City Brights: John Laird: I Want Pete Wilson Back

A couple of months ago, I was doing an on-air interview with KPFA radio about the state budget and found myself saying out loud "I never thought I'd ever say this, but I want Pete Wilson back." The interviewer burst out laughing. Yes, Governor Pete Wilson did things I strongly disagreed with when he vetoed a bill on employment discrimination against gay people and when he frequently chose business over environmental protection - but he knew how to be Governor. If you have to have a Republican Governor, it would at least be nice to have one who didn't have...

Likely fallout from cookie-dough illnesses: more than 200 layoffs

A Nestle plant linked to an outbreak of illness has been shut temporarily, and the company said Monday that it expects to lay off more than 200 workers as a result. Preliminary results "indicate a strong association with eating raw prepackaged cookie dough," the CDC says. "It's likely that we're going to have some temporary layoffs at that facility," Nestle spokeswoman Roz O'Hearn said of the Danville, Virginia, facility that was churning out refrigerated cookie-dough products until Thursday. About 550 people work at the factory, but only about half of them work on cookie dough, she said. The rest work...

Nestle Recalls All of Its Refrigerated Cookie Dough ('Cuz We're Eating it Raw!)

(There's a toll to eating raw cookie dough.) The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told consumers today not to eat any varieties of prepackaged Nestle Toll House refrigerated cookie dough because the products could be contaminated with a potentially deadly form of E. coli. Since March, at least 66 people from 28 states have gotten sick after eating the dough. Of those, 25 people were hospitalized and seven developed a severe complication called hemolytic uremic syndrome, which leads to kidney damage and lifetime health issues and is often responsible for E. coli...

CA: Recall drive certified against Schwarzenegger -- again (Yes, another recall drive)

UPDATED AT 5:20 P.M. Secretary of State Debra Bowen today certified the fifth recall bid seeking to oust Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. A group called Taxpayers United to Recall Governor Schwarzenegger -- headed by John D. Fusek of La Habra -- now has until Oct. 22 to obtain 1,041,530 valid voter signatures, or 12 percent of the electorate, to qualify the measure for the ballot. It won't be easy.
CA: Recall bid against Schwarzenegger gets green light

An effort to recall Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger moved ahead Thursday when Secretary of State Debra Bowen certified an organizer's recall petition. The campaign to unseat the governor is being waged by Edwin Snell, a San Bernardino County resident who runs a political action committee called Recalls California. The recall petition claims Schwarzenegger "no longer represent(s) the interest of the people and has betrayed the trust of the voters." Proponents of the recall drive now have 160 days to gather signatures of 12 percent of the state's 8,679,416 registered voters, with a final filing date of Oct. 14.
