Simon: Jindal as VP Pick Would Hurt McCain With Racist Voters

If we're going to promote a candid discussion of race in our country, we can't jump down the throat of everyone who ventures onto the racial minefield. Rather than finding offense in Roger Simon's suggestion that choosing Bobby Jindal as his VP candidate would hurt John McCain among racist voters, I propose we simply analyze it. Here's what Simon said on this evening's Hardball, as guest host Mike Barnicle led the Politico reporter and Newsweek's Howard Fineman through a tour d'horizon of possible VP picks. MIKE BARNICLE: Interesting new Republican face, Bobby Jindal, Governor of Louisiana. ROGER SIMON: Interesting. Young....

So Dangerous, Bill Sent . . . Chelsea?

Hardball had some fun at Hillary's expense this evening over the mystery of The Sniper Who Didn't Fire. Credit Politico's Roger Simon with making the panel's most devastating remark. Hillary's Heminwayesque claim has been that "we used to say in the White House that if a place is too dangerous, too small or too poor, send the First Lady." Chatting with host Chris Matthews, Bloomberg's Margaret Carlson, and Perry Bacon of WaPo, Simon observed what in retrospect might be obvious but something I hadn't previously heard anyone else remark. ROGER SIMON: She says I was there because it was too...

Fred: 'We Don't Wear Any Hats, Unless They're Our Own.'

Confederate Yankee catches Roger Simon of the Politico making a Fred Thompson visit to an Iowa firehouse sound like it went much worse than it did. Simon describes Thompson's "sour expression" on his face, and suggests that Thompson offended the firefighters when he mentioned his "silly hat" rule. CBS News - you know CBS News, that longtime friend of bloggers - offers video, that shows a lot of laughter and good spirits all around. Come on, man. Thompson apparently makes a reference to this botched story in his latest little video from the road: "Remember, we don't raise our hands...

Bias? More Doubts Raised About The Politico's Thompson Article

In this long election cycle, we may be learning as much about media bias as about the candidates. PJM’s Bob Owens has more on the questionable characterization of Fred Thompson by The Politico’s Roger Simon. Fire Chief Dan McKenzie cast more doubts on The Politico’s chief political correspondent Roger Simon’s version of events at McKenzie’s Waverly, Iowa fire station in Simon’s article “Fred Thompson: Lazy as charged.” Questions had been raised about Simon’s article based on a video of Thompson’s appearance, which seemed to show the candidate behaving in a radically different manner from the one described by The Politico...

Roger Simon's Hit-Job On Fred Thompson At The Politico

I thought I'd said all I was going to say about Roger Simon's article in The Politico yesterday afternoon in the comments at Hot Air, but as more comes out about the article, I think it is worthy of a dedicated post. Simon (not the Roger L.Simon of Pajamas Media with whom I interviewed Fred Thompson in November) put up a post called Fred Thompson: Lazy as charged (bad link earlier, now fixed -ed). The article was damning—brutal, even—and highlighted what appeared to be a huge gaffe in his bus tour through Waverly, Iowa: ...Thompson rode four blocks to the...

Roger Simon not telling the truth about Fred Thompson

Roger Simon went up with an article about Fred Thompson yesterday subtitled "Lazy as Charged." Simon wrote the article after following Fred around for a few hours. Those few hours included a closed-door meeting with an unabashedly anti-Fred newspaper editor and a visit to a small fire department. Simon, whose feelings were apparently hurt when he was shut out of the meeting at the newspaper, filed this report afterward. The article was front page material yesterday, but was really hard to find by this morning. It could have something to do with the avalanche of criticism the article has received...

Who Is This Article About?

Check out these opening paragraphs, and guess who's being described. Looking into [his] eyes is like falling into a swimming pool. His eyes are deep and blue and comforting and, as person after person will tell you, when his eyes lock onto yours, you feel like you are the only other person in the world. Margarida Perreira, 48 . . . can stand it no longer. “Can I give you a kiss?” she asks him. “Sure you can,” he says. She hugs him fiercely.
Missing the Mark on McCain: Politico's Simon Calls for Return of 'Reformer'

Let's play a quick game of word association. I say "John McCain" and "reform." You say . . . I'm guessing . . . "campaign finance" or perhaps "McCain-Feingold." Am I right? And what's one of the biggest beefs that Republicans in general, and Republican primary-voting types in particular have with McCain? Correctamundo: his championing of campaign finance reform, which Republicans tend to oppose on philosophical grounds [unconconstitutional restriction of free speech] and pragmatic political ones [increases the power of the Dem-friendly MSM]. If further evidence were needed that it's hard for MSMers to understand Republicans, I refer you...

Roger Simon of U.S. News: "Nobody Died When Bill Clinton Lied"

And he wouldn't "trust" any of the nine Democratic presidential candidates with governing during "that crucial period," he said. "This Democrat will vote for President Bush in 2004." " LIFE-LONG LIBERAL, ROGER L. SIMON, ENDORSES BUSH - "I remember the day, and it wasn't so long ago, that liberals like me were attacking our government for supporting dictators. Now these new "liberals," or whatever they want to call themselves, attack...
