Robert Davi: Pro-life Profiler I know that we have been focused on politics lately on CMR. Yes, this is still a Catholic blog. I say this because we have received a few complaints this past week for our uber focus on the US presidential election. Our apologies, but as Amy says this topic is sucking up all the blogxygen these days, so why fight it? But this post is not about politics, per se so please stay with me. I say Please stay with me, because the next line might cause you to think that I am full of O-biden....

The state's new attorney general Tuesday argued in court papers that any of the state's tens of thousands of registered sex offenders who change residences should be prohibited from living near a school or park. Attorney General Jerry Brown's filing in federal court stuck with his predecessor's interpretation of Prop. 83, the sweeping sex-crimes initiative approved by voters Nov. 7. But Brown's position continues the legal confusion about a major piece of the initiative named "Jessica's Law" after a slain Florida girl. Gov. Schwarzenegger and other supporters of the law have said the provision banning sex offenders from living within...

OPPONENTS of Proposition 85, which would mandate that a parent be notified before a minor has an abortion, basically argue that teenagers will tell good parents -- open-minded parents like them -- if they are pregnant. But if pregnant teenagers don't talk to their parents, it probably is for a good reason. As in: their parents are close-minded, abusive or neglectful. They have a nifty-sounding sentence that sounds good until you think about it. As they told The Chronicle's editorial board last week, no law can make kids talk to their parents. Wrong. When minors need parental consent to do...

Last November, Proposition 73 - the parental notification initiative - lost by modest margin, 52.6 percent to 47.4 percent. Meanwhile, Schwarzenegger's four reform measures targeting teacher tenure, union dues, legislative district boundaries and state budgeting practices lost by sweeping margins. Now the parental notification measure - which would require doctors to inform a parent or guardian before performing abortions on girls under 18 - is back on the Nov. 7 ballot, as Proposition 85. And this time, Democrats and legal abortion supporters hope the measure - endorsed by Schwarzenegger in 2005 - will help boost his opponent, state Treasurer Phil...

California Parental Notification Abortion Initiative Has 1M Signatures by Steven Ertelt LifeNews.com Editor May 22, 2006 Sacramento, CA (LifeNews.com) -- The organizers of a November ballot initiative to allow parents to know when their minor teenager daughter is considering an abortion say they have more than 1 million signatures on petitions to qualify the measure for the ballot. They need nearly 600,000 valid signatures to qualify the measure. The proposal largely mirrors the wording of Proposition 73, which California voters defeated last year by a 52.6 percent to 47.4 percent vote. However organizers say the measure will fare better in...

The proponents of last year's failed parental-notification initiative are back, pushing a nearly identical measure for this year's November ballot. Buoyed by $2 million from conservative financier and newspaper owner James Holman, the campaign already has collected 700,000 signatures--100,000 more than is needed--to place a measure on the fall ballot. The campaign intends to turn those signatures, and more, in to counties across the state by mid-May, setting up a rematch of last year's heated abortion debate during the fall's gubernatorial election. "We've gathered more than 700,000 signatures and we are planning on qualifying for the November ballot," said campaign...

SACRAMENTO (AP) - Backers of a failed special election measure that would have forced doctors to notify parents or guardians before performing abortions on underage girls are circulating petitions to have Californians vote on nearly the same measure next November. Like Proposition 73, the initiative would require a girl under 18 to wait 48 hours after a parent or legal guardian is notified of her intention to get an abortion. Secretary of State Bruce McPherson on Monday cleared supporters to begin gathering signatures. Voters rejected Proposition 73 by 53 percent to 47 percent during the Nov. 8 special election, when...

Dear Governor: November 9, 2005 06:19 AM EST There is no such thing as a fusion candidate, no such thing as a bipartisan campaign or a non-partisan issue, and come election night, there are just two parties, one at the GOP HQ and one at the Dem HQ. There's a winners' party and a losers' party. Last night you were speaking to the losers' party. I didn't go. Why bother? The polls had shown for a few days that only Prop 75 had a chance (the measure to stop public employee unions from deducting political dues from their members' paychecks...

I hate Monday morning quarterbacking. But in this case I felt it necessary to comment, because we came so close to victory. The truth is, Christian conservatives have only ourselves to blame for Proposition 73, the Parental Notification initiative for not passing. Read More... CA Propositions 75, 76, 77 Defeated; Propositions 73, 74 Could Go Either Way: On the Eve of a Special Election, California voters defeat Propositions 75, 76 and 77, but divide on Propositions 73 and 74, according to a final SurveyUSA tracking poll. Support for Propositions 73, 74, 75, and 77 continues to erode. (Proposition 76 is addressed separately in the next box.) Proposition 73, on parental notification for abortions on minors, led by 11 points 1 week ago, and leads today by 4 points. It may hang-on and win, but if so, by the narrowest of margins. Extending the trend...

"On Church and State", by Lores Rizkalla, Freeper 'JustaWoman' Billy Graham said that "bad politicians are elected by good people who don't vote." I think the same is true of "bad propositions" passing because good people decide to stay home on election day. This Tuesday, California (among many other states) has a special election. Statistics say that an average of 5% of registered voters get out to vote in an off-year election. What's worse is the truth so beautifully, yet sadly, written by William Butler Yeats': "The best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity." Where...

