A Sardis, Alabama woman, Michelle Russel, was attacked by a rabid bobcat in her front yard on 13 July, 2015.  Her friend, Register, had a .22 rifle in the house, but the cartridges were in a tool shop.  From greenvilleadvocate.com: “I kept yelling, ‘There’s a bobcat out here.’ He immediately got his gun and ran to his tool shop to get bullets,” she said.   Register got the rifle loaded, but not before the cat attacked Michelle: “The cat just full-force jumped in the air and bit my arm. If I had been facing him, he would’ve probably got...

Performing an important public service. I have to admit. I’ve been caught off guard by this. I had no idea that people were keeping chickens as pets. I get raising chickens for eggs. I understand grilling their tasty meat. I was not, however, aware that people think owning a chicken is a lot like owning a cat. Apparently, I’ve been asleep at the switch. It’s a brave new world and chicken-pets are a part of it. But, if you’re thinking it would be tons of fun to see a rooster curled up in a ball at the foot of your...

A Colorado man is being hailed a good Samaritan after rescuing an abandoned German shepherd whose muzzle and legs were taped shut. On Saturday, Carl Allen and his friend were on their way to a car dealership when they noticed the pooch stranded on the road. He quickly jumped out of the car in disbelief, calling the scene “terrifying.” At first, the 8-month-old dog was so frightened he began to urinate on himself. Thankfully, a passerby came to help Allen and the two were able to remove the tape.

Nearly a kilometer below the ice scientists have found a Yellowstone-like geothermal glow that could create life-rich subglacial lakes—and lubricate Antarctic ice loss.Temperatures on the West Antarctic Ice Sheet can plummet below –50 degrees Celsius in winter. But under the ice scientists have found intense geothermal heat seeping up from Earth’s interior. The heat production that they measured is nearly four times the global average—“higher than 99 percent of all the measurements made on continents around the world,” says Andrew Fisher, a hydrogeologist at the University of California, Santa Cruz, who worked on the project. This excessive heat could melt...

The experts say the most likely explanation for certain features of the 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko comet, such as its organic-rich black crust, is the presence of living organisms beneath an icy surface. Rosetta, the European spacecraft orbiting the comet, is also said to have picked up strange "clusters" of organic material that resemble viral particles. I find desert wildlife fascinating, and I try not to kill any without good reason.   I stopped, took some pictures, and intimidated the snake off the track...

After Kyle’s death, Max returns home to the United States to live with Kyle’s grieving family. It’s a tale of healing and redemption, depicting the work of Military Working Dogs -- one of the most important roles that purebred dogs fill in our society. However, the Belgian Malinois is an alert, high-energy breed, and the qualities that...

Well it is another tumor. Little different than the last ones that were easily extracted. Based on its nature this time our vet recommended against surgery. I still have a couple things I am going to try for him. The side...

Texas is experiencing massive flooding and there's more rain on the way. Five people are dead, a dozen are missing, and 80,000 are without electricity. But at least one group will be taken care of despite this mayhem: Texas' shelter animals. Animal care facilities have, of course, been affected as well, so area shelters put out the call on social media that they needed help finding dry homes for displaced animals. Austin Animal Center made its adoptions free in order to get these pets out of the unsatisfactory conditions caused by the weather.

Three 4-month-old Kodiak brown bear cubs were dehydrated, starving, cold, wet, exhausted and unprotected when a well-known hunting guide rescued them and put them up in his own cabin. Without his help, Alaska Department of Fish and Game biologist Nate Svoboda said, the bears “probably wouldn’t have lasted another day.” On May 1, the cubs’ mother was killed by an unguided hunter, Fish and Game said. Alaska Wildlife Troopers are investigating the sow’s death. Although brown bear hunting in Kodiak is open through mid-May, it is never legal to kill a sow with cubs.

Dogs with the highest levels of intelligence are very well-suited for work as service dogs for those with...

