Early this afternoon, the House defeated a $700 billion bailout of the financial markets, dealing a major blow to the Bush Administration’s plan to stop the hemorrhaging of Wall Street institutions. The plan failed on a 228-205 vote. Republicans voted 65-133 against the bailout, while Democrats voted 140-95 to pass it. It was a major victory for House Conservatives of the Republican Study Committee, led by Chairman Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas), former chairman Mike Pence (R-Ind.) and other floor fighters such as Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) and Jeff Flake (R-Ariz).

Delegates to the Democratic National Convention are casting ballots for the party's presidential nominee at their hotels this morning. The vote, negotiated by the campaigns for presumptive nominee Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton, is expected to speed proceedings from the floor of the Pepsi Center tonight, when totals will be read from the floor as part of a roll call vote. But it is also leaving many delegates perplexed. Some delegates were confused because Sen. Clinton was not expected to release her delegates until the afternoon. "It doesn't make any sense to me," said Mary Sullivan, a Clinton delegate...

DENVER, (AP) -- Less than an hour before the Democratic convention calls the roll of the states, Hillary Rodham Clinton began an emotional gathering with her delegates Wednesday by telling them she was releasing them as delegates to vote for Barack Obama. Many in the crowded ballroom yelled back "No!" Clinton told her delegates she's not telling them what to do, adding: "You've come here from so many different places, having made this journey and feeling in your heart what is right for you to do." Clinton told her loyal followers: "I want you to know that this has been...

Supporters of Hillary Rodham Clinton are furiously circulating petitions on the floor of the Democratic National Convention tonight, hoping to stave off a plan to hold the convention's roll call at breakfast Wednesday — out of the public eye — sources inside the delegations say. The move being worked out between the Obama campaign and officials behind Clinton's suspended bid, would work in two parts: Delegates would cast votes at their hotels Wednesday morning; that night, at the Pepsi Center convention site, the roll-call process would rely on the votes cast that morning, the delegates said.

Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama agreed Monday to limit a divisive roll call for president, giving delegates a brief but historic choice between a black man and white woman. The deal would allow some states to cast votes for both Obama and Clinton... ...both senators have an incentive to help make peace between their opposing sides — Obama so he'll have their backing in November and Clinton so she'll be well positioned for a future run. ..."There's a moment that you want to enjoy your bitterness," [Townsend] said. ...they were still struggling to solve the mechanics of honoring Clinton...

What was it I was saying earlier about her phony “lift every voice” enfranchisement rhetoric? Oh well. Nothing says unity and catharsis like a vote that has to be suspended halfway through lest the margin of victory not turn out the way The One has foreordained. Chicago politics fever — catch it! " Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama are working on a deal to give her some votes in the roll call for the Democratic presidential nomination, but quickly end the divided balloting in unanimous consent for Obama. Idaho Statesman reporter Dan Popkey is all over the news this week, following publication of his long-awaited outing piece on Sen. Larry Craig. Roll Call beat the Idaho paper to the punch with its report earlier this week on Craig’s arrest and guilty plea stemming from the now infamous restroom incident. But Popkey had spent months investigating the rumors of Craig’s homosexuality, which date back to at least 1982. In December, Popkey visited me at my Blade office in D.C. to ask whether I knew anything about Craig’s sexual orientation. We spent about an hour talking about his assignment, which...

WASHINGTON - The White House emphatically renewed President' Bush's threat to veto a bill heading toward Senate passage that would authorize federal funding for embryonic stem cell research, a practice Bush loathes. "If (the bill) were presented to the president, he would veto the bill," read a fresh official statement of administration policy Monday, with the sentence underlined for emphasis.
