Full title: Protesters set off explosives, throw bricks after police officer shoots, kills 18-year-old in Missouri Hundreds of people gathered at a suburban St. Louis gas station early Wednesday morning after a police officer shot and killed an 18-year-old man who had been pointing a 9 mm handgun at the officer, authorities said. Some protesters among the angry crowd of between 200 and 300 turned violent early Wednesday morning, setting off explosive devices and throwing bricks and rocks, St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said at a press conference. More than 50 police officers, some in riot gear, responded,...

During Saturday´s protests about the lack of indictments in the cases of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, CUNY adjunct professor and creator of erotic poetry Eric Linsker picked up a trashcan and tried to throw it at police officers. Two police lieutenants were attacked by the crowd when the officers tried to arrest Linsker. Newsday described the incident: They were on the roadway of the [Brooklyn] bridge about 8 p.m. when they heard reports of "debris being thrown on the walkway" at police officers who were walking alongside demonstrators involved in Saturday´s New York City rally against police shootings of...

If you’ve been watching the news lately, you’d think that Berkeley is the national hub for anarchism. You can see photos of ski-masked anarchists all over the place. Masked bandits are breaking windows, starting bonfires, and robbing and looting banks, stores, restaurants, and the like. (1)But there is one problem with this narrative. There aren’t any anarchists in Berkeley. OK, maybe there are a few UC Berkeley professors who call themselves anarchists. But while they talk the talk, they don’t walk the walk. This elite group only gets their hands dirty when they are in their leafy backyards, composting. But after...

A New York City grand jury has declined to indict an NYPD officer in the chokehold case of Eric Garner, the unarmed man who died while being arrested on Staten Island earlier this year. In opting not to indict, the panel determined there was not probable cause that a crime was committed by NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo, who was seen on a widely watched amateur video showing him wrapping his arm around Garner's neck as Garner yelled, "I can't breathe!" during the summer altercation.

Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan went on a fiery tirade about Ferguson on Saturday — threatening that if the demands of protesters aren’t met, “we’ll tear this goddamn country apart!” Farrakhan stated in his speech — given at Morgan State University, a black college located in Baltimore, Md. — that violence was justified in response to the decision not to indict officer Darren Wilson and peaceful protests are only in the interest of “white folks.” “We going to die anyway. Let’s die for something,” the radical figure told the crowd to roaring applause. He even said the parents of...

One person was killed in Cairo on Saturday night, in clashes that erupted after an Egyptian court dismissed a murder charge against former President Hosni Mubarak over the deaths of protesters during the 2011 uprising. The ruling enraged Mubarak’s opponents, with about 1,000 converging on a central Cairo square to denounce the government, according to the AFP news agency. A health ministry official said one person was shot dead after police fired tear gas to disperse the protesters, resulting in scattered clashes. Police arrested at least 100 protesters. A march for racial justice Friday night turned ugly as hundreds of protesters converged on Union Square and frightened crowds of shoppers by smashing windows and attacking police. Shopkeepers lowered metal gates to protect their entries while shoppers with children dashed inside the giant Macy’s store and cowered behind locked doors. Some protesters broke shop windows and screamed at police, while others threw objects including bottles at officers. Several families ran from the protest area while hundreds crowded behind police lines at Union Square’s ice rink. An activist spray painted “F T P” (F—The Police) on an Apple Store, watched...

The violent protests in Ferguson, Mo., are part of the American experience. Peaceful protesting is a luxury only available to those safely in mainstream culture. When a police officer shoots a young, unarmed black man in the streets, then does not face indictment, anger in the community is inevitable. It’s what we do with that anger that counts. In such a case, is rioting so wrong?

"If you don't want to get shot, tased, pepper-sprayed, struck with a baton or thrown to the ground," warns Officer Sunil Dutta of the Los Angeles Police Department, "just do what I tell you." The thing is, Officer Dutta (pictured) is also an Adjunct Professor of Homeland Security and Criminal Justice at Colorado Technical University. And he uttered those words not in the heat of the moment, but in an opinion piece in the Washington Post responding to widespread criticism of police attitudes and tactics currently on display in Ferguson, Missouri, but increasingly common nationwide. Dutta continues: Don't argue with...

WASHINGTON (AP) — When racial tensions erupted midway through his first presidential campaign, Barack Obama came to Philadelphia to decry the "racial stalemate we've been stuck in for years." Over time, he said, such wounds, rooted in America's painful history on race, can be healed. Six years later, the stalemate suddenly seems more entrenched than ever. As Obama pleads for calm and understanding in Ferguson, Missouri, he's struggling to determine what role — if any — the nation's first black president can play in defusing a crisis that has laid bare the profound sense of injustice felt by African-Americans across...

The station reported it was about 1 a.m. when four men, masked and carrying shotguns, approached a crowd. The report said when police arrived they heard shots fired and saw...

The Missouri Governor Jay Nixon gave "no heads up" to the White House before deploying The National Guard and has now made another abrupt decision as The National Guard closes in on Ferguson: *NIXON'S CALL TO HALT CURFEW TONIGHT MADE IN E-MAILED STATEMENT We presume when there are military tanks rolling through the streets of a town, there is no need for the actual implementation of a curfew... This once again rubs the administration's nose in it as AG Holder's comments from last week hang in the air: "get those damned tanks out of there." The neighborhood has been under...
