  • Silly British MPs Set to Debate Trumped Up, Make-Believe Donald Trump Petition

Meanwhile, is it only British MPs who would carry on with a debate over a full-blown Tempest in a Teapot? Things are so jolly for the masses in England that their MPs are taking time to debate a government-sponsored petition calling for American presidential hopeful Donald Trump to be excluded from the UK. MPs will discuss the call for the Tempest-in-Teapot Trump ban in the usually more august Westminster Hall come January 18. British politicians whose sensibilities have been highly offended all because Trump noted ‘Britain’s Muslim problems’, are somewhat akin to the sheriffs in old Western movies, who ordered...

Warning - A petition worker came by yesterday to ask for our signatures and knew everyone's name in the household. We declined to sign. Later, Mr. b overheard one of the workers asking the other what happens if no one signs the petition. The guy told him that they write in the signatures themselves. Mr. b reported it to the elections office and to someone else in the courthouse. We'll wait until the petition is turned and to see if our names are on it and then report it to the county attorney. The Obama administration on Friday responded to the wave of secession petitions that spread online following the November election, preaching unity over division and saying theres no right to secede. In a nation of 300 million people each with their own set of deeply-held beliefs democracy can be noisy and controversial. And thats a good thing. Free and open debate is what makes this country work, and many people around the world risk their lives every day for the liberties we often take for granted, wrote Jon Carson, director of the Office of Public Engagement. ANNAPOLIS Organizers of a petition against Marylands same-sex marriage law have collected enough valid voter signatures to send the law to a November referendum, state election officials said Thursday. The state Board of Elections announced that local elections boards have verified 70,039 signatures on the petition to force a statewide vote on the law exceeding the 55,736 signatures that were required to be turned in by June 30. The Maryland Marriage Alliance has led the petition effort against the law, which was passed in February by the General Assembly. The group says it submitted more than 122,000 signatures...

MADISON A little advice for those who want to pop in and observe the recall petition review: Stay home and watch it on television. Only staff members and temporary employees of the Government Accountability Board, or GAB, which oversees state elections and campaigns, will be permitted in an at-present undisclosed location. And speaking of temp jobs, the board has had a hard time filling the petition review positions, mainly because too many prospective employment candidates have signed recall petitions targeting Gov. The decision, announced Thursday, comes after a ruling last week by Waukesha County Circuit Judge J. DES MOINES Virginias attorney general said on Saturday that he will propose emergency legislation to change the states ballot access laws in ways that would make it easier for candidates to qualify. The legislation would allow any presidential candidate to appear on the ballot for the states March 6 primary if they meet the requirements to qualify for federal matching funds. That would likely allow Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry to participate in the primary after both failed to gather the required signatures under Virginias current standards. Californias initiative process has long been a thorn in the side of the states labor unions and their allies in the Democrat Party. While they have occasionally utilized ballot measure to coax more money out of taxpayers, overall progressives have viewed ballot initiatives as the one aspect of the states government that they cannot fully control. Their stranglehold on the legislature and deep pockets for election spending ensure their domination as Californias most powerful political influencer. SACRAMENTO (AP) - Secretary of State Bruce McPherson on Monday proposed changing the state's election process so state officials and initiative sponsors would have more time to review petitions before seeking voter signatures. The change is designed to prevent problems that arose earlier this year when proponents of Proposition 77 discovered they had used two different versions - the one they circulated to voters differed in 17 places from the one they had submitted to the attorney general for review. The disclosure prompted a court fight that ended Friday when the state Supreme Court allowed the measure on the Nov....

WALNUT CREEK - Four women, including a schoolteacher from Concord, have asked the state to investigate allegations of illegal and abusive behavior by signature-gatherers hired to work on Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's initiatives. Erica Rodriguez filed a complaint Thursday afternoon with the secretary of state's office that includes testimony from the women and transcripts of secretly recorded conversations between herself and several petition-gatherers. A laundry list of allegations includes misrepresentations about the petitions' contents and impacts, and illegally allowing felons to register citizens to vote. It also details alleged intimidation tactics used to scare off detractors such as swearing, physical crowding...

There's no question Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's campaign on behalf of his government reform proposals has cost him popularity and political capital. But with initiative petitions being turned in and new campaign commercials beginning to air statewide, the ever-optimistic governor may have turned a corner in the fierce battle to place his reform agenda before voters. Despite weeks of televised attacks by nurses, teachers and other Democrat-leaning interest groups, Schwarzenegger appears to have gathered enough signatures to force a special election on three initiatives aimed at changing the way government does business. None of the three changing the way legislative...

SAN DIEGO Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was in San Diego Thursday to promote his proposed ballot measures to change the state budgeting practices, pension system, teacher pay and legislative redistricting. Schwarzenegger has proposed reforming California's budget system, changing teacher pay to award merit rather than tenure, revising the way political districts are drawn and revamping the state's pension system. HARRISBURG -- At 4:50 p.m. yesterday, two young volunteers for Ralph Nader's presidential campaign ran into the state elections department lugging several boxes of petitions with about 50,000 signatures aimed at getting Nader on the Pennsylvania presidential ballot in November. Justin McVay, Nader's Western Pennsylvania coordinator, and Dan Martino, his counterpart for Eastern Pennsylvania, had driven from opposite ends of the state to make it to Harrisburg, just barely beating the 5 p.m. deadline for filing their candidate's petitions. State Democrats yesterday vowed to challenge Nader's petitions and will seek to keep him off the November ballot, fearing Nader will...