The John Ziegler Show on KFI has revealed the identify of the questioners of last night's state-wide broadcast forum on NBC and Telemundo. The forum included Arnold, Barbar Kerr (teacher's union) and Fabian Nunez (Dem legislator). Two of the questioners for Arnold are members Democrat central committees and one is a Democrat Congressional candidate! This forum allegedly included an independently selected balanced audience.

The logic doesn't work. By definition, minors who get pregnant are less mature than those who do not -- in general, they belong to the subset of teens who have sex but don't use birth control at all or correctly, as opposed to teens who either use birth control consistently or abstain from having sex. So it doesn't make sense to have laws, like those in California, that give the least responsible teens more rights than are accorded a responsible teen who wants a tattoo. Still, I seriously considered voting against Proposition 73, a constitutional amendment that would require parental...

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Of the eight measures on the ballot for Tuesday's special election, voters appear to clearly favor only one, according to Los Angeles Times polls released this week. Proposition 73, which would require parents or guardians be notified before girls 17 and younger receive abortions, was supported by 51 percent of voters surveyed, according to a Times poll released Wednesday. Thirty-nine percent were opposed and 10 percent were undecided, according to the poll. The survey, released Wednesday, questioned voters on Propositions 73, 78, 79 and 80 - the four measures Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has not campaigned for....

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - California voters are increasingly leaning toward rejecting two dueling prescription drug initiatives, as well as an abortion measure requiring parental notification, according to a new statewide poll. The Field Poll released Wednesday also showed that a pharmaceutical-backed ad blitz is influencing how voters view rival measures addressing drug discounts for the poor, which are both trailing for the first time. The drug industry has raised $80 million to defeat Proposition 79, which would force companies to discount drugs for uninsured Californians. The industry, led by its lobbying outfit, the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, is...

Apparently abortion advocates will go to any lengths to misrepresent the truth about Parental Involvement laws in order to defeat Proposition 73 (The Parental Notification Initiative) on the upcoming special election ballot in California. Well this time one of their own is blowing the whistle on them. Dr. Joseph Zanga says: “The AAP authors cited the Henshaw study for four points, and in each case they misrepresented the results of the study. Unfortunately, this misinformation has been repeated countless times by opponents of Proposition 73 and extensively reported in the media. We hope that AAP, Planned Parenthood, and the media...

Whenever minor girls come in seeking abortions unaccompanied by adult family members, counselor and nurse practitioner Felicia Paxton asks them where their parents are. Paxton, who works at Planned Parenthood medical clinics in Los Angeles, says she prefers that a mother or father -- or both -- are there to support pregnant teens. She remembers a 17-year-old girl who had an abortion and cried out in the operating room, "I wish I could tell my mom!""I asked her, why won't she?" Paxton says. The girl answered: "Because she just wouldn't understand."Now a California measure on the Nov. 8 special election ballot, Proposition...

A Public Policy Institute of California polls shows none of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's initiatives on the Nov. 8 special election ballot with majority support. The poll also found voters also dissatisfied with the job performance of the governor, the state Legislature and President Bush. All results are from the sampling of likely voters. _ Proposition 73, the parental notification initiative, had support of 42 percent of likely voters but was opposed by 48 percent. _ Proposition 74, the teacher tenure initiative, was supported by 46 percent of likely voters and opposed by 48 percent. _ Proposition 75, the union dues...

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (AP) - Defending his special election before an audience of voters, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Monday said his "year of reform" ballot initiatives are crucial to continue the changes he started after taking office two years ago. He cast the Nov. 8 election as the next step of the 2003 recall election that propelled him to office. Voters, he said, sent him to Sacramento to rebuild the state's economy and fix a moribund political system. After 400,000 new jobs and billions in new revenue, it was time for him to enter Act II, he said. "Now is...

A member of the Stanford Democrats aids a student in signing up for the upcoming California special election. The Stanford Democrats, in partnership with Stanford Students for Choice, held a noontime Get Out the Vote (GOTV) rally in White Plaza yesterday to inform, register and empower students to vote in California’s Nov. 8 special election. Under overcast skies, the organizers managed to gather between 30 and 40 people, with many more passersby briefly stopping to listen. Stanford Democrats President Margot Isman, a sophomore, kept the event moving and high energy. “Let’s get registered,” she screamed to the crowd of onlookers....

I keep reading that stories that support for the ballot propositions backed by California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is very weak. Even the Washington Times claims two are failing ("in the polls"), as if that finding represented a concensus of polls (Oct. 17, "For Arnold stakes are high"). I had thought I had seen them doing well, so I looked it up on the internet. The most recent poll I could find was done by Survey USA, released October 2nd. Its results: Proposition 73: Physicials must notify a parent of a pregnant minor 48 hours before performing the abortion. Yes, 59%....

