitted by the Australian energy firm BHP Billiton. The Coast Guard is conducting an environmental review, with safety one of the major issues being studied since an...
