Volunteers at the Warren County Democratic headquarters, just north of Cincinnati, were shocked and disappointed by a political prank unloaded on them early Tuesday morning Ė someone dumped a pile of horse manure in the parking lot of the headquarters building on US 42, just north of Lebanon. If Mitt Romney is elected president of the United States, his religion, a serious, cultic distortion of the Bible and history in the eyes of many evangelicals, will have new standing and credibility, and likely experience an acceleration of its already fast expansion. Under Romney, some policies may languish in the swampy squish of centrism, one that embraces elements of Obamacare. If his leadership in Massachusetts is a sample, Romney may attempt to combine statist, modified Keynesian economics with Reaganesque supply-side policies, a mixture of oil and water. He is untested on national defense and foreign policy. If President Obama...

As President Obama and Vice President Joseph R. Biden campaign for re-election, they feel compelled time and again to remind anyone who has gathered to hear them that Americaís economic troubles started well before they got to the White House. American voters surely know that. The Obama ticketís real problem is that more and more voters are coming to understand that the current administration has no clue about which policies would help the national economy, and workers in particular, get back on track. Missouri Senate candidate Rep. Todd Akin, thrown under the bus by Karl Rove and the Washington GOP establishment for his "legitimate rape" comment, is making a strong comeback in the polls and is now better-liked than incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill. Five weeks after making the comments that at the time seemed career-ending, Rasmussen Reports has Akin six points behind McCaskill, 51 percent to 45 percent. When Mitt Romney blurted out his now notorious 47-percent lament, liberal gaffe-o-meters went ballistic, acting as though he were an American Ebenezer Scrooge who had just shoved Tiny Tim Cratchit into a ditch and then burned down a crutch factory. As several observers have noted, this amorphous statistic includes myriads of worthy beneficiaries indeed, such as veterans, social security recipients, the physically or mentally disabled, the deserving poor, and those utterly unable to take care of themselves in a society where the federal government has assumed tasks that once were the preserve of families, churches, voluntary organizations, and state or...

Lately I've been traveling coach cross-country on Delta Airlines. I took the opportunity to read In The Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson. Told from the perspective of a naive, American ambassador and his family, this exceptional, historical novel documents Hitler's ascent to power in Nazi Germany circa 1933. I have noticed that there is a SEVERE lack of "Presidential" campaign signs in my area. NOTHING like it was in 2008. I mean......I don't even see bumper stickers of support for either candidate. When I drive through the Black neighborhoods to picks up my kids.....nothing. No Obama signs. Other parts of town......nothing. Not even bumper stickers. I think people are TRULY afraid. This is TRULY CREEPY! There is a great family around the corner, bless their hearts, who have a sign that says "Vote Like Your Freedoms Depend On It". And I smile every time I pass it.......but NOTHING...

Please forgive me if all of this sounds ridiculous... But I have spent a little time viewing clips from this "Innocence of Muslims" film. It is so astonishingly poorly acted and produced that I cannot even compare it to the worst student movies I have ever seen.... And I have produced, directed, and SEEN a lot of junk in formats from Super8 to 35 and up. The piece is almost unbelievably bad. Unbelievably - as in - nothing I have ever seen from the West is this bad, this poorly edited, acted, written, lit, greenscreened. The piece is a parody...

I first met Mitt Romney in 2005. I was very impressed. I described him in this magazine as "informal, conversational, enthusiastic and speedy." Mitt Romney? Yes, indeed. But then, we were talking about something he really believed in, or seemed to: his universal health care plan for Massachusetts, which included an individual mandate--an idea I'd admired since it was proposed by Stuart Butler of the Heritage Foundation in 1989.
  • Deciphering How Statists Think about Gun Control

Even though I donít own that many guns, Iím an unyielding supporter of the 2nd Amendment. Indeed, I use gun control as a quick and simple of way of deciding whether politicians meet minimum standards of acceptability. Iím not a single-issue voter, though, since politicians have to pass a number of tests (unwavering opposition to tax hikes, support for entitlement reform, etc) before receiving the Dan Mitchell Seal of Approval. I guess this is why 99 percent of them fail. But Iím digressing. Back to the topic at hand, my support for private gun ownership and constitutional freedoms has motivated...

The absence of a filing deadline is a luxury here at the ranch when current events require more than the instant analysis demanded by editors needing constant content updates to feed the cyber beast. Yet, there they were, some of the best in our business, posting post-convention analyses as balloons and confetti fell from the rafters. TV talking heads do it all the time, and look what you get. It has been more than a week since the elephants packed their trunks, and a couple of days after the donkey show hit the road, plenty of time to grade both...
  • Omens of Doom? - Nate Silver gives 4-to-1 odds against a Romney win

................But why bring Nate Silver into this?Silver is the poll-analyzing guru of the New York Times, whose reputation as a wizard was developed in crunching baseball statistics before being applied to political campaigns. On Saturday afternoon, Silver published an analysis which asserted that Obama now has a nearly 80 percent chance of winning the election, with 317 Electoral College votes and 52 percent of the popular vote. All of which is very interesting -- and very important, if true.However,....I recall the Sunday in October 2010 when I arrived in New York's 25th Congressional District and was greeted by a Syracuse...
