In 1517, Martin Luther posted a list of 95 Theses on his church's doors. His actions exposed the corruption of the Catholic Church and started what came to be known as the Protestant Reformation. Between the hours of 9 PM Saturday, February 16 and 9 AM Sunday, February 17, 2013, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and others will post this list of 95 LDS Theses onto the doors of LDS churches around the world. Taking the Initiative Against Depression "Arise and eat" —1 Kings 19:5 The angel in this passage did not give Elijah a vision, or explain the Scriptures to him, or do anything remarkable. He simply told Elijah to do a very ordinary thing, that is, to get up and eat. If we were never depressed, we would not be alive—only material things don’t suffer depression. If human beings were not capable of depression, we would have no capacity for happiness and exaltation. There are things in life that are designed to depress us; for example, things that are associated with...

Pope still extremely Catholic MOLLIE HEMINGWAY I hope everyone is having a blast with Day 2 of Papalpalooza. I've actually enjoyed some of the media coverage I've come across but we all know what happens when I post on good stuff. <crickets>Right. So let's look at other approaches taken.I know it's The Guardian but I did like the transparency of this piece, which reads something like a parody of how the mainstream media treat the Roman Catholic Church. Headline: Next pope's in-tray: five key issues for the Catholic churchWith Pope Benedict XVI announcing his intention to step down, we...

February 17, 2013 First Sunday of Lent Reading 1 Dt 26:4-10 Moses spoke to the people, saying: “The priest shall receive the basket from you and shall set it in front of the altar of the LORD, your God.Then you shall declare before the Lord, your God, ‘My father was a wandering Aramean who went down to Egypt with a small household and lived there as an alien. But there he became a nation great, strong, and numerous. When the Egyptians maltreated and oppressed us, imposing hard labor upon us, we cried to the LORD, the God of our...

The Baltimore Catechism Revised Edition (1941) Part One: The Creed Creation and the Angels Lesson 4 from the Baltimore Cathechism35. What do we mean when we say that God is the Creator of heaven and earth? Egypt's Coptic Christian population has often had a difficult relationship with the country's Muslim majority, and human rights groups estimate that several thousand Copts may have left the country since the 2011 revolution. Video at link.

Students at University of Missouri don't need to cram for exams that fall on Wiccan and Pagan holidays, now that the school has put them on par with Christmas, Thanksgiving and Hanukah. The university’s latest “Guide to Religions: Major Holidays and Suggested Accommodations” — designed to help faculty know when and when not to schedule exams and other student activities — lists eight Wiccan and Pagan holidays and events right alongside more mainstream occasions. It's all part of the school's effort to include everyone's beliefs, although some critics say listing every holiday associated with fringe belief systems is a bit...

John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Your heart must not be troubled or fearful. . . . 2 Thessalonians 3:16 May the Lord of peace Himself give you peace always in every way. The Lord be with all of you.

Pope Benedict XVI has allegedly applied to the President of the Republic of Italy for immunity from arrest and prosecution following a diplomatic statement of intent to issue an arrest warrant for him. Apparently an unidentified EU country wants to prosecute him for various charges related to ongoing child abuse scandals.

Teach me your way, O LORD; lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors. Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes, for false witnesses rise up against me, breathing out violence. I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD. (Psalm 27:11-14)

The media silly season prior to a conclave may have just reached its peak. The media has been giving all kinds of silly advice to the cardinal-electors and the future pontiff, but E.J. Dionne's idiocy takes the cake. In giving up the papacy, Pope Benedict XVI was brave and bold. He did the unexpected for the good of the Catholic Church. And when it selects a new pope next month, the College of Cardinals should be equally brave and bold. It is time to elect a nun as the next pontiff. ... A sister as pope could also resolve what...

When I began Mass today, I wasn't going to offer a homily. It's not required for daily Mass (but is encouraged); it's good for folks to have some silence to reflect on the Scriptures and on the prayers of Mass; and many people at daily Mass have to get back to work--so I try to keep things moving, yet reverent. But as I listened to the readings, a point came to mind that I decided to share. It occurred to me that what our Lord told people to do, in the Gospel, is directly the opposite to what the so-called...

Hell’s Bible has a piece about one way some people are trying to “revitalize†the Catholic Church in Brazil. Rather, this is how Hell’s Bible and those who work for the enemy against the Church want the Church to try to revitalize the faith. Such a path would enervate the Church, not revitalize her. A Laboratory for Revitalizing CatholicismRIO DE JANEIRO — At one new megachurch in São Paulo, a Roman Catholic priest who was a personal trainer before joining the clergy energetically belts out songs, rock-star style, before 25,000 worshipers. Other Brazilian priests are donning cowboy hats and crooning...

In the past few years, the number of affiliated student secular organizations has increased more than threefold This month at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a select group of students will show their humanitarian spirit by participating in the Bleedin’ Heathens Blood Drive. On February 12, they will eat cake to celebrate Darwin Day, and earlier this year, they performed “de-baptism” ceremonies to celebrate Blasphemy Day, attended a War on Christmas Party, and set up Hug An Atheist and Ask An Atheist booths in the campus quad. These activities and more are organized by the Illini Secular Student Alliance...

The very notion that His Holiness, The Pope, way over there in Rome (Vatican) would ask me anything at all is of course, somewhat ludicrous and highly unlikey, to say the least. That is my initial disclaimer and statement of humility before I even start my excercise of answering questions I have not been seriously asked. Still, in the privacy of my home, I hold opinions, and by the miracle of this internet connection, I can speak to you by the press of a button. So, with that said, let's talk for a bit. Anyone could hold a valid point...

After finally watching Survivor for the first time, beginning with Season 20 - Heroes vs. Villains, I became an instant fan. Since then, I have watched every episode of every season - and they're about to begin Season 26. In between seasons, I have been trying to play catch-up. I have seen Seasons 1-3 and 9-13, and I've loved every minute. Sure, it's reasonable to ask whether it is an appropriate thing for a practicing Catholic to watch. The players aren't dressed modestly, though that's to be expected since it often takes place in the tropics, and in all...
