AIRO — Egypt’s top prosecutor died on Monday of wounds he sustained when a powerful bomb detonated next to his car as he was driving to work, state news media reported. The prosecutor, Hisham Barakat, is the most senior Egyptian official to be killed since insurgents began a wave of violent attacks against the military-backed government nearly two years ago. At least seven other people, including two bystanders, were hurt in the attack, which incinerated several cars, in a residential area of the capital’s Heliopolis neighborhood. Gen. Osama Bedeir, the head of Cairo security, said the explosive device was planted...

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned on Thursday that acceding to the Palestinian demand to suspend Israel from FIFA threatened to unravel the international soccer organization. In an interview with reporters in Tel Aviv, Netanyahu commented on Friday’s upcoming vote to oust Israel at the FIFA congress in Zurich, calling it a “blatant intrusion of politics into the field of sports.” According to Netanyahu, who is also an avid soccer fan, “sport has become an arena of goodwill and cooperation between peoples, and because of that an attempt to attack Israel in FIFA will cause FIFA to collapse.” The prime...

BUREIJ, Gaza Strip — On Friday, the annual congress of FIFA, the governing body of world soccer, is scheduled to vote on a proposal to suspend Israel from the organization. The Palestine Football Association called for this measure because Israel prevents our national team from participating in normal training, travel and competition. If the corruption scandal now enveloping FIFA derails the vote, we will continue to press the issue. The Palestine national team has belonged to FIFA since 1998, but we do not trust the current president, Sepp Blatter, to represent our interests. Past assurances to act have not been...

The United States says it is "deeply concerned" about the death sentences handed down to former President Mohamed Morsi and more than 100 other defendants for a 2011 mass prison break. "We have consistently spoken out against the practice of mass trials and sentences, which are conducted in a manner that is inconsistent with Egypt's international obligations and the rule of law," a State Department official said Sunday. The sentences were handed down Saturday in a Cairo court. The Grand Mufti, Egypt's top religious authority, will make the final decision on the sentences on June 2. The former president is...

TEL AVIV – A Palestinian previously convicted of multiple terrorism charges is the official currently leading the dialogue with a prestigious international soccer federation from which the Palestinian Authority is seeking to get Israel expelled. If the Fédération Internationale de Football Association, or FIFA, suspends or boots the Jewish state, the move would have a dramatic impact on Israel’s ability to compete in international soccer competitions. As part of a larger boycott movement against Israel, the PA’s Palestinian Soccer Association has filed a formal complaint with FIFA to have Israel’s membership suspended. Back in the Sixties, there was a popular bumper sticker slogan that read “question authority.” In that dubious era of phony psychedelic bohemians and inane pseudo-revolutionaries, it was one of the few pieces of advice I took seriously. Even today it remains good advice, and perhaps even more so. Questioning authority lies at the foundation of how and why this country was formed. The War of Independence was the ultimate challenge to an authority that hadn’t only become questionable, but beyond toleration as well. The framework of the Constitution was designed in part to allow both its citizens and its...

**SNIP** He wants to transform America and create a new society fundamentally different from the old one. Obama has little regard for the Founding Fathers because they allowed slavery to exist, making America the most racist nation, and he views the Constitution as an outdated document that limits his freedom of action. He rejects capitalism as an exploitive, oppressive system that produces inequalities in wealth. To Obama, America is not a force for good in the world, but rather a militaristic, imperialistic menace that has exploited weaker nations and done irreparable damage. Thus, his goals are to reduce America’s military...

Three consecutive events, initiated by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, make it clear that hidden within the campaign propaganda are genuine threats to Israel’s security and standing. The assumption that the killing on the Golan Heights of the senior Hezbollah figures and the Iranian general, which has been attributed to Israel, was necessary is not convincing. Israel has already suffered lethal retaliation, in which two soldiers were killed. The first step toward an in-depth understanding of adult behavior is to comprehend its origins in childhood. Whether adaptive or maladaptive, the enduring patterns of thinking, emoting, behaving and relating that define adult personality begin in the early years of life. In fact, our earliest experiences with caretakers and others, acting on inherited temperament factors, strongly determine our later personality traits, including those expressed in political values and beliefs. Just overnight, Israel rolled up a six-member cell linked to the Islamic State with the alleged orders to execute strikes against Israeli targets inside the Jewish stateÂ’s territory. On IsraelÂ’s borders, Hamas to the south and Hezbollah to the north represent a constant terrorist threat. Iraq’s Grand Mufti accuses IRGC, Iraqi government, Shiite militias of genocide and rape of Sunnis they 'liberated' from ISIS In an explosive TV interview aired last week, Iraq’s Grand Mufti Rafi Al-Rifa’i, the highest Sunni authority in the country, accused the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the Iraqi government, and Iraqi Shiite militias of mass genocidal killings and rape of Sunni men and women from Iraqi towns and villages “liberated” from ISIS (Islamic State). Mufti Al-Rifa’i posed the unanswerable question, “Why should we fight ISIS? So the Iranian IRGC can take over? The same Iranian IRGC that is running operations...

In the wake of the damning American Senate report on the CIA’s torture practices French far-right leader Marine Le Pen risked a backlash when in an interview she claimed there are times when torture can "be useful to make someone talk". The report uncovered the brutal CIA interrogations of al-Qaeda suspects in the years after 9/11 and sent shockwaves around Washington and the rest of the world. The UN and human rights groups are now even calling for the prosecution of the US officials involved but Marine Le Pen, leader of the right-wing Front National party, seems to have a...

U.S. Marines are on high alert. So are the CIA and the White House for that matter. Politicians on both sides of the aisle also are ready to enter the fray. All the fuss is over the Senate Intelligence Committee's $50 million investigation of Bush-era CIA interrogation tactics on detainees in the years following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The long-delayed report on the use of torture - "enhanced interrogation techniques" - by the U.S. government is expected to be released Tuesday morning. This won't be a full disclosure, but the report's 480-page executive summary. There will also be...

Obama administration officials said Monday the “necessary precautions” have been taken at U.S. facilities around the world in preparation for the looming release of a Senate report on the alleged use of torture by the CIA. White House press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters the president strongly supports the release of the declassified support, but that the administration also recognizes the document could spark outrage and may put American interests across the globe in danger. The report is expected to be released Tuesday. It likely will include bombshell details of CIA practices during the war on terror. While the White...

In Malaysia's current political climate, it is no longer possible to distinguish Islamic radicals from Islamic moderates. Despite official boasting about the country's diverse population and commitment to pluralism, Islam and the government have essentially merged. For two decades, the ruling United Malays National Organization (UMNO) government invested enormous public resources in building up a network of Islamic institutions. The government's initial intention was to deflect radical demands for an extreme version of Islamic governance. Over time, however, the effort to out-do its critics led the UMNO to over-Islamicize the state. The UMNO's program has put Sharia law, Sharia courts,...

Amiri Baraka died Thursday after weeks of failing health, a family spokeperson confirmed. He was 79. A playwright, poet, critic and activist, Baraka was one of the most prominent and controversial African American voices in the world of American letters. He was born Everett LeRoi Jones on Oct. 7, 1934, in Newark, N.J. A gifted student, he graduated from high school two years early and went to college at New York University and Howard University. After serving in the Air Force for more than two years, Baraka -- then Jones -- was dishonorably discharged for reading communist texts.
