CINCINNATI — A Jesus portrait that has hung in a southern Ohio school district since 1947 was taken down Wednesday, because of concerns about the potential costs of a federal lawsuit against its display. The superintendent of Jackson City Schools said the decision was made after the district’s insurance company declined to cover litigation expenses. He said the faculty adviser and two student members of the Hi-Y Club, a Christian-based service club that the school says owns the portrait, took it down at his direction. “At the end of the day, we just couldn’t roll the dice with taxpayer money,”...

SPEND $500 on two magnums of Veuve Clicquot Champagne at Bagatelle on West 13th Street in the meatpacking district, and the bottles are delivered to your table with lighted sparklers stuck in their corks. Spend $2,500 on a jeroboam of Veuve Clicquot and some magnums of Dom Pérignon, and the lights dim, the D.J. cues up the theme from “Superman,” and a waiter is hoisted onto the shoulders of his fellow servers. With a tablecloth knotted around his neck as a makeshift cape and his arms outstretched, he carries one of the blazing bottles of bubbly to your table. As...

(IsraelNN.com) The IDF, on orders from the Olmert government, removed 10 manned checkpoints in the Binyamin region and Samaria Thursday evening. The roadblocks were taken down near Ramallah, Shechem, Tal Karem and Kalkilya. Officials explained that the roadblocks were removed as part of a series of “goodwill gestures” to the Palestinian Authority. Ostensibly under US pressure, Israel recently agreed to remove dozens of checkpoints and roadblocks in Judea and Samaria in order to make travel easier for local Arabs. In return, the PA said it would try to stop terrorism. Daily attacks continue on roads in Judea and Samaria –...

Nuclear Submarine Commander Removed Friday October 26, 2007 3:16 AM By CHELSEA J. CARTER Associated Press Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) - The commanding officer of the nuclear-powered submarine USS Hampton was relieved of his duty Thursday because of a loss of confidence in his leadership, the Navy said. Cmdr. Michael B. A federal judge was removed from a discrimination case against the U.S. Navy by an appellate court that said he committed five abuses of discretion, including preventing an expert witness from testifying. Los Angeles-based Judge Manuel Real was sitting in Hawaii as a visiting judge when he was reassigned by the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco. Real has appealed the decision to the Judicial Conference of the U.S. in Washington. He had been hearing a case involving Ronald L. Obrey Jr., a Pearl Harbor shipyard supervisor who contends he was denied promotion because he is part...

WASHINGTON - Federal Judge Royce Lamberth has long been known for speaking his mind — most notably in rulings siding with American Indians in their battle with the government over their trust funds. But Lamberth went a step too far, an appeals court said Tuesday, citing one particularly harsh decision last July in which he accused the government of racism. In a rare move, a panel of judges from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ordered Lamberth removed from the 10-year-old Indian trust case, saying he had lost his objectivity. "We conclude, reluctantly, that this...

Now marriage out of order Jan 11 2006 By Ashley Rogers The word 'marriage' is to be taken off register office signs in case it offends gay couples turning up for civil partnership ceremonies. Councils in the West Midlands are being recommended to remove references to marriage suites at register offices after the introduction of the new partnerships last month. Government body LACORS (the Local Authorities Coordinators of Regulatory Services) has issued a Civil Partnership checklist. * Tell us your view on this story. Our Last Christmas in America I, after much research, have come to know hundreds upon hundreds of unborn children of American Citizens are banished, exiled, removed from the soil of these United States each and every year. It is disheartening to know so-called "pro-life" and "pro-family" groups and organizations are in either overt or covert support of the exiling of unborn children of United States Citizens. "Why, why your care, why your concern, about these unborn children" you ask? I am a natural born citizen of the United States. My wife came to the United States as in immigrant by...

Nearly four years have elapsed since the Oslo process (1993-2000) between Israelis and Palestinians foundered in bloodshed. Over that period, two U.S. administrations have tried to forge policies that would reduce the violence and point toward a solution to the conflict. It has not been a single-minded pursuit. Since September 11, 2001, the prime focus of Washington has been the management of unprecedented U.S. military interventions in the region, which removed regimes from power in Afghanistan and Iraq. The notion of Israeli-Palestinian peace as the key to regional stability has been replaced by the war on terror and the insistence on...

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A judge who forced his employees to work on his re-election campaign and then lied about it was thrown off the bench Tuesday by the Louisiana Supreme Court. In a 7-0 decision, the high court removed State District Judge C. Hunter King of Orleans Parish from office and barred him from running for a judicial office for at least five years. The court said King's campaign misconduct and lying were "so prejudicial to the administration of justice, not only in his section of court, but throughout the judicial system, that he cannot be allowed to remain...