Animal owners are responsible for their animals and the actions of their animals. Dogs are not people. It is much harder for them to understand property lines and property rights. They have to be taught, and often, restrained. When dogs run free of their owners control, their instincts tend to take over, especially if there are more than one of them. Their instinct pushes them to bark at other animals, chase them, bite them, kill them, and eat them. If there is more than one dog, pack instinct kicks in and they bounce off of one another's behavior like...

In Kansas, a dog owner deliberately let his dogs run loose and unsupervised.  At least one of the two dogs, a 90 lb, 10 month old Presa Canario, attacked a neighbor's chickens, killing some.   The neighbor called animal control, then grabbed a shotgun and went to defend his livestock.   The Presa Canario charged at him, and he shot and killed the marauding animal.   Shawnee County Sheriff press release: Upon arrival the Animal Control Officer learned that a Presa Canario breed dog attacked and killed fowl livestock and charged at the fowl livestock owner when he attempted to stop the...
  • Legalising Man-Dolphin Marriage Is Next

Why shouldn't this man be (or have been) allowed to marry his dolphin sweetheart? After all, it's only "love" that matters in holy matrimony, not building a family and a safe environment in which to raise kids. It's all to do with "feelings" these days, little else is important, and obviously we are here talking about the feelings of adults. (The feelings of children of anomalous families carry little weight.) Love in particular, however defined. For some people, like paedophile Oscar Wilde who was paying to have sex with working-class rent boys, the definition of love is lust. A...

A legally armed man stopped a string of robberies related to online ads in Georgia, by shooting and killing the robber.   It appears that at least four other robberies were committed before the robber was shot.   The old adage, if it looks to good to be true, it probably is, applies.  In a twist, the robber offered high prices for the goods, then robbed the victims of the goods at gunpoint.  It is more common for robbers who set people up online to pretend to be sellers, who then steal the cash.  Cash is much more desirable than property,...

Hi, my Buster had a serious tummy ache - gas pains - tonight that required me working on him almost three hours with gas drops and manual massage to finally get him back to normal. Not quite sure why he developed it as his eating and drinking has been good and normal lately. If you feel moved to offer up a prayer request for him I'd appreciate it. He's my little'guy that lost his left'front leg to cancer 7 month ago, and had a second tumor removal - very isolated in a node - one month ago and has been...
  • NY: Man who shot Dog found Justified, most States have Similar law

As a general rule, people have the right to protect themselves from animals that attack them. As might be expected, they have more leeway to use deadly force against animals than against other humans. Most states also allow property owners to protect their property from marauding animals, whether the animals are wild or property of another person. Damage caused by domesticated animals can be grounds for a civil suit. This situation occurred in New York.   From thedailynewsonline.com: ALEXANDER — The man who shot and killed his next-door-neighbor’s dog as it attacked him last week will not face any...

“Nobody can fully understand the meaning of love unless he’s owned a dog. He can show you more affection with one flick of his tail than a man can gather through a lifetime of handshakes.” Gene Hill, author of “The Dog Man.” >At first glance, if it were not for its decrepit, arthritis-consumed back legs, one may not immediately recognize that a handsome old dog named Mo spent most of its years living under less-than-ideal conditions – before receiving affection, happiness and hope in its final days.< >For the first time in its 14 years on earth, the mixed breed...

Here we are in front of our Christmas tree. I write the articles for my blog, Jeanie sometimes previews them and the pups (Sunshine is in front and Ruff is next to Jeanie) always chew on everything I post there and at Warsclerotic prior to publication. One member of our family, Princess, died in September and this is our first Christmas in eight years without her. We miss her very much. Nevertheless, on the whole it's been a pretty good year. Anyone have one? Can you get a decent, reliable one without spending a fortune? Likes/Dislikes? Sliding or Opening? I may need one for our property, 1) To keep dogs out of our property. 2) To keep out free range goats and chickens in our property and an occasional dog (we have 3) that may get stupid and get out of the house without a leash. Don't need anything hardcore or fancy. Not trying to keep out bad guys. Also, how did you handle UPS/FedEx/US Mail Box deliveries?
