Radiyule: An Old-Time Radio Christmas

Bear in mind that some of the following actually did air on Christmas days past. But if you're any kind of old-time radio nut---and I am, certifiable, glazed, and dry-roasted---you have got to love the cornucopia of surviving Christmas-themed radio shows. (No, Virginia, this nice Jewish boy does not have a problem with what amounts to saying "Happy birthday!" to a nice Jewish boy!) You could consider the survival of these shows something of a miracle in itself. (When you consider that a lot of the original sponsors and even network outlets saw fit to trash several thousand shellac discs...

Phoenix, Ariz., Dec 18, 2009 / 02:40 am (CNA).- A new Catholic radio station launched in Phoenix on Thursday, becoming the 24th station of the Immaculate Heart Radio network in the western United States. The local bishop says it will be a “channel of evangelization.”The new station, broadcast at KIHP 1310-AM, is the result of a five year effort to bring Catholic radio to the Phoenix market, the Phoenix Business Journal reports. The last three letters of its call sign stand for Immaculate Heart Phoenix.Though the radio station used by KIHP was priced at four or five million dollars...

Interesting Comments From a Protestant Who Listens to Catholic Radio

I ran across this post today from an Evangelical Protestant commentator named Michael Spencer. He described how he spent the better part of a day recently listening and thinking about Catholic radio and the greater and lesser degrees of effectiveness of the men and women who host shows on major Catholic radio networks like EWTN and Ave Maria. Though I don't agree with all his observations (Scott Hahn is indeed the intellectual heavy-weight Protestants make him out to be), I found myself agreeing with some them and, on one or two points, agreeing wholeheartedly. But even in the areas where...

A REMINDER TO AMERICA WHERE ALL MONEY COMES FROM

My apologies if you've heard this before, but it bears repeating. It's one of those things in our present society that would be funny if it weren't realistic. There are certain segments of the population, on both extremes of the financial spectrum, both educated and uneducated (maybe even more prevalent with "elite, East Coast, intellectual" politicians and economists) that ignore the old saying, "money doesn't grow on trees". They actually believe it does. No, really, I'm not even kidding! The below sound clip took place in the liberal wonderland of Detroit, MI (WJR radio.

Classical station has new business model: support of donors Boston is following a trend in radio that’s taking place in other cities across the nation: Its only 24-hour classical music station now depends on listeners - not advertisers - to keep it afloat. Last week’s Federal Communications Commission approval of WGBH’s $14 million purchase of WCRB-FM (99.5) means the classical musical station is now a public broadcaster, with a business model that draws revenue from donations and corporate sponsorship instead of relying on advertising. Because classical music fans tend to be older, and advertisers typically want to court a younger...

The Sacramento County Superior Court jury concluded that Entercom Sacramento, which operates KDND-FM (107.9) "The End," was negligent after ignoring several warnings that a morning show contest could have fatal consequences, according to KTXL-TV (Channel 40) in Sacramento.
