Here we are in front of our Christmas tree. I write the articles for my blog, Jeanie sometimes previews them and the pups (Sunshine is in front and Ruff is next to Jeanie) always chew on everything I post there and at Warsclerotic prior to publication. One member of our family, Princess, died in September and this is our first Christmas in eight years without her. We miss her very much. Nevertheless, on the whole it's been a pretty good year. Anyone have one? Can you get a decent, reliable one without spending a fortune? Likes/Dislikes? Sliding or Opening? I may need one for our property, 1) To keep dogs out of our property. 2) To keep out free range goats and chickens in our property and an occasional dog (we have 3) that may get stupid and get out of the house without a leash. Don't need anything hardcore or fancy. Not trying to keep out bad guys. Also, how did you handle UPS/FedEx/US Mail Box deliveries?

I had missed this article when it came out in June of 2014.   It was particularly startling because there is no mention of the beaver having rabies.  The animal literally jumped out of the water, grabbed the kayaker by the arm, and pulled him from the boat.  From wtvr.com: “It’s just a freak thing. This beaver was upset about something and went after him,” kayaking trainer Nate Reynolds said. “I heard him yell my name, so I come running out. As soon as I came out, I see the boat flip over, so the beaver had actually jumped...

Alyssa Caldwell and her father had been hunting all day.   The weather had been nasty; cloudy skies with snow and rain alternating.   They had seen a few elk, much too far away to take a shot.   They left their makeshift blind to see if they could spot another elk before the end of the day.   It was the middle of the afternoon. At 12, Alyssa was already an experienced huntress.   She had started shooting at 5, and had a new rifle, a stainless Howa 1500, as her elk gun.  They...

I actively look for and monitor defensive uses of firarms.   While some defensive uses of firarms are common, such as driving off intruders from a home, others such as defense against a grizzly bear, are rare.  They tend to stand out when they happen.   I missed this one, even though it did get some coverage in 2013.  The actual defense occurred two years ago in November of 2012. It is especially interesting because both bear spray and bullets were used.  The only other one that I recall happened this year. The bear was killed by the gunfire, dropping, literally...

On June 3, 2013 Buffalo police raided a man’s home to look for crack cocaine. He was not there, nor was the crack. The home belonged to Iraqi war veteran, Adam Arroyo and his 2-year-old pit bull Cindy. In this famous photograph by Bruno Engler, Bella Twin is shown with the hide from the world record grizzly bear that she shot in 1953 with a single shot .22 rifle.  The question is, what rifle is she holding?   It has been written that Jack O'Conner "heard" that it was an old Stevens single shot.   But as he only "heard" this, I do not think it is at all definitive.  This is said to be from page 304 of "The Hunting Rifle", published in 1953.   Given that the bear was shot in 1953, and the reference was near the...

All handguns had to be registered in Chicago, and if the registration lapsed on handguns, you were not allowed to re-register them.   A...

Hey all, September's been a difficult month. I lost my Gus on the 6th, almost 14. Had been nursing him through since December, last few months were pretty busy taking care of him. Anyway, his roomie Dex had been of food/water and I took him in and he's anemic. They sent the blood away to determine if the anemia is due to something acute, like internal bleed/ulcer , or more chronic anemia, like kidney/liver/bone marrow kind of issue. He's also a "senior" animal so all i really ask is that we can find out what the cause is so we...

Bears in Northern Wisconsin The gun culture permeated the part of Wisconsin where I grew up.   In that area and time, we did not think of it as a separate culture.   The gun culture and the culture were one and the same.   Guns and hunting were simply integral parts of everyday life.    If a boy was not a hunter, he aspired to be one.  There was considerable game, ruffed grouse, woodcock, rabbits, squirrel, ducks,  geese, deer, mink, muskrats, raccoon, fox and ...bear.   There were not very many bear.   In my first 18 years, with nearly a decade spent wandering...

Princess was eight years old and a wonderful companion. She had been declining, reviving and again declining for the past several months, despite substantial veterinary attention. Last night she refused to eat or drink and died at about 10:30 this morning. Princess is in the middle.Princess became my favorite of all our dogs, past and present. She was attentive to my needs and concerned about me. As I became increasingly infirm with age and had difficulty descending the two steps to go from our house to my wife's separate but adjacent art studio to activate our internet connection, Princess noticed my difficulty. She accompanied me to the steps and positioned herself at my...

There isn’t any nice way to say this so here goes: A Muslim skunk who owns a Subway sandwich shop denied entry to an American disabled veteran and his service dog. This lowlife piece of garbage, who came to our country from some third world pig sty, decided that our laws covering special treatment for our disabled citizens especially our disabled veterans, mean nothing to him. This creep actually said, “I don’t care,” when a reporter asked the hateful punk if he knew about the regulation covering an exception for service animals in restaurants. This is a case of a...

Scientists have discovered the fossilized remains of a new long-necked, long-tailed dinosaur that has taken the crown for largest terrestrial animal with a body mass that can be accurately determined. Measurements of bones from its hind leg and foreleg revealed that the animal was 65 tons, and still growing when it died in the Patagonian hills of Argentina about 77 million years ago. “To put this in perspective, an African elephant is about five tons, T. rex is eight tons, Diplodocus is 18 tons, and a Boeing 737 is around 50 tons,” said study author and paleontologist Kenneth Lacovara at...

It happened in Omaha, Nebraska early on Tuesday morning.  Barb Haley was home alone, with her dog, Dozer.   Her husband was traveling for work.   She awoke to go to the restroom when Dozer ran out of the bedroom, barking.    Barb found the garage door open and drawers that appeared as if someone had rifled through them.   When she heard a crash, she retrieved her husband's pistol from the nightstand. If this is the correct timeline, it would have been better for her to retrieve the pistol when the Dozer alerted.  It is not a good idea to leave an...
