  • Rep. Rangel gets court date to fight congressional censure

A federal appeals court has set a Nov. 13 date to hear oral arguments in Rep. Charles Rangel’s lawsuit against his House colleagues, who censured the New York Democrat in 2010. Mr. Rangel has argued the House failed to give him due process when it investigated and voted to censure him, and he is seeking to have the smear expunged. His case has already been rejected by a federal district court, which said he didn’t have standing to sue and, even if he did, the court wouldn’t touch what was an internal House matter, better left as a “political question.”

Hell hath no fury like a congressman scorned. Harlem Rep. Charles Rangel is giving the teachers union a lesson in political retribution for snubbing him and endorsing his rival Adriano Espaillat for Congress, sources said. Rangel is hitting the union where it hurts — by vigorously supporting non-unionized charter schools. The unions have been fighting desperately to stop or slow down charter-school expansion. “The congressman was disappointed the UFT [United Federation of Teachers] dumped him for Espaillat. I see Charlie speaking out more forcefully on the charter-school issue,” said a Rangel insider. “He doesn’t have to be concerned about offending...

It’s clear the left will say anything to make people believe that the Tea Party is racist, no matter how ludicrous. Tonight on Hardball, Charlie Rangel claimed that the Dixiecrats who opposed the Civil Right’s Act are in fact today’s Tea Party, arguing that it’s hard to distinguish between the two. In fact, he goes on to say that the Dixiecrats that were from the South are the ‘grandparents’ of the Tea Party. Rep. Charles Rangel has barely wrapped his primary victory speech and already faces a new ethics charge — that he failed to properly disclose an all-expense-paid trip to China as part of his required financial filings. His camp is already rushing to amend the financial documents, the New York Daily News reported. But the oversight is especially notable for Mr. Rangel in that he has a history of ethical missteps that included a 2010 censure by the House for taking a trip to the Caribbean on corporate donor dime. This China trip came in August. Mr. Rangel was one of...

Charlie Rangel won re-election Tuesday, despite the ethical cloud still shrouding him, because all politics is local. Rangel’s censure by Congress in 2012 has been all but forgotten by his voters, and those who recall that embarrassing episode believe that “Charlie was shafted by Congress” for doing what other members have long gotten away with. (SNIP) If Puerto Rican pols backing Espaillat couldn’t move their bloc to him, one has to question their utility as endorsers. Former Bronx state Sen. ~~~ Rangel paused and took a quick glance in the direction of a four-foot blue cross affixed to Antioch Baptist, a venerable Harlem church that occupies several storefronts. “Would it be helpful? Look, if God came down and handed out some literature for me that would be helpful too.” With that, Rangel ambled into the sanctuary—past the 50 confused Spanish tourists who gawked at the well-dressed older gentleman with the quintuple-folded yellow pocket square—and contradicted himself. Standing at the pulpit, he first invoked God and then Barack Obama, portraying himself as the president’s apostle, put on Earth to protect Harlem...

In a post-Eric Cantor world, anything seems possible. And Tuesday’s races in Mississippi, Oklahoma and New York offer fertile territory for upsets and surprises. Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) is the underdog in a runoff with state Sen. Chris McDaniel, and could end up the first Senate incumbent to lose this year. Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) faces his toughest reelection challenge yet as he seeks a 23rd term. And Rep. James Lankford (R-Okla.) is trying to fend off a tea party-backed former state House speaker in the race for an open Oklahoma Senate seat. Colorado and Maryland also are holding primaries.

Facing the toughest reelection fight of his career against primary challenger state Sen. Adriano Espaillat, Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) has turned to unconventional measures to get out the vote ahead of Tuesday’s primary. He’s seen as vulnerable in part because of his age and long tenure in office, but the congressman has taken steps — quite literally, at times, dance steps — to dispel any notion that he’s unhip or out of touch. This weekend, he danced to the “Wobble” after being endorsed by a founding member of the Fugees at an event that also featured a customized rap about...

