  • FR Help needed: List of relief delivered to Puerto Rico [Vanity, I guess...]

FReeper help needed, please. Roughly a week or so ago, a FReeper posted an extensive list of relief supplies and ships that had already been delivered to Puerto Rico. Would someone please re-post that list here on this thread? (A link to the original source would be even better!) My granddaughter is in a college politics course, and the prof and students say they haven't heard of any real help the US has supplied to Puerto Rico. (Of course, their source is the MSM-CNN...)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Trump administration on Wednesday asked U.S. lawmakers to approve $29 billion in disaster relief funds to assist victims of recent hurricanes that hit Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico. The aid request includes $12.8 billion in new funds to help storm victims and $16 billion to defray debt in the federal government’s flood insurance program.....

Gunmen waylaid a group of volunteers bringing aid to earthquake victims in Mexico, shooting one, raping another and beating several, all for $2,000 and a few cellphones. The group of Catholic youth volunteers left Mexico City in three pickup trucks loaded with food and relief aid for communities affected by the earthquakes in Oaxaca Tuesday morning, but a group of unidentified gunmen intercepted them and shot up their cars, wounding one of the volunteers, according to Siame. The gunmen raped one of the girls, beat one of the young men so severely that he almost died, and left with the...
  • Trump says he'll visit storm-ravaged Puerto Rico

President Donald Trump said Thursday he’ll visit Puerto Rico, adding that the island was “absolutely obliterated" by Hurricane Maria. This week, Hurricane Maria slammed into Puerto Rico, knocking out 100 percent of electrical power, destroying infrastructure and causing widespread flooding and mudslides. The Category 4 hurricane came as Puerto Rico was recovering from Hurricane Irma, which struck the U.S. territory earlier in September. “Puerto Rico is in very, very tough shape. Their electrical grid is destroyed. It wasn't in good shape to start off with, but their electrical grid is totally destroyed, and so many other things,” Trump said Thursday,...

It was just a matter of time before our ideologically flexible president started making deals across the aisle. The result is a $15 billion Harvey relief package that includes short-term debt ceiling and government funding increases, along with the promise of a messy end-of-year negotiation process.President Donald Trump most likely equates making deals with getting things done. But all deals aren't created equal, and for anyone who believes in fiscal responsibility, this deal, which passed the House and the Senate in spite of many disgruntled members, was particularly lousy.First, considering our $20 trillion debt, the only acceptable deal would have...

A Senate bill to address “predatory” toll penalties, technical problems with transponders and poor customer service at E-ZPass will die in the Senate Finance Committee this session, its chairman said Tuesday, along with a watered down House version that delegates supported unanimously on Monday.Instead, Senate Finance Committee Chair Thomas “Mac” Middleton said he is holding off legislation for a year to give the Maryland Transportation Authority time to improve customer service and pursue new contracts with vendors to operate Maryland’s toll system.Middleton told Maryland Reporter last month that he would move the bill towards passage if he didn’t see a...

Excessive penalties and poor customer service at the E-ZPass electronic toll collection system have put some Marylanders on the path to “toll bankruptcy,” Sen. Roger Manno told the Senate Finance Committee last week.“Folks [are] exasperated because they’ve been caught in a system that is not working,” Manno said.Broad enforcement powers enacted in 2013 to address toll violations have led to wage attachments, financial hardship and non-renewal of vehicle registrations at MVA, witnesses testified. Sen. Roger Manno “The penalty structure that we set several years ago in the General Assembly was not intended to be punitive,” Manno said. “It was not...

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg recently offered a surprisingly blunt assessment of Donald Trump. In an interview with the New York Times published Sunday, Ginsburg implied that the presumptive GOP nominee would do lasting harm to the Supreme Court if elected. “I can’t imagine what this place would be — I can’t imagine what the country would be — with Donald Trump as our president,” she said. “For the country, it could be four years. For the court, it could be — I don’t even want to contemplate that.” The left-leaning jurist also joked that if Trump were elected,...

Am I losing my mind? Donald Trump gives me the creeps at times. He offends my Christianity. His persona turns me off. He can be all other the map in terms of consistent principles. But there is something inside of me that wants him to kick the stuffing out of the powers that be. Even though I am a Cruz man I could see myself voting for the guy. Am I losing my mind?

A new battle is brewing over the future of Evangelical theology. Roger Olson, Evangelical theologian at Baylor University’s Truett Seminary, protests in a recent article that some Evangelicals (especially me in a recent article in the Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society) misunderstand “liberal theology.” We think, he says, that liberal theology “is a good label for any deviation from orthodoxy.” So we wrongly label, he says, “any deviation from or attempt to re-form orthodox Christian tradition as ‘liberal.’” Instead, he argues, liberal theology is that which makes modernity rather than Scripture its norm. Yet there are troubling signs that...

Windsor and Essex County donors have loaded a truck with 40,000 pounds of aid for Oklahoma City’s tornado victims, but red tape is keeping it in a Leamington parking lot. ---snip--- ...(US)customs supervisors, who originally told brokers working with the charity that the truck would fly through the border without trouble, changed their tune Thursday, Sauve said. “They were basically requiring endless documentation and approvals,” he said. ”We’re stuck with a truck with 40,000 pounds of food, totally full.”

I remember some consternation in the media a few weeks ago after Boehner split the original $60 billion relief package into two smaller bills that this meant the GOP was going to gut part of it. Absurd. Did anyone seriously believe Boehner et al. would risk more bad press by stripping out the pork after Chris Christie threw a big tantrum about how evil his own party was for even delaying the initial vote?I hereby retract my skepticism that the GOP leadership collectively has no balls. Lawmakers in the House of Representatives approved measures Tuesday to send more than $50...

On Wednesday I joined a Facebook conversation among my New Jersey relatives and friends voicing their outrage over the delay in the $60 billion Sandy relief package. Hoping to make people think, I wrote, "I want our roller coaster up and running by this summer, and I don't care if we have to borrow from the Chinese to do it." I was referring here to the Seaside Heights roller coaster that somehow managed to slide off its crumbling pier and land standing upright in the ocean. In the process, it became something of a symbol of Sandy's wrath. My irony,...

Mary Katharine Ham wrote last week about the porkfest in the Senate bill authorizing emergency relief spending for Hurricane Sandy, but the Senate hasn’t gotten the message yet. David Francis reports on more aspects of the larded-up bill for The Fiscal Times, while noting that this has become business as usual on Capitol Hill — especially while the normal budgeting process has been derailed: The Sandy emergency spending package also contains provisions that had previously been rejected or had not yet been considered by Congress. This includes a measure that alters how the federal government manages areas prone to flooding,...
