Educational Rap

Educational Rap Malcolm A. Kline, December 17, 2009 When storied public school teacher Marva Collins noticed three decades ago that inner city school children could memorize song lyrics but not Shakespeare, she challenged them to digest the latter. A new educational fad takes a different approach. “Flocabulary (www.flocabulary.com) is a Brooklyn-based publisher of educational rap and hip hop that is being used in lower socioeconomic school systems across the country and producing incredible results,” the group’s representative, Anna Richardson of Sunshine Sachs, claims. “The Education Research Institute of America (ERIA) just completed a study that proves Flocabulary’s efficacy in the...

Christian Side Hug is YouTube hit as celibate rappers warn of 'sinful' hugging

Christian Side Hug is YouTube hit as celibate rappers warn of 'sinful' hugging A celibacy-advocating rap group has been advocating “Christian side-hugs” in a hit YouTube song, because frontal hugs are “sinful”, reports Tom Chivers. Gimme Dat Christian Side Hug, by a band of rappers apparently linked to a Californian ministry called The Father’s House, advocates standing side-by-side when hugging, to avoid the uncontrollable temptation that hugging face-to-face – and therefore crotch-to-crotch – would lead to. “This ain’t no front hug zone,” proclaims one of the rappers, who goes on to warn listeners that front hugs should only be permitted...

Respect: Putin goes gangsta at rap contest

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, never shy with a photo opportunity, took his man-of-the-people act to the hip-hop dancefloor, where he used a rap music competition to deliver an anti-drugs message. "Graffiti is becoming a true art, fine and delicate," Mr Putin, clad in a beige turtleneck and grey sports jacket, told a young crowd at the "Respect" rap contest. "And breakdance is something peculiar," he said. "This really is propaganda for a healthy lifestyle because it is hard to imagine breakdancing having anything to do with drinking and dope," Mr Putin said.
PEORIA — .More than 24 hours after a melee broke out at an apartment complex for Illinois Central College students early Sunday, police were still sorting out the details. Preliminary information from East Peoria police indicates a party Saturday night at WoodView Commons, an apartment complex at 100 WoodView Lane, grew out of control. “As best we can gather, the initial scenario is that there were some discourse between two gangs that became heightened by the playing of a certain rap song that insulted one of the gangs, and the fight was on,” Police Chief Ed Papis said Monday. “Whoever...

FARMVILLE, Va. — Richard Alden Samuel McCroskey III rapped about the thrill of murder in songs he posted on the Internet. Police believe the fantasy lyrics became a gruesome reality in a small Virginia college town. McCroskey, 20, was being held Sunday in the killings of four people who were found at a Longwood University professor's home near campus in Farmville, which is about 50 miles west of Richmond. McCroskey, of Castro Valley, Calif., faces charges of first-degree murder, robbery and grand larceny of an automobile, said Farmville police Capt. Wade Stimpson.
After shootings, Saugus club silencing hip-hop

Orchid Nightclub is crying racism but ready to comply with a selectman’s apparent demand that they stop playing hip-hop music. It makes me think the same thing you’re thinking,” said the club’s consultant, Anthony Cagliano, a former Saugus selectman. “I know the town has made it clear they’re not a fan of hip-hop music and the audience that hip-hop brings,” he said. “So we will get away from the hip-hop scene, which is unfair to the clientele.”...

Even in The Hip-Hop World the Ideas of Left and Right Battle for Supremacy

Inarguably, hip hop (rap) is one of the leading pop music genres; at least, it is one of the loudest. I did not know which hip hop singer to choose (I do not know any), so I queried Billboard magazine and found, at the time of this writing, a man named “Drake” to hold the top spot in that category, indicating his popularity, at least currently. So seeing a rapper blasting profane lyrics in their chamber is—Very funny!
