Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem Character Studies From The Bible Moses New International Version (NIV) 5 Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the wilderness.’” 2 Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go.” 3 Then they said, “The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Now let us take a three-day journey into...

ROME — Arguably the most powerful laywoman in the Catholic Church in the late 20th century is now a candidate for sainthood, after the launch of a beatification process on Tuesday in Italy followed by 18,000 people around the world via live streaming. Chiara Lubich, founder of the Focolare movement, died in 2008 at the age of 88. The bid to declare her a saint comes shortly after a mandatory five-year waiting period in Church law to open a beatification process expired. Bishop Raffaello Martinelli of Frascati, Italy, officiated at Tuesday’s launch of the process. Frascati is the diocese where...

Brethren: Peace be with you! As I approach my half century of life I began thinking about the lifespan for an American male like me. I've begun to reflect in all seriousness about my mortality. The Bible tells us that the typical lifespan for a man is 70 years, or 80 for "those who are strong" (Psalm 90:10). Contemporary scientific estimates fall within this ballpark for those of us who live in developed societies: between 75 and 80 years old. What does that mean? 75 years are almost 27,394 days; 657,450 hours; 39,447,000 minutes; or 2,366,820,000 seconds.80 years...

The Holy See Press Office has released the text of Pope Francis’s 2015 Lenten message. Entitled “Make Your Hearts Firm”-- a reference to a verse in the Letter of St. James-- the message, dated October 4, calls upon Christians to confront “the globalization of indifference.” “Indifference to our neighbor and to God also represents a real temptation for us Christians,” the Pope wrote. “Each year during Lent we need to hear once more the voice of the prophets who cry out and trouble our conscience.” He added: In the Incarnation, in the earthly life, death, and resurrection of the Son...

Spencer and his brother were adopted from Russia when they were 3. His brother was dropped during birth by the attending doctor, who didn’t know there was a second baby and has a brain injury as well as autism. He is in a respite care home and will be coming home next week as soon as they can get his medications right. Spencer has had headaches for a month and was attributed to a sinus infection. Last night, an MRI showed a very large tumor. He is heading to surgery now and it is not known how he will be...

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem Character Studies From The Bible Joseph New International Version (NIV) 42 When Jacob learned that there was grain in Egypt, he said to his sons, “Why do you just keep looking at each other?” 2 He continued, “I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there and buy some for us, so that we may live and not die.” 3 Then ten of Joseph’s brothers went down to buy grain from Egypt. 4 But Jacob did not send Benjamin, Joseph’s brother, with the others, because he was afraid that harm might come to him....

January 20, 2015Tuesday of the Second Week in Ordinary Time    Reading 1 Heb 6:10-20 Brothers and sisters:God is not unjust so as to overlook your workand the love you have demonstrated for his nameby having served and continuing to serve the holy ones.We earnestly desire each of you to demonstrate the same eagernessfor the fulfillment of hope until the end,so that you may not become sluggish, but imitators of those who, through faith and patience, are inheriting the promises. When God made the promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore by himself,and...

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem Character Studies From The Bible Joseph New International Version (NIV) 41 So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I hereby put you in charge of the whole land of Egypt.” 42 Then Pharaoh took his signet ring from his finger and put it on Joseph’s finger. He dressed him in robes of fine linen and put a gold chain around his neck. 43 He had him ride in a chariot as his second-in-command, and people shouted before him, “Make way!” Thus he put him in charge of the whole land of Egypt. 44 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I...

January 19, 2015Monday of the Second Week in Ordinary Time    Reading 1 Heb 5:1-10 Brothers and sisters:Every high priest is taken from among menand made their representative before God,to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.He is able to deal patiently with the ignorant and erring, for he himself is beset by weaknessand so, for this reason, must make sin offerings for himselfas well as for the people. No one takes this honor upon himselfbut only when called by God,just as Aaron was.In the same way,it was not Christ who glorified himself in becoming high priest, but rather the one who said...

"Who is of a merry heart has a continual feast." - Proverbs 15:15 Recommended Reading: Proverbs 15:14-17 “If you’re lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man,” wrote Ernest Hemingway, “then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a movable feast.” Paris is the City of Light. But how much better to have the promise in Proverbs 15:15 from the Father of heavenly lights who bestows on us every good and perfect gift (James 1:17). How richer a continual feast than a movable one! Those who truly know...

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem Character Studies From The Bible Joseph New International Version (NIV) 41 When two full years had passed, Pharaoh had a dream: He was standing by the Nile, 2 when out of the river there came up seven cows, sleek and fat, and they grazed among the reeds. 3 After them, seven other cows, ugly and gaunt, came up out of the Nile and stood beside those on the riverbank. 4 And the cows that were ugly and gaunt ate up the seven sleek, fat cows. Then Pharaoh woke up. 5 He fell asleep again and had a second...
