Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine refused to begin the finger-pointing on "who lost the House," but it is likely to become a full-fledged fight between the White House and Capitol Hill Democrats once the full extent of Tuesday's losses are known. (snip) Kaine, the former Virginia governor, also lamented the loss of at least three House seats in the "Old Dominion" to Republicans, saying he felt the defeats of Reps. Rick Boucher, Glenn Nye and Tom Perriello "personally."

Via J.P. Freire at the Examiner, a supporter of Democrat congressional candidate Tom Perriello and Barack Obama demonstrates a little, ahem, “insane rage” that won’t be spotlighted on the nightly news or decried on the NYTimes op-ed page. Maybe he’ll get a guest hosting spot on The View or an honorary membership to the New Black Panther Party… Especially love how he screams “You f**king House nigger white-black bitch!” at a black GOP woman and then turns around and screams “RAAAAACIST!” at her and the rest of the peaceful conservative activists peacefully sitting together in their yard.See also: Unhinged.Strap in...

I bring this particular video up for a reason — and not because of the “gotcha effect” but for two serious questions: (1) Here we go again with “racism as a political weapon” again — doesn’t the attack (or at best, baseless claim) in these instances cheapen what is still a very real problem? (2) If it was a Republican or Tea Party volunteer doing something similar in downtown Charlottesville that afternoon, would this have been headline news?

Obama flew to central Virginia for a rally on behalf of Tom Perriello, a first-term Democratic congressman who is in a tough re-election fight, two years after winning his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives by just 727 votes. Tom Perriello, the congressman for Virginia's fifth district, spoke to a monthly meeting of our local Charlottesville group, the Jefferson Area Tea Party. I almost had to give Perriello credit for courage, for having the guts to venture into the lion's den while other Democratic congressmen are scrambling to evade their constituents. Almost. After facing criticism that he was stifling free speech, U.S. Rep. Tom Perriello will now allow political signs at his 10 remaining town hall meetings across the district. Perriello’s office had banned signs at his 20 scheduled town hall forums during Congress’ recess after a number of constituents told them that the abundance of signs at last year’s town hall forums contributed to an overly charged and politicized atmosphere. The Rutherford Institute, an Albemarle County-based civil liberties organization, chastised the freshman Democrat over the sign ban policy Wednesday. “Your sign ban amounts to an act of outright censorship that raises...

Not a typo. I've been harping on my 1994-is-roughly-the-median-result for Republicans this cycle theme for most of the year. The latest SurveyUSA poll of Virginia's Fifth Congressional is more than consistent with this theory. SurveyUSA shows Republican Rob Hurt leading Freshman Democrat Tom Perriello by an astonishing 58%-35% margin. Now, Perriello was something of a surprise winner in 2008, and it was assumed that he'd have a tough race. But his district is "only" R+5, Obama almost carried it, and it is much more heavily Democratic at the local level. There are 41 Democrats in districts with more Republican PVIs....

An unusual number of Democratic candidates running this cycle are basing their victory scenarios on the existence of Independent or third-party candidates in their races. Are their hopes reasonable or are they merely grasping at straws? Certainly there are examples of third-party candidates who had no chance of winning siphoning off enough votes from one major-party nominee to alter the outcome of an election. Last cycle, in Ohio’s 15th district, anti-abortion conservative Don Eckhart drew almost 13,000 votes, the majority of which might well have gone to GOP nominee Steve Stivers. That almost certainly cost the Republican the election, as...

Virginia’s fifth district was home to one of the hottest Congressional races of the year last cycle, and this year promises to be another scorcher. The only differences is that instead of being on the attack, incumbent Democrat Tom Perriello is going to have to defend his seat, including the controversial votes he’s taken in the past year. Perriello won by a .2% margin in 2008. That’s about 700 votes out of 315,000 cast, enough to where the Federal Election Commission could sneeze on a stack of ballots and blow a few out the window. That sort of margin would...

Vice President Joe Biden did not need Air Force Two Thursday night to travel across the Potomac River to McLean, Va., to the home of former Democratic Virginia Gov. and Sen. Chuck Robb. It was, of course, a fundraiser, designed to help finance three freshman Democratic House candidates -- Glenn Nye, Gerry Connolly and Tom Perriello -- in their challenging reelection races 13 months from now in what once was a predictably GOP state. Robb himself did not speak at the event. His wife, Lynda, daughter of President Lyndon B. Johnson, introduced the trio of representatives. But it looks like...

Freshmen Dems torn by party, voters on health careBackbencher Democrats thrown into the front lines of the debate are caught in a crossfire BOB LEWIS and MIKE BAKER Associated Press Writers Wednesday, August 19, 2009 FORK UNION, Va. — By his ninth town hall meeting this week — in a sweltering Virginia middle school auditorium — freshman Rep. Tom Perriello is no longer fazed by angry crowds mobilized for and against health care reform. He and other backbencher Democrats thrown into the front lines of the debate are caught in a crossfire between their congressional leaders to the left and...

Former Rep. Virgil Goode (R-Va.) opened up a sweepstakes in his old district when he said last month that he wouldn’t run in 2010, and state Sen. Robert Hurt has emerged from the clutter as the odds-on frontrunner. Hurt has yet to make his intentions known, but those close to him say he is seriously looking at the race and is leaning toward entering it. Freshman Rep. Tom Perriello (D-Va.) has gained plenty of attention – some of it unwanted – during the August recess for the tightrope he is walking in a conservative district on issues like health care...

In a small middle school library a man is shouting and wagging a finger at Rep. Tom Perriello. Perriello, a Democrat who represents Virginia's mostly rural 5th District extending from Charlottesville to the North Carolina border, has just embarked on his monthlong listening tour, and residents are unloading their anger about the Democratic agenda. They're mad about government spending, legislation aimed a curbing global warming and, most of all, plans to create a massive public health care system that would cover all of the nation's uninsured. "So you're going to steal my money," shouted the middle-aged man as he...

Dear xxxxx, This August is the make-or-break month for health care reform. Can you come to an event with Rep. Tom Perriello in Ruckersville tomorrow? Right-wing extremists are crashing tons of events—so it's up to us to make sure the majority of folks who want reform get heard. We need to make sure Rep. Tom Perriello knows that constituents are counting on him to support health care reform with a real public health insurance option that will expand coverage and bring down costs for all of us. We have numbers on our side, but Rep. Perriello won't know it unless...

Thank you Tom Perriello By John Barnhart Thank you Tom Perriello — for stabbing the working people of the 5th District in the back. On June 29, 41 House Democrats had the courage to stand up to Supreme Leader Nancy Pelosi. They voted against her cap-and-trade energy bill. Congressman Perriello was not one of them. He voted for this nightmare, which narrowly passed the House of Representatives by seven votes.

The Jefferson Area Tea Party is rallying against Fifth District Congressman Tom Perriello. Thursday afternoon, the group held a protest at Perriello's office on Second Street in Charlottesville. They are upset with Perriello's support of the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009. The group says the bill, which still being debated by the Senate, is an energy tax. Those people who support the initiative say it reduces the amount of carbon that electric utilities, oil refiners, and certain industries can emit. Perriello voted for the so-called "cap and trade bill", which passed the House 219 to 212.
