My Sister-in-Law is experiencing some serious medical difficulties at the moment, with very high BP and partial kidney shutdown. While the doctors are unsure of the problem, her Calcium levels are all over and they are trying to get her electrolytes stable. Please pray for her, and the whole family. In addition, my oldest granddaughter and great granddaughter are facing a different sort of trial, with Social Services in the middle of things, all based on a wild rumor. Please pray that they are reunited and the matter is favorably resolved.

A German court gave its backing yesterday to a decree by the country's Catholic bishops declaring that believers who refused to pay an eight percent church tax could not be considered Catholic and would automatically lose the right to receive Holy Communion and a religious burial. The verdict, which was delivered by Germany's chief administrative court in Leipzig, was a bitter defeat for Germany's grass-roots Catholics and conservative church campaigners who had denounced the bishop's decree as "pay and pray" and claimed it sent "the wrong signal". … The ruling was welcomed by Germany's Catholic bishops who said it had...

My poor son-in-law is doing everything he can to hold this difficult day together. I'm in a different state and pulling my hair out with worry. My husband is flying back home tomorrow. Over the past few centuries, science can be said to have gradually chipped away at the traditional grounds for believing in God. Much of what once seemed mysterious—the existence of humanity, the life-bearing perfection of Earth, the workings of the universe—can now be explained by biology, astronomy, physics and other domains of science. Although cosmic mysteries remain, Sean Carroll, a theoretical cosmologist at the California Institute of Technology, says there's good reason to think science will ultimately arrive at a complete understanding of the universe that leaves no grounds for God whatsoever. … Another role for God is as a...

This week's feature is to honor the memory of the late Herbert Lom who passed away last week. An exciting 1959 adventure(a British "western" of sorts) set in imperial India about the attempts to protect a young prince from Mohemmadan terrorists(sound familiar)? As a Bible-believing Christian, I don't agree with the universalistic quip Kenneth More's character makes near the beginning but other than that, it's quite a good historical drama. Lom plays a character that Hollywood(or in this case, London) wouldn't have the guts to include today, i.e., an Islamic villain.

The “Perfect Day” and our terrorist opponents’ possible plans for future attacks I have been told (by those conducting interviews with captured enemy combatants) that when we ask them “What is coming next?” they sometimes refer to the “Perfect Day.” You cannot understand what they are talking about if you do not understand the historical reference. Countless school children have been taught that Abraham Lincoln was the Great Emancipator. Others have been taught — and many have concluded — that the Emancipation Proclamation, which Abraham Lincoln announced on Sept. 22, 1862, has been overemphasized, that it was inefficacious, a sham, that Lincoln’s motivations were somehow unworthy, that slavery was ended by other ways and means, and that slavery was on the way out in any case. • God and Jerusalem

Who would have thought that God and Jerusalem would become controversial issues at this year's Democratic National Convention? Previous Democratic Party platforms had mentioned God and referred to Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. After both were initially missing from this year's platform, someone apparently realized that this was likely to raise questions about Democrats that they could ill afford to have raised in an election year. So the convention faced a vote on whether to restore God and Jerusalem to their party's platform. Rather than risk a roll-call vote from the delegates, the chair called for a voice vote....

CONNELLSVILLE, Pa. — School district leaders have delayed moving a controversial Ten Commandments display outside a junior high school indefinitely. Board members said it will stay put, and they are looking at all of their options to determine how to move forward. The monument is outside the Connellsville Area Junior High School. A student's parent and Americans United for the Separation of Church and State have each asked the district to take down the monument. In a statement, the group said the First Amendment gives parents the right to tell their children what religion to choose and not public schools....

Save for the parade of stupendous hats, there was little to alert passersby to the royal wedding Saturday morning in downtown Washington. The bride: Katie Walker, 26, a Cincinnati native who until recently was communications director for Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington. The groom: Archduke Imre of Austria, also 26, great-grandson of Charles, the last ruler of the Austro-Hungarian empire. Right now you’re thinking, “Wow. How’d she find an archduke?” Well, by going to church. Ken Wolfe, a friend of the bride who sang in the Gregorian chant group at her wedding, tells us the couple met two...

On patrol the other day, along Eglinton Ave. just east of Dufferin, I passed St. Simon’s Religious Supply Store. I am not fond of religion, but I do like the supplies. I have a relic in the form of a shred of cotton from a garment of Brother André, late of Montreal. I also keep a medal of St. Catherine of Siena with my car keys, a logical place if you think, like she did and I do, that the way to heaven is heaven. St. Simon’s is not about those kind of supplies. It is, however, a place for...

There have been questions raised about whether the attack on the U.S. Embassy in Libya was done in conjunction with the attacks on the Embassy in Cairo. This video brings us closer to answering that question. In fact, it not only points to the same attackers but possibly to Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi himself. Fast forward to the 1:15 mark in this video (if you don’t understand Arabic). Watch as the raw footage of a firefight in Benghazi is taking place. The news report loops the relevant portion of an exchange between gunmen, in which one can be heard, saying,...

The attacks on U.S. Embassies had very little to do with the latest film and much more to do with the old story of the Muhammad Cartoon and the failure of Muslims to prosecute internationally the culprits who drew the Muhammad cartoons. This will be another attempt to change the laws globally. Wisam Abdul Waris of Dar Al-Hekma (House of Wisdom) – about whom the Nour Salafist party announced publicly that its call to demonstrate was in support of – began a call to push for the passage of laws to be placed in the Egyptian Constitution – as well...
  • Karzai, Muslim Brotherhood Condemn Anti-Islam Movie (Not Attacks)

Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Egypt's ruling Muslim Brotherhood Wednesday angrily denounced a U.S.-produced film harshly critical of the Prophet Muhammad, raising fears that a new wave of violent protests will follow Tuesday's attacks on U.S. diplomatic installations in Cairo and Benghazi, Libya. Shortly after news emerged that the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other American diplomats were killed in Benghazi, the Afghan presidential palace released a statement condemning the "desecrating act" by the makers of the film, saying that its release "stoked interfaith enmity and confrontation, and badly impacted the peaceful coexistence between human beings."
