An inmate who fought with jail guards about a plate of undercooked pancakes has drawn a term of more than five years in prison. The incident took place four months before he would have been released from the Calhoun County jail on a previous offense. The pancake incident resulted in three new charges being filed. Talris Terrell “Sweet Tea” Brown, 43, eventually entered a no contest plea to the new charges of aggravated assault, resisting an officer with violence, and the introduction of contraband into the Calhoun County jail. The contraband charge was leveled because Brown armed himself with a...

It’s hard to believe that a fight this bad could erupt when the only thing she asked for was some maple syrup for her pancakes. A mass brawl ensued when one girl asked another table if they could have some syrup, and got the response: ‘B***h, your pancakes look fine to me’. The fight started in a Denny's restaurant in Chicopee, Massachusetts, when one group of girls did not have enough maple syrup. More than two-thirds of New York City's public school students will begin getting more nutritious free or low-cost school lunches under First Lady Michelle Obama's pet project to get kids to eat well and exercise. President Obama signed into law Sunday the $4.5 billion Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, which expands the free lunch program and requires that schools provide more nutritious lunches. "We've seen the connection between what kids eat and how well they perform in school," he said. Some 680,000 out of 1.1 million New York children participate in the school lunch program - a big chunk of the...

For anyone who's been showing off their smiley-face or heart-shaped pancakes, it's time to step up your game because jimspancakes.com has set the bar mighty high. "Just trying to make some cool pancakes for my daughter" is the tagline of his site, which chronicles the special breakfasts he makes for his extremely cute 3-year-old. How has Jim changed the game? First of all, he uses colored pancake batter. Second, as the art director of his own small ad agency he knows how to draw. Third, he works in three dimensions. First Lady Michelle Obama brought renewed energy to the NAACP today, delivering the keynote speech at the annual convention one day before the nation's largest civil rights group is expected to condemn what it calls racist elements in the Tea Party movement. The nation's largest and oldest civil rights organization will vote on the resolution Tuesday during its annual convention in Kansas City, Mo. In addition to jobs and the economy, anti-Tea Party activism has been a large focus of the gathering, which conservative leaders say is driven solely by a political agenda. The resolution is part of the movement...

Saturday a week ago I had a $5,000 blueberry pancake. Actually, I had two of them. They were just as delicious as the ones I had last fall. All of them were courtesy of the Scaly Mountain Women’s Club. Scaly Mountain is an unincorporated community just down the Dillard Road from us, about ten miles from the intersection of the North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia borders. In the summer, Scaly Mountain swells to several thousand people. In the winter, it shrinks to a few hundred. But, there is never a shortage of fine people who willingly give their time,...

Palestinians in the West Bank city of Ramallah on Tuesday named a street after activist Rachel Corrie, who was crushed to death by an Israeli army bulldozer in a 2003 protest against house demolitions in Gaza. The dedication ceremony was held on the seventh anniversary of Corrie's death. Corrie's mother, Cindy, said her daughter stood for many other foreign activists who have come to the West Bank and Gaza in recent years to serve as a buffer between Palestinians and Israeli troops.

A news release from the Corrie family after yesterday's court session in Haifa notes testimony that Rachel Corrie "arrived dead at the hospital." If she was already dead, why were doctors at An Najah Hospital "treating" her ? [Photos of Corrie at An Najar are posted on the blog] As I have reported before, ISM Media Coordinator in 2003, Michael Shaik stated definitively both to me and in other media:" An ambulance rushed her to A-Najar hospital where she died." So--let's get this straight. Your daughter repeatedly kneels in front of an Israeli military bulldozer on a demolition mission; she...

When Reuters Miscaptioned a Photo, They Changed an Accidental Death into a Murder A news story which shocked the world this week dealt with the crushing of American citizen Rachel Corrie by an IDF bulldozer, who ostensibly blocked with her body a bulldozer about to demolish the home of a Palestinian terrorist in Gaza, made huge headlines all over the world. I asked to speak with the spokesman of International Solidarity Movement Mike Shaik, who passed me on to Lynn Clausen, a 24-year old resident of Washington from the Christians Peacemakers Team based in Hebron, which trains the ISM volunteers....

Fresh off a big-buck fundraiser in Minneapolis, Democrat Barack Obama dropped in on a humble St. Paul pancake house Thursday to chat with diners about their concerns. The presidential contender spent more than 40 minutes making his way from table to table at the Copper Dome Restaurant, shaking hands and even picking up a baby as photographers, videographers and reporters crammed between diners to follow his every move. "This seems like a pretty good spot. This is where the happening people meet," Obama said shortly after walking into the restaurant, a neighborhood fixture. Word of Obama's visit spread quickly and...

A Brief History of Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day) For centuries, the English have celebratd Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent, with merriment and antics and, especially, great quantities of pancakes. In fact, the fried flat cakes became so important to the holiday that is has also been called Pancake Day, or Pancake Tuesday.Long ago, strict Christian Lenten rules prohibited the eating of all dairy products, so keen housewives made pancakes to use up their supplies of eggs, milk, butter and other fats. They could be easily made and cooked in a skillet or on a griddle. Families ate stacks...

A member of the Spanish Battalion in the UN peace-keeping force testifies about the Croat-Muslim conflict in Mostar at the trial of former Bosnian Croat leaders. One of the questions for him was: is a hospital surrounded by enemy mortar positions a legitimate target? At the trial of former Herceg Bosna leaders, the prosecution called yet another member of the Spanish Battalion, who testified under a pseudonym and with image distortion about the Croat-Muslim conflict in Mostar. In the examination-in-chief, he confirmed a number of reports filed by the Spanish Battalion about the shelling, sniping and humanitarian situation in East Mostar....

Shrove Tuesday is the term used in United Kingdom,, Ireland, and Australia to refer to the day after Collop Monday and before Ash Wednesday (the liturgical season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday). In these countries, this day is also known as Pancake Day, because it is customary to eat pancakes on this day. The reason that pancakes are associated with the day preceding Lent is that it was the start of the traditional 40 days of Lent liturgical fasting, during which only the plainest foodstuffs were eaten. Therefore, rich ingredients such as eggs, milk, sugar and flour are disposed...

So the Quincy IHOP drivers-license pancake-bandit fiasco is now over. Tonight, after last call, you can weave your way down the Burgin Parkway right by the Star Market. You can stagger into the IHOP and order (although your physician would certainly advise against it) a Rooty Tooty Fresh Fruity without having to fork over your ID to a mall-cop wannabe lurking menacingly at the front door. The IHOP buttermilk-burglar manhunt is off, ocean-frank, finito. IHOP corporate management has apologized to all concerned, although they are no doubt relieved they don’t have a Denny’s situation on their hands. At the Quincy...

You would think that by the age of 64, most women would be self-conscious enough to ensure their choice of evening wear does not expose parts of the body which have...well dropped below standards. But no one seems to have shared this with legendary entertainer Barbra Streisand as she stepped out in this rather unflattering black dress at the Clinton Global Initiative in New York. Streisand seemed to forget what a photographer's flash can do to a black dress as she unwittingly revealed she had left the black bra tucked up in her drawer at home. But this was not...
