Noya Deats' routine walk along the Roza Canal turned disastrous Wednesday when her two dogs, Fawn and Nia, decided to take a swim. ... But once in the water, neither dog could get out because of the swift current. Unsure what to do, Deats ran alongside the canal to keep up with them while she called her husband, Matt, and the police. ... After watching the deputy struggle to rope the dogs, he [farm laborer Jesus Villanueva] took the lasso and said: "Let me see." ... Seconds later, he lassoed each dog in rapid succession, pulling them to safety.

An apparently suicidal man waded into San Francisco Bay on Monday, stood up to his neck, and waited. As the man drowned, police, fire crews, and others watched idly from the shore. Why? Officials blamed a departmental policy, stemming from budget cuts, that prevented them from jumping in to save him. Fifty-year-old Raymond Zack spent nearly an hour in the water before drowning. A crowd of about 75 people, in addition to first responders, watched from the beach in Alameda across the bay from San Francisco as Zack inched farther and farther away, sometimes glancing back, a witness told the...

Accolades for the good Samaritan who rescued an abducted girl continued to roll in Thursday as California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger called Victor Perez a "true action hero." The city of Fresno proclaimed the day "Victor Perez Day" and sponsored the visit from Schwarzenegger, who said the abduction of the girl, 8, "had a great and heroic end." Early Tuesday, Perez, 29, chased after a vehicle carrying the girl, who had been sexually assaulted hours earlier. "Thank you for stepping in and never even thinking twice," Mayor Ashley Swearengin told Perez, a father of two boys. Perez has been on a...

Look Ma! We fished out a MiG pilot NARESH JANA Kanaidangar, Sept. 24: To brothers Subhas and Ashok Pandit, it had at first looked like a man at the end of a giant balloon, slowly dropping off the morning sky. The two middle-aged farmers had earlier heard the roar of a jet aircraft as they breakfasted on puffed rice at their home by the Keleghai river in this East Midnapore hamlet, about 150km from Calcutta. It took a moment for them to realise what had happened. “Some women who were washing utensils at a nearby pond cried out that a...

Military choppers are on standby to swoop into the heliport. Motorcycle police are on alert to escort a fleet of ambulances. "We've been ready since Day One of this disaster," said Hernan Rojas, director of Copiapo Regional Hospital. "We expected injured miners to...

LACONIA – A Manchester teen who nearly drowned in the Winnipesaukee River this summer returned yesterday to thank a Laconia police officer and other first responders for diving in and pulling her lifeless body from the murky bottom. It was a joyful reunion for Rama Kanu, 19, of 75 O'Malley St., who came with family to thank her heroes in person. "Thank you," the petite teenager said softly as she hugged Sgt. Al Lessard and two other officers. "You are a hero," said her tearful mother, Zainab Kanu, who brought flowers to the police station. They offered thanks to Sgt....

MOSS POINT, Mississippi (WALA) - A Moss Point police officer is being hailed as a hero after saving a Theodore man in a sinking car. Luck never falls on a schedule, but sometimes it falls upon the right person at just the right time. On Thursday, Corporal Frederick Gaston was watching a football game at work, when he left to pick up some burgers. While driving down the interstate, he heard a call about an accident on I-10. "I figured since I was a lot closer to the accident site, I would respond to it," Gaston said. When the officer...
