AZ Gov Jan Obrewer jammed through this unfunded expansion of Medicaid by a parliamentary trick with the help of the Rats and some turncoat Republicans. This is an important issue that will cost the taxpayers $billions. Arizona state law allows citizens to petition to put a law on the ballot for an up or down vote. The Obama administration on Friday responded to the wave of secession petitions that spread online following the November election, preaching unity over division and saying there’s no right to secede. “In a nation of 300 million people — each with their own set of deeply-held beliefs — democracy can be noisy and controversial. And that’s a good thing. Free and open debate is what makes this country work, and many people around the world risk their lives every day for the liberties we often take for granted,” wrote Jon Carson, director of the Office of Public Engagement. “But as much...

ANNAPOLIS — Organizers of a petition against Maryland’s same-sex marriage law have collected enough valid voter signatures to send the law to a November referendum, state election officials said Thursday. The state Board of Elections announced that local elections boards have verified 70,039 signatures on the petition to force a statewide vote on the law — exceeding the 55,736 signatures that were required to be turned in by June 30. The Maryland Marriage Alliance has led the petition effort against the law, which was passed in February by the General Assembly. The group says it submitted more than 122,000 signatures...

MADISON — A little advice for those who want to pop in and observe the recall petition review: Stay home and watch it on television. Only staff members and temporary employees of the Government Accountability Board, or GAB, which oversees state elections and campaigns, will be permitted in an at-present undisclosed location. And speaking of temp jobs, the board has had a hard time filling the petition review positions, mainly because too many prospective employment candidates have signed recall petitions targeting Gov. Scott Walker and Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch. GAB employees Thursday continued scanning some 1.9 million signatures, after having...

Madison - State elections officials plan to enter the names of all those who sign recall petitions into a new database - a policy that will add to taxpayer costs and delay until summer when any recall elections would be held. The decision, announced Thursday, comes after a ruling last week by Waukesha County Circuit Judge J. Mac Davis that said the state Government Accountability Board must take steps to search for duplicate names and fictitious names as it reviews petitions to recall Gov. Scott Walker that are expected to be filed next week. "It is a time-consuming and very...

DES MOINES — Virginia’s attorney general said on Saturday that he will propose emergency legislation to change the state’s ballot access laws in ways that would make it easier for candidates to qualify. The legislation would allow any presidential candidate to appear on the ballot for the state’s March 6 primary if they meet the requirements to qualify for federal matching funds. That would likely allow Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry to participate in the primary after both failed to gather the required signatures under Virginia’s current standards. “Recent events have underscored that our system is deficient. Kernan, a Democrat who campaigned for Hillary Clinton during the 2008 primary, told the South Bend Tribune that he didn't sign the Obama document. "No, not at all," the former South Bend mayor said when asked whether the signature next to his name on the Obama petition looked like his own. "Nor does the printing look like mine." California’s initiative process has long been a thorn in the side of the state’s labor unions and their allies in the Democrat Party. While they have occasionally utilized ballot measure to coax more money out of taxpayers, overall progressives have viewed ballot initiatives as the one aspect of the state’s government that they cannot fully control. Their stranglehold on the legislature and deep pockets for election spending ensure their domination as California’s most powerful political influencer. For besieged conservatives and businesses, bypassing the union-controlled legislature and appealing directly to voters has been a saving grace and has slowed, if not...

WALNUT CREEK - Four women, including a schoolteacher from Concord, have asked the state to investigate allegations of illegal and abusive behavior by signature-gatherers hired to work on Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's initiatives. Erica Rodriguez filed a complaint Thursday afternoon with the secretary of state's office that includes testimony from the women and transcripts of secretly recorded conversations between herself and several petition-gatherers. A laundry list of allegations includes misrepresentations about the petitions' contents and impacts, and illegally allowing felons to register citizens to vote. It also details alleged intimidation tactics used to scare off detractors such as swearing, physical crowding...

There's no question Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's campaign on behalf of his government reform proposals has cost him popularity and political capital. But with initiative petitions being turned in and new campaign commercials beginning to air statewide, the ever-optimistic governor may have turned a corner in the fierce battle to place his reform agenda before voters. Despite weeks of televised attacks by nurses, teachers and other Democrat-leaning interest groups, Schwarzenegger appears to have gathered enough signatures to force a special election on three initiatives aimed at changing the way government does business. None of the three — changing the way legislative...

SAN DIEGO – Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was in San Diego Thursday to promote his proposed ballot measures to change the state budgeting practices, pension system, teacher pay and legislative redistricting. Schwarzenegger appeared on KOGO radio's Roger Hedgecock Show, before joining the host to gather signatures to bring his measures before voters, officials with Schwarzenegger's office said. Schwarzenegger has proposed reforming California's budget system, changing teacher pay to award merit rather than tenure, revising the way political districts are drawn and revamping the state's pension system. "What we are doing here is the private sector is paying for the public sector...

HARRISBURG -- At 4:50 p.m. yesterday, two young volunteers for Ralph Nader's presidential campaign ran into the state elections department lugging several boxes of petitions with about 50,000 signatures aimed at getting Nader on the Pennsylvania presidential ballot in November. Justin McVay, Nader's Western Pennsylvania coordinator, and Dan Martino, his counterpart for Eastern Pennsylvania, had driven from opposite ends of the state to make it to Harrisburg, just barely beating the 5 p.m. deadline for filing their candidate's petitions. State Democrats yesterday vowed to challenge Nader's petitions and will seek to keep him off the November ballot, fearing Nader will...

Texas Libertarian Party officials said they gathered enough petition signatures by Monday's deadline to earn a spot on this year's ballot, but other alternative parties said they came up short. Libertarians presented about 75,000 signatures Monday to the Secretary of State's office in Austin. Election officials must validate 45,540 signatures for the Libertarians to make the November ballot. The signatures must be from registered voters who did not vote in this year's Democratic or Republican primaries. A spokeswoman for the secretary of state said the office hopes to make the determination by early July. The two other parties that mounted...