The hotly contested Democratic congressional primary in Harlem turned uglier than ever with challenger Adriano Espaillat’s campaign accusing Rep. A stunned Rangel, 84, who has marched and fought for civil rights during his five-decade career, insisted the accusation was a lie and immediately demanded an apology from Espaillat, a state senator. The explosive claim against Rangel was leveled in tweets by Espaillat campaign adviser Lis Smith.

If the lawmaker cheated on his taxes with little consequence, what harm can possibly come from comparing the tea party to the terrorist group Hamas. Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) on Sunday said that he feared the Internal Revenue Service scandal over political targeting of Tea Party groups would unfairly stigmatize other workers at the agency. “The biggest problem is that tens of thousands of IRS workers that work hard with all of this stigma being tax collectors, are getting a bad shake out of this,” said Rangel during a panel discussion on ABC’s “This Week.” The IRS acknowledgement that agents used higher scrutiny against conservative groups seeking tax exempt status has already claimed the job of acting director Steven Miller and has the White House...

Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) is suing Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and six other lawmakers, charging that they mishandled the Ethics investigation that led to his public censure in late 2010. In a complaint filed Monday in federal court in Washington D.C., Rangel claims the Ethics Committee that investigated his alleged wrongdoing are guilty of "numerous flagrant, knowing and intentional violations" of his due process rights. House members who approved his censure were "knowingly deceived" by the committee leaders – including then-Chairman Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) and ranking member Jo Bonner (R-Ala.) – into thinking that the probe "had been conducted in...

Appearing on MSNBC Thursday, Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY) claimed that “millions of kids” are killed by so-called "assault weapons," citing numbers that fall far short of the numbers reported by the FBI, The Blaze reported, “We’re talking about millions of kids dying — being shot down by assault weapons, we're talking about handguns easier in the inner cities, to get these guns in the inner cities, than to get computers. This is not just a political issue, it’s a moral issue and so when we condemn the NRA we should not ignore the fact that a lot of people that...

During an appearance on MSNBC this morning, Congressman Charlie Rangel was asked what he thought about the assault weapons ban being dropped from Senate bill. Rangel blamed the defeat on politics and money and then made the extraordinary claim that "millions of kids" are dying because they are "being shot down by assault weapons."

New York Congressman Charlie Rangel was asked by MSNBC anchor and openly homosexual Thomas Roberts what he thought about the next Pope and the direction of the Catholic Church. Here was Rangel’s response: “I hope they stick by their guns on same-sex marriage and telling a woman what she should do with her body.” Wow! Where has Charlie been all these years? Let’s see if the Gaystapo go after him to force an apology out of him. It doesn’t take them long to hunt down anyone who utters a word against their so-called lifestyle choice. Liberals will attack Rangel by...

Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY) took a swipe at American capitalism on Tuesday amid a discussion with MSNBC anchor Thomas Roberts about the Catholic Church’s ongoing conclave to determine who will be the next Pope. Rangel declared that the church needs a new pontiff in order to continue their global charitable works and that Americans support that charity because Americans do not value “capitalism by itself.”

This one’s long but stick with it. The good stuff doesn’t start happening until after we’re treated to the thousandth iteration of Charlie Rangel’s master plan to end war as we know it by reinstituting a military draft which virtually no one supports and which Congress will never again feel safe voting for. A draft which, incidentally, he thinks should now include women: “Now that women can serve in combat they should register for the Selective Service alongside their male counterparts,” Rangel said in a statement. “Reinstating the draft and requiring women to register for the Selective Service would compel...

(CNN) -- On Thursday, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta announced the Defense Department would lift the ban on women serving in combat, marking another significant milestone for equality in our nation. Taking this critical step forward to include women in combat strengthens our military by reducing the burden of the disproportionate number of soldiers who are making sacrifices. I sincerely hope that this will spark a national debate about who is fighting our wars and whether all of America can say that we're sharing the sacrifice. Since January 2003, at the height of the debate on the possible unilateral strike against...
