Purple Hearts proposed for Fort Hood victims

Washington (CNN) -- Military victims of the Fort Hood massacre will be eligible to receive the Purple Heart if Congress passes a bill introduced Tuesday. Non-military victims could receive the Secretary of Defense Medal of Freedom -- the civilian equivalent of the Purple Heart. Both military and civilian personnel killed or wounded in the November 5 attack would be granted the same legal status as combatant casualties in Afghanistan and Iraq. The bill was introduced by Texas GOP Rep. John Carter, who represents Fort Hood in the House of Representatives.

TARGET: TOKYO

There is no massive statue at Sagami Bay of an angel with a sword and a coronet. No rows of white crosses above “99 Beach.”*** That the region around Tokyo isn't dotted with American war memorials is a matter of science, luck, politics – and endless controversy. These were all objectives in Operation Coronet, the planned seaborne attack on Tokyo in World War II. The greatest battle that never was. Guadalcanal, North Africa, Italy, Tarawa, Saipan, D-Day, Iwo Jima, Okinawa – even the planned invasion of the southern Japanese island of Kyushu – were all prelude. Each a step toward...

Do the wounded at Ft. Hood get a Purple Heart?

I'm not military, but my understanding is that a Purple Heart is for those wounded in action. Do these dead and wounded qualify? If not, would it be proper to lobby for them to receive the medal.

GIVE THEM THE PURPLE HEART

Should they get the Purple Heart? The soldiers who were shot Thursday at Fort Hood, the ones who were killed and the ones who survived -- should they get the Purple Heart? It’s the medal, generally speaking, that we give GIs who are wounded by enemy action in combat. Often, when dignitaries come through military hospitals, they will award the Purple Heart to recuperating soldiers, Marines, airmen and sailors. If you are hit by an IED, you get the Purple Heart. If you are shot in a firefight, you get the Purple Heart. If you get a shrapnel wound from...

Will Purple Hearts be Given to the Fort Hood Soldiers?

by deeming this a "criminal" act, instead of a terrorist attack, will the Obama administration refuse giving Purple Hearts to our wounded and fallen at Fort Hood? General Cone should not be considered for further promotion, and probably relieved of command for failing to properly secure the Fort Hood installation in wartime. General Casey, Chief of Staff of the Army is working to treat this event as a "criminal act" and not a wartime "terrorist attack". This foolish, "politically correct" thinking is what lead to the 9/11 attacks: a failure to properly identify, and react to, a deliberate attack on...

Thompson, of Lake Worth, Fla., reached for his loaded .38 caliber revolver and shuffled his way out back where his dog was growling ferociously. The World War II veteran encountered a drunken man who couldn’t speak English; 26-year-old Jose Pasqual was trying to fend off Thompson’s Rottweiler/Doberman pinscher mix, according to the Palm Beach Post.
Forward Operating Base Shank, Afghanistan - The soldiers in his New York-based combat unit call Staff Sgt. The reason for the nickname: He's just earned his fifth Purple Heart after being shot in the left knee in a firefight 100 miles south of Kabul, military officials said. "One of my friends said, 'You're the luckiest unlucky person I know,'" said Camacho, 24, who grew up in Saipan...

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. -- A Seminole County family is happy to get a piece of its family history back, even if it's not the real thing.
Thursday, Purple Heart Awarded After 91 Years (World War I)

Ninety-one years after a Herkimer soldier was injured in World War I, he's posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. In 1918, Private First Class Floyd Jackson was on patrol for his unit in France when the German Army released chlorine gas. Jackson warned his unit to put on their gas masks. By doing so, he inhaled the gas himself, but his actions saved the lives of the men in his unit. He had lung damage and was hospitalized and discharged in 1919. On Monday, his daughters received his Purple Heart from Congressman Michael Arcuri. Purple Heart awarded after 91 years Ninety-one...

Bataan Death March survivor awarded Bronze Star, Purple Heart

He wore the uniform of the Army, and later the Air Force, for 26 years, retiring in 1964 as a chief master sergeant.Rather improbably and inexplicably, Dragich left the military without any decorations for fighting and surviving one of World War II’s most inhumane episodes — a forced 65-mile march in which...
