  • Rahm Emanuel Wants $65.00 Registration Fee For Every Illinois Handgun.., An Idea For Obama Too?

    02/10/2012 10:33:12 AM PST · by Sasparilla · 14 replies
Is Rahm Emanuel floating gun control ideas to Obama for use during his “second term?” Does former Presidential advisor and current Chicago machine politics confidante Rahm Emanuel, with his own personal team of bodyguards, really believe that requiring a $65.00 per handgun registration fee every five years for every handgun owned in Illinois will really have any impact on gun crime in Chicago or anywhere in Illinois? Grooming himself for a run at the Governor’s office, Emmanuel claims that such a gun registration scheme will make the streets safer. He even thinks that this registration will cut illegal gun sales....

Rahm Emanuel proposes $65 per-gun fee and registry BY FRAN SPIELMAN City Hall Reporter fspielman@suntimes.com Updated: February 10, 2012 2:19AM Illinois handgun owners would be required to register their weapons with the state — and pay a $65-per-gun registration fee — under a mayoral plan proposed Thursday to arm police with the information they need to solve crimes and reduce illegal firearm transfers. --- It comes at a time when the National Rifle Association and its allies among Downstate lawmakers are making a major push for concealed carry legislation. Earlier this month, the city of Chicago wrote a check for $399,950 to the Second Amendment Foundation, a gun rights group located in Bellevue, Wash. The check was a reimbursement for legal fees the foundation incurred in the McDonald v. Chicago case, which resulted in the United States Supreme Court overturning the city’s ban on handguns. “The city lost that action,” said Julianne Versnel, the foundation’s director of operations. “

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants lawmakers to require that all handguns in Illinois be registered with the state, or gun owners could face felony charges. A statewide gun registry is key in helping solve Chicago crimes that involve handguns from outside the city, and would also help crack down on gun trafficking, Emanuel is expected to argue Thursday. Under Emanuel's proposal, handgun owners would have to pay $65 for a registration certificate from the state, which would function much like the title to a car. Illinois law currently requires that gun owners and shooters have a firearm owners identification card,...

In a trade that made a lot of sense for Democrats, Chicago Mayor Richie Daley decided to take a powder as Mayor-for-Life in October 2010, while Obama chief of staff Rahm Emanuel succeeded Daley as mayor of the big, broken city by the lake. The player to be named later in the trade was William Daley, Richie’s brother. Bill Daley took Emanuel’s place as chief of staff with the charge to be the White House’s bridge to the business community. The Obama administration was hoping that Daley’s business savvy would help them repair a rocky relationship with big business- and...

Rahm has deep financial ties to new Sun-Times owners December 22, 2011 It's nice to have friends in the media. Mayor Rahm Emanuel sure will have a ton of buddies in one key local media outlet, because virtually every one of the Sun-Times' new owners has been a major contributor, business partner or civic ally of his. For instance, at least eight of the 12 board members of the new company, Wrapports LLC, have donated to Mr. Emanuel's campaign fund in the past year, collectively plunking down $241,000 that I found in a quick survey of Board of Elections disclosures....

And by next spring, with Rahm's imperial powers growing, things might be so different, so loud, that we may wish for the quiet times of yore. In 'Washington Post' op-ed, Chicago mayor says 1967 borders are starting point for negotiations, not end point. US President Barack Obama's call for a Palestinian state to be based on 1967 lines with mutually agreed land swaps does not mean a return to the these borders, according to a Washington Post op-ed by Chicago mayor and former US chief of staff Rahm Emanuel. "[Obama] reminded us that every president and many Israeli elected leaders have recognized that the borders are one starting point for negotiations, not the end point," Emanuel wrote. "That statement does not mean a return to 1967...

Chicago cancels July 4 fireworks, leaves shows to Navy Pier Chicago is getting out of the Independence Day fireworks business. There will be no city-run July 3rd or July 4th fireworks show this year — not even a scaled-down version — thanks to former Mayor Richard M. Daley’s decision to hand off the Taste of Chicago to the Park District to reverse $7 million in festival losses over the last three years. That means Chicago’s only official fireworks will be the previously scheduled show at 9 p.m. July 4 at Navy Pier. That 15-minute show is paid for by the...

Mayor Rahm Emanuel said today that he agreed with the decision Monday by Chicago police to close North Avenue Beach after several people began showing signs of heat-related sickness. The beach was closed about 6 p.m. after Chicago Fire Department paramedics were called to the beach to deal with several people who required medical attention. At least four people were taken to area hospitals from the beach including one 18-year-old who was taken in serious-to-critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital during the Memorial Day holiday.

Billionaire Donald Trump, who's eyeing a run for the White House, gave a sizeable campaign contribution to President Barack Obama's chief of staff as he ran to become Chicago's mayor, a recent report highlighted. The Illinois Review, a coservative blog, reports that Trump gave Rahm Emanuel $50,000 in December 2010. Those numbers came out in January, 2011, but are being pointed out now because of Trump's possible presidential bid. This isn't the first time Trump has donated to candidates in Illinois, but it is the largest contribution. State election records show Trump also gave $5,000 to George Ryan, the Republican...

New CPS chief owes us $100K for quitting, Rochester schools sayBy ROSALIND ROSSI and Fran Spielman Staff Reporters Apr 21, 2011 02:13AM Chicago’s next Schools CEO, Jean-Claude Brizard, should pay the cash-strapped Rochester, N.Y., school district to cover the cost of searching for a new superintendent — an estimated $100,000 — now that he’s walking away from a three-year contract that began Jan. 2. That was the view Wednesday of a two-term Rochester School Board member who calls himself a “fan’’ of Brizard’s. “You don’t have to be F. Lee Bailey or Johnny Cochran to figure this out,’’ Rochester School...

Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel is laying down the law to two unions whose cooperation he needs to turn Chicago around: teachers he wants to work a longer school day and laborers he wants to simply show up at work in greater numbers. During the campaign, Emanuel declared his support for curtailing teachers’ right to strike. He also made it clear that, if teachers won’t agree to work longer hours for extra pay, he’ll ask the Illinois General Assembly to mandate it. On Monday, Emanuel said he has made his feelings known to a Chicago Teachers Union that did not support his...

CHICAGO – Lawyers for Rod R. Blagojevich, the former governor of Illinois, are asking a judge for access to notes from an interview President Obama had with federal authorities over his former Senate seat. The request was made in a motion filed Monday in advance of Mr. Blagojevich’s April 20 retrial on federal corruption charges. The judge rejected a similar request before Mr. Blagojevich’s first trial last summer. Mr. Blagojevich will be tried again on 20 counts after the jury in the first trial was deadlocked on most charges. Prosecutors claim that Mr. Blagojevich tried to sell the Senate seat...

Mayor Daley tried Friday to answer the $18 million question posed by his inspector general: why City Hall tolerates having 200 motor truck drivers “paid to do nothing” but drive crews to their work sites and wait in the vehicle until they finish. “It was a 1985 or `83 [work rule]. ... It was prior [to the Daley years]. You should have reported that,” said the mayor, who took office in 1989. Daley was asked why he did not negotiate an end to the costly rule during 22 years of negotiations with the Teamsters Union. “You have to give and...
