Phoenix, Ariz., Dec 18, 2009 / 02:40 am (CNA).- A new Catholic radio station launched in Phoenix on Thursday, becoming the 24th station of the Immaculate Heart Radio network in the western United States. The local bishop says it will be a “channel of evangelization.”The new station, broadcast at KIHP 1310-AM, is the result of a five year effort to bring Catholic radio to the Phoenix market, the Phoenix Business Journal reports.
Violent gangs in well-to-do neighborhoods increasing [Phoenix AZ]

PHOENIX - Violent gangs are popping up in the last place you would ever expect: Upper-middle-class Valley neighborhoods. The parents are doctors and lawyers. Some live in gated communities but police say these educated, privileged high school and college students are just as willing as your average street thug to steal, cheat and even kill. Twenty-two suspected gang members have been arrested so far and investigators say more arrests are coming. They range in age from 19 to 24 years old. Investigators say they committed crimes in all corners of the Valley and those crimes were becoming increasingly violent.

Coyote Attacks Increase In The Valley ( PHOENIX )

People Say Animals Are Preying On Larger Livestock. People living in major Valley neighborhoods... that coyotes have all but overtaken their neighborhoods. Don Hoopes and his 7-year-old son Jordan have a new ritual every night. They need to make sure all their animals are tucked safely inside, now that they know what can happen if they don't. Neighbor Richard Tate said, "I saw one yesterday morning trying to attack dogs in broad daylight." Tate's had a couple sheep slaughtered by coyotes already. He said they even tried to go after his ram. Tate said , "My concern is that if...

Now a person has managed to slice 14 cats down their spine. Another 20 cats were poisoned and dumped into a Phoenix canal. Lots of flags and love of country on display . It happened in front of the State Senate. If they continue to ignore us using the first they will eventually see us use the 2nd amendment.

Phoenix police on Friday released an audio recording of a 911 call made in the case of an 8-year-old Liberian girl allegedly raped by four young boys last month. In the five-minute call, the manager of the Phoenix building complex where the girl lived tells the dispatcher that a resident says a teenage boy locked the girl in a vacant apartment and had her screaming. The manager also says the girl came out of the apartment in only her underwear and holding her dress in her hand. The girl has been in state custody since the July 16 incident. The...

Bishop Olmsted on the Devil and John Vianney

Phoenix Bishop Thomas Olmsted says a lot of things in his column this week that would have got him labeled a loon in my high school Theology class. But that was in the 80s when the real loons were teaching high school Theology. We were taught not to take stories of miracles or the existence of the devil as literal. Such beliefs and talk were “mysto-babble” and indicative of an immature faith. We needed to get to the allegorical sense and to help us there we were given exhaustive naturalistic explanations of the miracles in the Bible. (note: My school...

Protestors spar on health care (Obama in Phoenix)

Thousands of protesters and supporters of President Barack Obama’s health care reform efforts stormed the streets of Phoenix Monday, as the nation’s president came to town to address veterans. Eating breakfast at 7 a.m. at Tom’s Tavern in downtown Phoenix, Leona Meditz of Phoenix said the U.S. government isn’t designed to decide who should or should not get health care services. Instead, she said, the nation is built on competition, as insurers compete to provide coverage to citizens. Meditz said she read the 1,000-page health care proposal document, saying the effort is based on socialized medicine. “We need choices,” she...
