Two city officials say an Alabama animal shelter's outdated equipment allowed two pit bulls to fatally maul 29 cats. WTVY-TV reports the dead cats were found Thursday by workers at the Dothan Animal Shelter. Shelter Director Bill Banks says the dogs forced their way out of a pen. They then pushed hard on a galvanized bar attached to a chain link fence, knocking it out of a clamp which allowed them access to the cats.

Julie Stackhouse’s goal last Sunday was to win the Donna Half Marathon, a popular race that weaves through the coastal communities of Atlantic Beach and Neptune Beach east of Jacksonville, Florida. Stackhouse, a Jacksonville local, had good reason to think she could break the tape—she’s won the race twice in past years, and has notched victories in the marathon and relay, too. But even before she came face-to-face with an aggressive dog, Stackhouse knew she wasn’t going to win. She estimates her canine encounter slowed her down only around 45 seconds in total, but her impressive finishing time of 1:25:54—enough...

... The most obvious way that cannabis fuels violence in psychotic people is through its tendency to cause paranoia. Even marijuana advocates acknowledge that the drug can cause paranoia; the risk is so obvious that users joke about it, and dispensaries advertise certain strains as less likely to do so. But for people with psychotic disorders, paranoia can fuel extreme violence. A 2007 paper in the Medical Journal of Australia looked at 88 defendants who had committed homicide during psychotic episodes. It found that most of the killers believed they were in danger from the victim, and almost two-thirds reported...

2018 is not a great year if you’re an emotional support animal. Southwest, American, Spirit, JetBlue and even Royal Caribbean have all clamped down on emotional support animals, but it’s Delta that has thrown down the hardest. Back in March, the airline began requiring that all passengers traveling with a support or service animal provide additional documents, outlining the need for the service animal as well as proof of the animal’s training and vaccinations, 48 hours prior to departure. Several months later, it increased restrictions once more, limiting passengers to “one emotional support animal per flight” and forbidding “pit bull...
