What is the Institute? A good question. It began as a repository for odd things I scanned - and by “scanned,” I mean I took pictures with a video camera, and used a frame grabber to get the images. Cheap scanners didn’t exist. As time went on, anything that was “vintage” or “retro” and could be gently mocked went into the Institute.

ISLAMABAD - Tashfeen Malik - who the FBI says pledged allegiance on Facebook to the Islamic State before helping her husband kill 14 people in San Bernardino, Calif. - was born in Saudi Arabia to a middle-class Pakistani family mainly associated with agriculture or private businesses. Her father, Gulzak Malik, previously lived in the Karor Lal Esan locality of District Layyah in Pakistan's tumultuous Southern Punjab province. Tashfeen Malik, 27 years old when she was killed Wednesday in a rented SUV in a shootout with law enforcement, went to that province several years ago to study pharmacy in Multan city...

A US consulate employee stationed abroad had a child taken from his care because officials feared the minor was in danger following systematic abuse and neglect, Daily Mail Online has leaned. Documents have exposed how the International Trade Administration staff member subjected the minor to shocking care while working abroad and living in a house owned by the government. An investigation found the child was routinely underfed and encouraged to take their clothes off in the consulate residence so the man could allegedly take pictures of them naked. At the time the unidentified employee also harassed female colleagues during his...

American soldiers, American civilians, and other innocent people are going to die because Pres. Barack Obama wants to release photographs of prisoner abuse. Note: I said, “wants to release” — not “has to release,” or “is being forced to release,” or “will comply with court orders by releasing.” The photos, quite likely thousands of them, will be released because the president wants them released. Any other description of the situation is a dodge. If President Obama wanted to refrain from releasing these photos in order to protect the military forces he commands or promote the security of Americans — his...

Today marks the 25 year anniversary of Adobe Photoshop being launched and changing the way we see the world. Here’s a look at how Photoshop started and how far it has come in the past two-and-a-half decades. The birth of the software can be traced back to 1987, when developer Thomas Knoll created a simple pixel imaging program called Display. It was able to display grayscale photos on a black-and-white monitor.

An obscure group duped Senator Inhofe’s office. The delegation’s U.S. leader says it was a “misunderstanding. ”WASHINGTON — A delegation consisting of Ukrainian members of parliament, a paramilitary leader, and one Georgetown professor gave a senator's office photos purportedly of the Russian military invading Ukraine that were later debunked. Several photos allegedly showing the Russian military in eastern Ukraine that ran on the Washington Free Beacon on Tuesday were quickly shown to actually be photos from other conflicts, some from years earlier.

An Oregon judge has acquitted a 61-year-old man who admitted taking photographs up the skirt of a 13-year-old girl as she shopped at a Target store in suburban Portland, lawyers in the case said Friday. Washington County Circuit Court Judge Eric Butterfield ruled on Thursday that Patrick Buono did not break the law when he surreptitiously took the pictures of the girl in January 2013, said his defense attorney Mark Lawrence. "He did not deny it and he feels real bad about it too, by the way," Lawrence said. The girl did not notice his actions, Lawrence said, but another...

Got a smartphone and a telescope? It’s a sight now common at many star parties. Frequently, you see folks roaming through the darkness, illuminated smartphone aimed skyward. Certainly, the wealth of free planetarium apps has done lots to kindle a renewed interest in the night sky. Inevitably, after peering through the eyepiece of a telescope, the question then arises: “Can I get a picture of that with my phone?” The short answer is yes, with a little skill and patience. Now simply aiming a camera at the eyepiece of a telescope — known as afocal astrophotography — and shooting without...

"Photographer Levi Bettweiser is the man behind the Rescued Film Project, an effort to find and rescue old and undeveloped rolls of film from the far corners of the world. He recently came across one of his biggest finds so far: 31 undeveloped rolls of film shot by a single soldier during World War II. Bettweiser tells us he found the film rolls in late 2014 at an auction in Ohio. About half the rolls were labeled with various location names (i.e. Boston Harbor, Lucky Strike Beach, LaHavre Harbor). “I know nothing about who shot the film or who it...

WASHINGTON -- The Justice Department is investigating whether Guantanamo Bay detainees charged with roles in the Sept. 11 attacks were improperly given photos of CIA officers or contractors, according to a person familiar with the investigation. The investigation, headed by the Justice Department's counterespionage chief, John Dion, is trying to determine if military lawyers defending the detainees divulged classified information or compromised covert CIA officers, according to the person, who was not authorized to discuss the investigation and spoke only on condition of anonymity. It is a violation of federal law to identify CIA covert personnel, and it is a...
