  • The awkward Sunngard automatic pistol

Early in the 20th century one of the weakness observed by an inventor named Harald Sunngard in automatic pistols was that during reloads while under stress were often bungled by shooters. This would leave them vulnerable to return fire without being able to shoot back. This Norwegian inventor came up with a solution. There were two parts to this, the first was to use a big magazine, second was to store a spare magazine right in the well of the pistol for immediate use. The grip of the pistol needed to be big enough to store two identical magazines. One...

Clandestine weapons like the World War II FP-45 pistol, later dubbed the Liberator by the Office of Strategic Services in 1944, have always intrigued me. It remains the rarest of American martial handguns from the conflict, with original examples usually starting in the $1,500 range for rusty, damaged pieces and the best examples, with their impossibly rare waxed shipping boxes, bringing over $7,000. Myths and misinformation hide the pistol’s real story; they weren’t wildly inaccurate junk guns that exploded after a few shots, and they were never tossed out of airplanes over occupied Europe en masse. THE FP-45 PISTOL was...

That's Rubber BandsWhat happens if you wrap a Ruger SR1911 pistol with Rubber Bands? How many rubber bands will it take to cause the 1911 pistol to malfunction? Is one rubber band powerful enough to stop the slide from functioning properly? Will this create an over pressure situation and kaboom the 1911 pistol? This has been suggested by viewers on multiple occasions and seemed like a fun video to do! This is a wacky function test. Here's a short video transcript Were gonna see how many rubber bands it takes to disable this glock. So put in a comment below...

In 1929, German gun-maker Waffenfabrik Walther began developing a new nine-millimeter pistol for military use. The development violated the Treaty of Versailles that ended World War I, so Walther kept it secret. Early Walther attempts focused on scaling up its PP line of pistols to chamber the larger nine-mil round. This pistol, the Militarpistole, wasnt strong enough to withstand the pressures and recoil of the nine-by-19-millimeter round. Walther began work on a new design in 1935 following a request from the Heereswaffenamt, the German armys weapons-technology agency. The Heereswaffenamt wanted a pistol to replace the Luger P08 one that...

I’m not going to use that tired chestnut, “What price safety?” The Rohrbaugh R9 is expensive; it’s also the smallest, most concealable autoloader, chambered in 9X19 para, available on the market today. It has all the features I wanted in a concealed carry pistol: hammer fired, double action only, European style heel mounted magazine catch, grip panels* and no safety. My first excursion to the range after it arrived was an absolute disaster – I had treated it as if it were a service weapon. It is not. It’s so small, tolerances are so tight and heat dissipation is so...

Shocking test results for the Armatix iP1 "smart gun" One of the most clever tricks liberals have devised to crater gun ownership in the United States is their insistence that if we can't get rid of guns, we should make everyone own safer and smarter guns. While neither the NRA or most gun owners I know are opposed to the exploration of new technology in firearms, there is a tremendous amount of resistance to government mandates of unproven, expensive and dubious design experiments. One of the big examples of these so called “smart guns” has been the Armatix iP1. Hailed...

In a surprising break from decades of compliance with a 19th century treaty, the Army has said it will likely allow its troops to use hollow-point and frangible ammunition in its handguns, arguing the rounds are commonly used by law enforcement and for self defense and pose less of a risk to bystanders than fully jacketed rounds. The previous ban on the use of hollowpoint ammunition for military rifles and handguns stems from the first Hague Convention of 1899, where ammunition that expand or flatten easily was banned for use in war. Though the United States never ratified that part...

MILLSTADT, Mo. -- At first glance, it seems absurd to suggest that a small company on the outskirts of St. Louis could be a serious player in the race to provide the U.S. Army with its next handgun. BATAVIA Patty Glomb, recording clerk in the Genesee County Clerks Office, sat at her desk Tuesday and motioned to her left and right, then behind and in front of her. Her work space in County Building 1 was surrounded by drawers and cabinets full of file folders, all of them applications from county residents for new, amended or upgraded pistol permits. She and her co-workers, are, pun intended, under the gun. Its almost impossible to keep up, Glomb said. The backlog is partly a result of a change in Genesee County policy that makes it easier to obtain a...

In my assessment, the Smith & Wesson M&P Shield appears to be one of the more interesting product announcements to come out of the 2012 NRA convention that was recently held in St. Louis. With this announcement Smith & Wesson has thrown their hat into the ever crowding compact pistol arena. The M&P Shield is a striker fired weapon and is just .95 inches wide by 4.6 inches high and is just 6.1 inches long.It weighs 19oz. and comes chambered in either 9mm or .40 S&W. I have a friend and colleague who is moving to Fairbanks next week and he is looking for a pistol to carry in grizzly country. He is an avid outdoorsman and will be hunting up there on a regular basis, but the only pistol he currently owns is a Browning 9mm. He'd thought about getting a 1911A1, but I've pretty much convinced him that a .45ACP is okay against black bears, but is too slow hitting for effective use against grizzlies.
