This is my second posting, for anyone who may have missed it the first time. Bookmark the website located at the link. Copy the article you want to post and paste it in the top box located at the linked website. Press convert, then copy the converted text and paste it into the Free Republic "Body of Thread" box. Try it a few times. It's basically self-explanatory and very easy.

I don't know if this has impacted anybody else, but in recent weeks, I've noticed that HTML special characters are not rendering properly in HTML posts. For example, the character “ is rendering as “, the character ” is rendering as ”, and so on. A screenshot of a typical thread is here: Needless to say, that is really irritating. There is a workaround for this: replace these special characters with their corresponding HTML codes. The ones that FR is currently having problems with are as follows: ‘ "left single quote" ‘ ’ "right single quote" ’ “ "left double...

Like many others here, I don't have cable. So I rely on FR for unfiltered breaking news. And there where quite a few good and informative threads last night about the Paris attacks. Thanks to all the posters for that! Unfortunately, those threads were also peppered with distracting and silly attempts at humor. So here's my humble request. When the news is breaking - and serious - can we stay on-topic and avoid posting distractions?

Western Springs and La Grange members of an anti-gun violence group are asking area businesses to post signs depicting No Guns Allowed. A new state law allows residents to carry concealed weapons, pending approval of permit applications through the Illinois State Police. The first such permits are expected to be issued beginning March 1. I prefer to shop in places where I feel safe, said Katherine Mudd, a Western Springs member of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. She has children, ages 7 and 9, and has been handing out postcards to area businesses.

Just a suggestion for the FR powers that be (do we have a suggestion box?): Can another posting section be added below "Title of Thread", such as "description", "subject" or "sub-title"? I have noticed many duplicate postings are due not as much from failure to search, as failure to use original article titles in favor of a more descriptive thread. I think there is a place for both, and currently many posters will put their descriptive/subject text in parentheses after the title. Unfortunately this is not common practice and not defined as proper method although it obviously allows searches to...
