The incidents occurred sometime during the night of Dec. 5 as the massive Thomas Fire raged through Ventura County. Oxnard police said two black Suburbans parked in the 3700 block Dunkfirk Drive were broken into and personal belongings were stolen. The victims, a family who drove to the location, spent the night with friends when jewelry, a guitar, clothing, electronics and personal papers were stolen from their vehicles. About $75,000 worth of property was taken, Oxnard police estimated. About $10,000 in charges were made on a credit card, leading police to the suspects, authorities said.

The man wearing all black is initially seen in the security footage from June 18 blending in like any other shopper. But, authorities say, he didn’t come to the store to shop, but to build a chemical weapon. “This is a very bizarre case,” said Eric Sonstegard, the Oxnard Assistant Police Chief. Detectives identified the suspect as Martin Reyes. They say he went to the store after conducting research online on how to build a deadly chemical weapon. Once inside the store, police said the man assembled all of the ingredients from store shelves, which included some kind of electronic...

Comments posted by a Ventura County Democratic Party official on his Twitter account last week in which he wrote that some east county Republicans who testified at a hearing in Oxnard should "just put your white hoods on already" do not represent the views of the county party, Chairman Richard Carter said Wednesday. Carter said he has spoken with David Atkins, the county Democratic Party's vice chairman, about that and other Twitter posts last week, and believes Atkins "now regrets those comments." That acknowledgment, Carter said, is good enough for him, and he does not anticipate the county party taking...

A team of investigators with the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office converged on Oxnard’s City Hall on Friday afternoon, locking down the building for several hours while they served a search warrant. Late Friday the DA’s chief investigator, Rob Briner, came out of City Hall briefly and confirmed his office was conducting an investigation of the city of Oxnard in conjunction with the FBI. Briner offered no further information on the investigation. Much of the city’s top management remained in the building throughout the afternoon and early evening, and “temporarily closed” signs were taped to front doors while deputies in...

Thomas Aquinas College is not your typical modern university. Students read the classics, not textbooks. Girls must wear skirts or dresses to class. There’s a curfew of 11 on school nights. Yet the conservative Catholic college, nestled in the hills of Santa Paula, is attracting national attention for its small classes, generous financial aid and strong academics. U.S. News & World Report this month ranked it among the nation’s top 100 liberal arts colleges.... Above all, Thomas Aquinas is known for its Great Books program. Instead of using textbooks, students learn every subject — from literature to science — by...

The arraignment of 14-year-old Brandon McInerney, accused of shooting an Oxnard schoolmate in the head, was postponed again Thursday and rescheduled for June. Ventura County Superior Court Judge Kevin McGee granted the delay requested by McInerney's lawyer William "Willy" Quest. Earlier, Quest said in an interview that he is working on a legal motion attacking the constitutionality of trying his client as an adult. The attorney said it will be a "very in-depth" legal issue pertaining to serious constitutional matters. Quest wants time to prepare and submit his legal motion before his client is arraigned McInerney made a brief court...

Ventura County prosecutors should not try a 14-year-old Oxnard boy as an adult in the killing of a 15-year-old classmate in Oxnard. Tuesday's shooting at E.O. Green Junior High, which resulted in the death of eighth-grader Lawrence King, is a tragedy. But, as a community, we cannot let our sense of outrage, hurt and desire for justice blind us to the fact that the suspected shooter turned 14 a mere three weeks ago. The boy's attorney, Brian Vogel, stated that if the shooting had occurred before his client's Jan. 24 birthday, he could not be tried as an adult. "My...

State and federal regulators this week will kick off a long process to consider another proposal for a liquefied natural gas terminal off the Ventura County coast. Officials will take suggestions from the public on what to include in an environmental study for the Clearwater Port project during a hearing Wednesday at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center. Houston-based NorthernStar Natural Gas wants to convert an oil platform 12.6 miles off the coast of Oxnard to accept liquid natural gas from various companies, convert it to vapor and send it ashore via an undersea, 36-inch-diameter pipeline. Michael Tenenbaum says most people he meets while campaigning in local communities don't know who their congressman is. "It's not your fault you don't know," Tenenbaum tells them. "If he'd done something you'd know him." Tenenbaum, 37, is speaking of his June 6 primary election opponent, Elton Gallegly of Simi Valley, the 20-year congressman for the 24th District, which covers parts of Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, including Thousand Oaks. Voters will choose one of the two Republicans for the November election ballot. What many people do know about Gallegly, 62, adds Tenenbaum, is that Gallegly unexpectedly announced his retirement...

WASCO, Calif. (AP) - Ash used to treat wastewater sludge was found to be hazardous and immediately must be removed from Kern County, state officials said Friday. The city of Oxnard, which owns the farmland outside of Wasco where the corrosive ash was being stored, agreed to begin moving the massive piles from the site last year at the request of Kern County officials. The material, a byproduct of an oil refinery called BP West Coast Products LLC in the Los Angeles area, is used to destroy pathogens in human and industrial waste, said Mark Norris, Oxnard's wastewater superintendent.
