The monks at Mepkin Abbey have supported their contemplative lives for 40 years largely by supplying eggs to local grocery stores. No more. The abbey has succumbed to a campaign undertaken last year by the animal-rights activist group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Too bad. In announcing its decision to phase out its operation over the next year and a half, a Mepkin spokesman said PETA's campaign had become a distraction to the Trappist community: "While the monks are sad to give up work that has sustained them for many years, a hard and honorable work of which...

The Michael Vick dogfighting scandal is morphing into a broader NFL dogfighting scandal, as other NFL players also appear to be involved in this very weird pastime. But as animal-rights groups get more aggressive in their accusations and demands, the whole scene is getting stranger. And the closer you look, the more you see the deep conflicts in core values that fracture our society. among PETA's prohibitions, is the use of animal skins. The ball, as in football, is an inflated leather object endearingly called the "pigskin." Why does PETA oppose existing NFL conduct policy, and not football itself? J.C....

1) PETA president and co-founder Ingrid Newkirk has described her group’s overall goal as “total animal liberation.” This means no meat, no milk, no zoos, no circuses, no wool, no leather, no hunting, no fishing, and no pets (not even seeing-eye dogs). PETA is also against all medical research that requires the use of animals. 2) Despite its constant moralizing about the “unethical” treatment of animals by restaurant owners, grocers, farmers, scientists, anglers, and countless other Americans, PETA has killed over 10,000 dogs and cats at its Norfolk, Virginia headquarters. During 2003, PETA put to death over 85 percent of...

The animal-loving PETA folks are setting their sights on Mayor Thomas M. Menino's fluctuating waistline, inviting him to see how much weight he can lose by chowing down strictly on vegetarian food. "He's a good mayor and a good man, but he could stand to lose some weight and set a good example for the people of Boston,'' said Joe Haptas, special projects head of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. The militant animal rights group says as part of its GoVeg.com Lifestyle Challenge, it's prepared to buy two vegeterian meals a day for the mayor to mangia. For...

Our newest website, PetaKillsAnimals.com (as well as the Times Square billboard announcing it), has apparently caused a stir in the ranks of animal rights activists. Over 500,000 people have visited the site since its launch five weeks ago -- among them some die-hard PETA supporters. At least they were PETA supporters. PETA's own members-only message board in Louisville, Kentucky has been abuzz lately with a discussion of our disturbing findings. One activist writes: My Grand Son brought this site to my attention, if what they put forth is true it is very disturbing 5 animals a day killed at PETA...
