North Korea Issues Threat of Annihilation RICHARD_DUDLEY APRIL 24, 2012 06:00 For the past several days, North Korea has directed a string of increasingly hostile threats at South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and his conservative administration. As usual with the North’s public pronouncements of doom, it is often difficult to separate reality from simple bombastic rhetoric. Such is the case with this latest round of promises of mass destruction. The most recent threats from the North differ from past announcements in that they have added a specific timeline and indicate that whatever is being planned will be executed in the...

Marxist Dreams and Soviet Realities Mises Daily: Friday, April 20, 2012 by Ralph Raico The sharp contrast that Alexis de Tocqueville drew in 1835 between the United States and Tsarist Russia — "the principle of the former is freedom; of the latter, servitude"[1] — became much sharper after 1917, when the Russian Empire was transformed into the Soviet Union. Like the United States, the Soviet Union is a nation founded on a distinct ideology. In the case of America, the ideology was fundamentally Lockean liberalism; its best expressions are the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights of the...

Institutionalizing Atrocity Prevention Won’t Make Up for Obama’s Lack of Will to Act Jonathan S. Bureaucratization Mises Daily: Monday, April 23, 2012 by Ludwig von Mises [Liberalism (1927)] There is yet another sense in which it is commonly said that the necessary conditions for the realization of the liberal ideal of society no longer obtain today. In the big businesses made necessary by progress in the division of labor, the personnel employed must increase more and more. These enterprises must, therefore, in their conduct of business, become ever more like the government bureaucracy that the liberals in particular have made the target of their criticism. From day to day they become more cumbersome and less...

Van Jones, one of the most effective organizers and strategists on the left, is out with a new book. Rebuild the Dream, which debuted last week on the New York Times bestseller list, takes its name from the organization Jones helped found a year ago to stir up a grass-roots insurgency against the plutocrats we now call the 1%—and now seek harness the insurgent energies expressed by the Occupy movement into lasting institutional reform. “The American dream—the idea that ours is a land where any hard-working person can better herself or himself—is at risk of being wiped out, right before...
  • Alan Gottlieb on America-Wide Constitutional Carry: It’ll Never Happen

    The Truth About Guns ^ | 16 April, 2012 | Robert Farago
Referencing today’s post on Glenn Beck and Constitutional Carry, I bumped into the founder of the Second Amendment Foundation at the NRA convention. I asked Alan Gottlieb if he could foresee a day when the entire country enjoyed permitless concealed carry (a la Alaska, Arizona, Wyoming and Vermont). “It’ll never happen,” the gun rights champion stated flatly. “New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Hawaii—it would have to get through the legislature, and that just isn’t in the cards.” Never? “Not in my lifetime.” Given Mr. Gottleib’s considerable contribution to our collective gun rights, let’s hope that’s a very long time. Let’s...
  • Politically, gun control is dead

This week marks five years since the massacre at Virginia Tech, where a mentally ill student, Seung Hui Cho, used two handguns he had bought legally to kill 32 people and wound 25 others. Other than a relatively minor law to improve the national database used for background checks, no significant gun-control legislation followed that tragedy. Since then, there have been several mass shootings, including additional school rampages and the attempted assassination last year of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona. Yet there remains little political will to reform this country's flawed gun-safety rules — unless, of course, someone is proposing...

India unsettled by illegal firearms by Staff Writers Guwahati, India Apr 13, 2012 Indian security officials say they are increasing concerned about firearms security. The government is particularly unsettled by the proliferation of forged arms licenses in Nagaland in northeastern India. Recent police criminal investigation department inquires have determined that several armed private security guards and criminals in Assam possess illegal firearms purchased by using fraudulent arms licenses issued in Kangpokpi in Manipur and Dimapur in India's troubled Nagaland. India's Nagaland state is in Indiay's far northeast and borders the state of Assam to the west and north as well...

THE UK government faces claims it is failing to meet its international search and rescue obligations after official figures revealed a dramatic fall in the number of missions undertaken by Britain since the scrapping of Nimrod reconnaissance aircraft. Answers to written questions in the House of Commons reveal a sudden decline in Britain's involvement in international missions following the abandonment of Nimrod, leading the SNP to accuse the UK government of "recklessly" running down Britain's capabilities. The UK received an average of six requests a year for search and rescue help from neighbouring states before the withdrawal of the sea-patrol...

From: Man Alive! A survival manual for the human mind. by Greg Swann Chapter 9. The high cost of mindlessness. When you are not thinking carefully, you are not not-thinking. If you are not asleep and not unconscious, you are always thinking – always sustaining an uninterruptible mental “dialogue” with yourself in Fathertongue. But if you are not thinking carefully – thinking mindfully – then you are thinking carelessly – mindlessly. Most of the academic nonsense I have mocked in this book consists of a scrupulous cataloging of the processes and consequences of human mindlessness – which is misrepresented by...

Iran at the Rubicon by James Zumwalt Herndon, Va. Apr 12, 2012 In January 49 B.C., the army of Julius Caesar stood before a bridge crossing the Rubicon River separating the province of Gaul -- where Caesar was governor -- from Italy proper. As governor he had the right to lead an army within his province. But taking it across the river into Italy proper was deemed a challenge to the Roman Senate's authority -- an act prohibited by law and punishable as treason. Due to the Senate's fear of Caesar's rising popularity among the people for his numerous military...

Basically the GOP is too divided to ever unite. There is a deep level of distrust and various factions want different things. People do not agree on whom the best candidates are anymore. Us Conservatives, like me, were all over the map as person after person fell apart in the presidential republican primary. Romney is the final nail in the coffin. Newt, to me, has no chance and he has his own baggage. He has a good message though, but it is too late to do much. I personally think it is time to just end the party.

Justice for Trayvon by Charles M. Blow, columnist for the New York Times (where else?). The tears begin with the opening paragraph: "A boy's blood had been spilled on a rain-soaked patch of grass behind a row of mustard-colored condominiums by a man who had pursued him against the advice of 911 dispatchers. That man carried a 9-millimeter handgun. The boy carried a bag of candy." The cascade of lacromosity quickly turns into a tsunami: Americans saw the anguish of the boy's father and the tears of his mother. America saw a child who was its own. America saw its...