Compared to other measures on the November special election ballot, Prop. 73 hasn’t attracted much in the way of financial support or opposition. Also (and this is no surprise), Planned Parenthood is the largest donor to date contributing more than $1.1 million to keep parents from being knowing that their minor children are being subjected to an abortion,, an invasive medical procedure. TEEN PREGNANCY AND ABORTION RATES have been declining in California for years, and most pregnant girls tell a parent before getting an abortion. So Proposition 73, requiring doctors to inform a minor's parents before performing an abortion, has little to offer this state — and much to take away. It adds to the court system's burdens, threatens to apply only to poorer teens and introduces troubling language to the state's Constitution. Knowing that this is a strongly pro-choice state, the proposition's backers are reassuring voters that they don't have to be anti-abortion to support the initiative. You just have to...

SACRAMENTO -- Removing any chance of a surprise endorsement in the upcoming special election, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced Friday his support for measures restricting teen abortion and creating a voluntary program for drug discounts backed by the pharmaceutical industry. The governor is also opposing an initiative aimed at regulating the energy system. The announcement comes as his campaign team begins rolling out its array of TV ads statewide and on the heels of his announcement last week that he's running for re-election. Observers said Schwarzenegger is looking to rally his Republican base in hopes of getting a big turnout on...

Addressing a California ballot initiative, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said he would "kill" anyone who took one of his daughters to have an abortion without notifying him. "I have a daughter," Schwarzenegger said in an interview with the Sacramento Bee. "I wouldn't want to have someone take my daughter to a hospital for an abortion or something and not tell me. I would kill him if they do that." The Republican governor, who has two teenage daughters and two preteen sons, was responding Tuesday to Proposition 73, an initiative that would make most abortions for minors illegal without prior notification of...

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger came out on Friday in favor of an initiative that would require parents to be notified before their daughter has an abortion if she is under the age of 18. Schwarzenegger, who called the special election for Nov. 8, announced his position on all of the propositions although he had already endorsed four as part of his plan for changing government. He will not actively campaign for the other measures, however. Schwarzenegger told the Sacramento Bee in an interview earlier this week that he would "kill" someone who took one of his own daughters in for an...

Abortion opponents in California have tried for over two decades to make it harder for girls to terminate pregnancies without their parents' knowledge. In the special election called by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, they may finally get their chance. Among the most hotly contested of the eight initiatives on the November ballot is a constitutional amendment that would require doctors to give parents or guardians written notice 48 hours before performing an abortion on a minor. Adults would not have to consent to the procedure, but sponsors hope the notification requirement would reduce California's teen abortion rate - the nation's fourth-highest...

I've been getting calls about the various ballot propositions for the Special Election. Here's how I see them: Proposition 73: Parental Notification for Abortion. If parental consent is required for a child to use a tanning booth or get her ears pierced, shouldn’t parents at least be notified if she’s getting an abortion? YES. Whether you’re pro-life or pro-choice, this should be the all-time no-brainer. Proposition 74: Teacher Tenure. Do parents have a right to expect a higher level of competence before a teacher is granted life-time tenure? YES. This modest measure simply increases the teacher probation period from two...

The following initiatives have qualified for California's Nov. 8 special election ballot. Propositions 74, 76 and 77 are part of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's "year of reform" package. PROPOSITION 73, PARENTAL PERMISSION FOR ABORTION: A constitutional amendment promoted by anti-abortion activists that would require girls 17 and younger to get parental permission to receive an abortion. It is opposed by abortion-rights organizations that say many minors live in homes where they risk emotional abuse or physical violence, or where the pregnancy is a result of incest. PROPOSITION 74, TEACHER TENURE: Would increase the time required for public school teachers to gain...

As signatures were being gathered for Proposition 73, the initiative to require pregnant teens to notify a parent before getting an abortion, James Holman's network of Catholic newspapers went to work. His Los Angeles Lay Catholic Mission profiled a mother who was horrified that her 13-year-old daughter - who she didn't even know was pregnant - was taken to the hospital, bleeding from an abortion. His San Francisco Faith newspaper ran a boldface headline on a local anti-abortion rally: "Soooooo Impressed! 6000 Pro-Life Marchers Hit the Streets." His San Diego News Notes touted the Proposition 73 campaign with articles repeatedly...

SAN FRANCISCO - Opponents and supporters of a proposed constitutional amendment requiring parental notification before doctors can perform abortions on minors have filed lawsuits challenging statements that the other side provided for the state's voter guide. The lawsuits, filed in Sacramento Superior Court by Proposition 73's sponsors and by a pro-abortion rights group called Campaign for Teen Safety, specifically take aim at the rebuttal arguments the opposing group submitted for the upcoming ballot guide. In it, each group offers its view of the ballot initiative's potential impact. The legal tit-for-tat is just the beginning of what promises to be one...

Proposition 73 would require notifying parents when a minor seeks an abortion, Proposition 74 would extend the probation period for new teachers from two to five years. Proposition 75 would require public employee unions to get annual written permission from members to use dues for campaign contributions. Proposition 77 is an attempt to take the power to draw legislative and congressional districts away from the Legislature and...
