Think you've got a hard-knock life? Try sitting through the new "Annie." A rewritten, re-orchestrated but far from revitalized version of the old Broadway musical, this latest edition moves it out of the Depression and into a modern, tech-driven New York..... Where's the excitement? They're not very apparent here, judging by the kids I saw at my screening. The row in front of me spent most of the movie talking....

On Friday, I was on the train to New York to do a teach-in on Ferguson at NYU. Beats headphones on, lost in thought, peering out the window, I suddenly saw a white hand shoving my work carry-on toward me. Startled, I looked up to see the hand belonged to a white guy, who was haphazardly handling my open bag, with my laptop perched just inside to make space for himself on the seat next to me. That he wanted the seat on the now full train was not the problem. That he assumed the prerogative to place his hands...

RUSH: Yesterday we made mention of the fact that Barack Obama was running around talking about the fact that one time, that time long ago, he was insulted that somebody thought he was a valet. Not when he was president. Over seven years ago, somebody thought he was a valet, and that meant the United States was racist. That meant that he had a legitimate chip on his shoulder, and his wife was running around saying (summarized), "Yeah, I went into Target, and I was first lady. Noam Chomsky, author and political theorist, called the United States a “very racist society” and then slammed one of its most beloved presidents, Ronald Reagan, as a prime example of a very racist man during an interview on GRITtv about Ferguson-related issues and race relations. “This is a very racist society,” he said, Raw Story reported. “It’s pretty shocking. SPRINGFIELD — Dr. Eric E. Whitaker, one of President Barack Obama’s closest friends, was declared a “hostile witness” in the multimillion-dollar fraud trial of a Chicago couple Monday — after an explosive hearing in which Whitaker suggested prosecutors were biased against African-Americans. U.S. District Judge Richard Mills declared Whitaker “hostile” just minutes after Whitaker testified in his Springfield courtroom in the trial of businessman Leon Dingle Jr. and his wife, Karin Dingle. On the witness stand for more than two hours, Whitaker voiced concerns that the Justice Department’s pursuit of state grant-fraud cases in the Central District of Illinois has...

America reached an important milestone in 2011. That occurred when, for the first time in the history of the country, more minority babies than white babies were born in a year. Soon, most children will be racial minorities: Hispanics, blacks, Asians, and other nonwhite races. And, in about three decades, whites will constitute a minority of all Americans ... This milestone signals the beginning of a transformation from the mostly white baby boom culture that dominated the nation during the last half of the twentieth century to the more globalized, multiracial country that the United States is becoming ...

In 2008, the election of President Obama was roundly hailed as a major step forward for race relations in America — but in a lengthy interview with New York Magazine, Chris Rock explained that the term "race relations" doesn't capture what's really happening. Eric Holder Jr., the nation's first black U.S. attorney general, is preparing to announce his resignation Thursday after a tumultuous tenure marked by civil rights advances, national security threats, reforms to the criminal justice system and five and a half years of fights with Republicans in Congress. Two sources familiar with the decision tell NPR that Holder, 63, intends to leave the Justice Department as soon as his successor is confirmed, a process that could run through 2014 and even into next year. A former U.S. government official says Holder has been increasingly "adamant" about his desire to leave soon...

Focus on police bias obscures meaningful debate on structural racism that perpetuates racial injustice and inequality. In the wake of the death of Michael Brown, the unarmed teenager shot by police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri, on Aug. 9, the public has heard quite a bit about the town, its residents and their supposed violence. But about half an hour drive west of Ferguson, along a highway straddling the Missouri River, you will come to what may seem a planet away: St. Charles County. St. Charles is a “Whitopia” — a predominantly white county that has posted 6 percent...

The risk of dying from a gunshot wound is twice as high for African Americans as it is for white Americans, according to a new study based on 11 years’ worth of data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Between 2000 and 2010, the rate of firearm-related fatalities in the U.S. was 9.05 per 100,000 people for whites and 18.51 per 100,000 people for blacks. When factoring in the 3.38 deaths per 100,000 people of other races, the country’s overall gun-related death rate was 10.21 per 100,000 Americans, researchers reported Thursday in the journal BMJ Open. That racial...

Denzel Washington’s experience shooting his new movie The Equalizer in Boston revived memories of racial discrimination he encountered more than 30 years ago. Washington was at the Toronto Film Festival press conference Sunday for Equalizer, which premieres at Roy Thomson Hall. For most of the time, he, director Antoine Fuqua and actors Chloe Grace Moretz and Marton Scokas talked about acting methods and the uneasiness of the first day of shooting. But a question about filming the movie in Boston and a comment Washington made about his wife’s upcoming one-woman show led to unexpected revelations Washington recalled how about three...

So I was reading an online review of the book "“The Half Has Never Been Told: Slavery and the Making of American Capitalism” that was critical of the assertions made in said book that slavery was significant in the growth of the US economy. The next day I came to look at it again and found out it had been removed. The reason because apparently quite a number of people had found it racist and offensive. This is the review itself in its entirety before it was removed: “FOR sale: a coloured girl, of very superior qualifications…a bright mulatto, fine...

After a while it becomes painfully obvious and it can no longer be ignored. Barack Obama is first and foremost the President of Black America. Barack Obama sent a convoy to the funeral of Michael Brown. It was a delegation of three officials. He sent three fewer to the funeral of Margaret Thatcher: The White House sent three officials to attend Monday's funeral for Michael Brown in St. Louis -- three more than it sent for former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's funeral last year. The administration's handling of the Brown funeral already has started to raise comparisons between the...

Since Barack Obama was elected president, only 10 percent of Americans believe that race relations have gotten better, according to a New York Times/CBS Poll published today. The poll found 17 percent of blacks and 8 percent of whites believe race relations have improved under Obama. Thirty five percent of Americans believe that race relations have gotten worse in the Obama era -- including 40 percent of whites and 21 percent of blacks. Fifty-two percent of Americans polled said that race relations have stayed about the same.

FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) -- Police records show that 163 arrests have been made in the Ferguson protest zone since the shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown, but just seven are residents of the St. Louis suburb. St. Louis County spokeswoman Candace Jarrett provided information to The Associated Press on Thursday with the name, address and birth year of each person arrested, and the charges against them.

Attorney General Eric Holder said Wednesday that he understands why many black Americans distrust the police as he made a one-day swing through the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, Mo., where a black teenager was fatally shot by a white police officer almost two weeks earlier. Holder made the comments during a meeting with about 50 community leaders at the Florissant campus of St. Louis Community College in which he heard about their own issues with law enforcement officials. Ferguson has endured more than a week of unrest since the August 9 death of 18-year-old Michael Brown, who was shot...

As a freshman at Columbia University in 1970, future Attorney General Eric Holder participated in a five-day occupation of an abandoned Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) headquarters with a group of black students later described by the university’s Black Students’ Organization as “armed,” The Daily Caller has learned. Department of Justice spokeswoman Tracy Schmaler has not responded to questions from The Daily Caller about whether Holder himself was armed — and if so, with what sort of weapon
