Lil E. Tee, the 1992 Kentucky Derby winner campaigned by the late Cal Partee of Magnolia, was euthanized Wednesday at Old Frankfort Stud in Kentucky because of complications from an intestinal problem. I Want Revenge is a horse on a mission. The son of Stephen Got Even has traveled across the country to get a head start on his compatriots back home. While they remain in California, content to scamper along on the synthetic surface, oblivious to the test that awaits them on May 2, I Want Revenge is willing to find out right now, once and for all, whether he will get hit by a dirt bomb or take to the loam like a kid to a sandbox. If it turns out to be the latter and he can defeat a...

FONTANA, Calif. -- What goes around comes around, and in Brian Vickers' case, it came around at pole-winning speed Friday at Auto Club Speedway. With a lap at 183.439 mph (39.250 seconds) Vickers claimed the top spot for Sunday's Auto Club 500 Sprint Cup race, the second event on the 2009 schedule for NASCAR's foremost series. Vickers, whose No. 83 Red Bull Toyota was wrecked after contact from Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s Chevrolet in last Sunday's Daytona 500, rebounded smartly from that catastrophe, edging three-time defending Cup champion Jimmie Johnson (183.164 mph) by .059 seconds at the 2-mile speedway.

The sport is suffering declines in sponsorship, attendance and financial stability, and the roots of the problem go a lot deeper than the lousy economy. Ratings are falling more rapidly than those of other sports "It's not NASCAR's job to tell us what we can spend and how to run our business," says Richard Petty, who also sees franchising as a great way to foster fan loyalty. "The Green Bay Packers may lose their quarterback," says Petty. "That doesn't mean they lose their fans." Says Ty Norris, general manager of Michael Waltrip Racing, "Franchising is critical and should become one...

Peb's long, lustrous career with the Daily Racing Form and its sister publication, the now-defunct Morning Telegraph, officially ended on December 31, but finis actually came months before, over an uncomfortable lunch in Princeton, New Jersey, and should have become obvious to many of his fans on October 25, the concluding day of the Breeders' Cup. On the front of the Form, where Peb's imaginative take on the big day had been a mainstay since the Breeders' Cup began in 1984, there was a full-page color photo of Curlin. The hatchet men at the Form let Peb pick the good-bye...

Cindy McCain doesn't remember all the details. It might have been six years ago. Maybe seven. But this much, at least, McCain recalls with perfect clarity: She was watching television with her oldest son, Jack, when footage flashed across the screen of race cars skidding sideways as though they were on ice. DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A slumping economy is being blamed for keeping as many as 30 percent of NASCAR fans away from the Daytona International Speedway races this Fourth of July weekend. "Normally this place is packed and we know everybody but now I only see like 20 people I know," a NASCAR race fan said. The Daytona economy counts on the tourist dollars generated from the Fourth of July races. However, this year's big race -- the Coke Zero 400 -- is not a sell out and 20 to 30 percent of fans who normally come are staying home...

(SNIP) And then there's Phoenix International Raceway, the iconic desert mile nestled at the base of the Estrella Mountains outside of town. While it's renowned for producing great racing, the 44-year-old facility lacks most of the comforts of the other, newer stadiums in the greater Phoenix market. The vast majority of its 76,812 grandstand seats are simple aluminum bleachers. With the exception of suites spanning the first two turns and a tunnel that replaced a pedestrian bridge, this rather austere facility still looks very much like it did decades ago. In a city famous for its sports stadiums, Phoenix's racetrack...

Big Brown, who will be seeking the coveted Triple Crown in the June 7 Belmont Stakes (gr. I), has a "slight" quarter crack on the inside of his left front foot, trainer Rick Dutrow said Sunday, May 25. Dutrow said he noticed a small spot on the colt's foot Friday afternoon and notified hoof lameness specialist Ian McKinlay, who treated it. By Saturday, it had turned into a slight quarter crack, five-eighths of an inch long. McKinlay applied iodine solution and said he’s confident it is very minor. He will “lace it up,” and if everything is good, the colt...

Danica Patrick and Sarah Fisher, despite being women working in the same male-dominated sport, have had wildly different experiences in the months leading to Sunday's race. Patrick, as has been the case at every race since her debut in 2005, diligently posed for snapshots and signed the latest magazine spreads featuring her photo. Fisher, meanwhile, signed a few autographs and posed for pictures, but this time had the added duty of collecting checks and wads of cash — gifts from devotees desperate to help her raise enough funds to enter her car in the race. The scene underscored the stark...

WASHINGTON, May 6, 2008 – The U.S. Navy is using NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s star appeal to attract future sailors.
