McCain Campaign May Have Accepted In-Kind Contribution from Foreign Nationals in Contravention of Federal Election Laws Contact: Press Office 202-646-5188 Washington, D.C. Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, announced today that it filed a formal complaint, dated April 22, 2008, with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) related to a fundraising luncheon held at London’s Spencer House to benefit Senator John McCain’s presidential campaign. The venue for the event was apparently donated to the campaign by foreign nationals, in violation of federal campaign finance laws. “Recent news reports suggest that Sen. John McCain and John...

A US campaign watchdog has accused presumptive Republican president nominee John McCain of violating election laws by accepting campaign contributions from two prominent Londoners. At issue is a fundraising luncheon held in March at London's Spencer House, during McCain's swing through the United Kingdom. An invitation to the event lists Lord Rothschild and Nathaniel Rothschild as hosts, and indicates the event was made possible with their "kind permission". Judicial Watch, a Washington organisation instrumental in the March release of Hillary Clinton's White House schedules, has asked US election monitors to investigate whether the Rothschilds improperly sponsored the fundraiser. US political...

Sen. John McCain and his staff have been adamant for days that his upcoming overseas trip to Britain, France and Israel is not political. /snip ...Apparently, though, there will still be room for fundraising. McCain's campaign has sent out an invitation for a March 20 luncheon at Spencer House -- the neo-classical home built for an ancestor of Diana, the late Princess of Wales -- "by kind permission of Lord Rothschild OM GBE and the Hon. Nathaniel Rothschild." The price to attend is $1000 to $2,300. And the dress code for the event? "Lounge suits" -- British for business...

WASHINGTON—Senator John McCain has been averaging a fund-raiser a day in America’s pockets of affluence – hotel ballrooms in New York, Atlanta, Chicago – but now he will expand his pursuit of campaign donations at a $1,000-a-plate lunch at the 18th century Spencer House in London. The transatlantic fund-raiser, to be held March 20 at the home built by the first Earl Spencer, an ancestor of Diana, the late Princess of Wales, comes at the end of a foreign trip that Mr. McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, has repeatedly said is not political. Mr. McCain is to travel...

London - Dame Miriam Rothschild, a self-taught scientist whose highly technical studies of parasites earned her the title "Queen of the Fleas", has died at the age of 96, her family said. Her magnum opus...

"Before George W. Bush came along, I thought Reagan was the worst preseident in U.S. history, with his illegal wars in Central America that cost tens of thousands of lives....He set in motion the kind of reactionary government that we have today." "There is no reason to indulge in sappy distortions because the guy died. He was a man who did great harm while in office and we should face that fact." Matt Rothschild, editor of The Progressive magazine The Progressive Magazine is published in Madison, Wisconsin.

Official: Kerry failed to act on pre-9/11 tip 3rd agent to say he warned security lapses made Boston airport ripe for 'jihad' attack WASHINGTON - A third federal aviation-security agent, one still with the government, has stepped forward to say he also warned Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry about security lapses at Boston's Logan International Airport before the 9/11 hijackings there. Earlier this week, two former FAA agents said the Democratic presidential hopeful failed to take effective action after they gave him a prophetic warning that his home airport was vulnerable to multiple hijackings. Brian Sullivan, a retired special agent from...

When the compact figure of Vladimir Putin strode onto the world stage after his success in the 2000 presidential elections, a tremor of anxiety passed through the collective body of Western leaders. Gone was the boozy, bumbling, free-wheeling Boris Yeltsin, clown-prince of post-Soviet Russia who had unaccountably found himself in the box seat at the historic moment when his country was rolling up the Communist empire. The new leader of the new Russia was his polar opposite. A former KGB colonel, Putin was the identikit Soviet-style apparatchik: hard-eyed, unsmiling, tightly disciplined. And he had a black-belt in judo to prove...

Will Baron Rothschild give shares to President Putin? It seems that the main problem is solved: oil oligarch, head of Yukos Mikhail Khodorkovsky is waiting for his attorney in a cosy chamber meant for four prisoners of the detention center #4. But according to the Russian tradition, as soon as people do something they start thinking why it has been done. As it turns out, this aspect of the problem has not been considered yet. The Russian mass media report that for fear to lose the control over Yukos, Russia's largest and one of the world largest oil companies, the...

Boxes Stolen From Rothschild Collection LONDON - Burglars have stolen more than 100 gold boxes and other valuable items from the Rothschild Collection of art at Waddesdon Manor in southern England. "This is a very serious loss," Lord Rothschild said Wednesday. "Waddesdon encapsulates generations of Rothschild collecting, and the gold boxes at Waddesdon are among the finest in the world." Neither the police nor Waddesdon would indicate the value of the stolen art. Thames Valley Police said as many as five men, driving a blue van, are believed to have broken into the manor early Tuesday. The stately home, built...

Rothschild Evelyn's dauphin Feb 13th 2003 From The Economist print edition As Lazard prepares for a sale, can Rothschild remain independent? Sir Evelyn's old-fashioned image BEFORE he joined Lazard, Bruce Wasserstein talked to Rothschild, another family-owned bank, about buying a stake and running its investment-banking business. But the family did not warm to the forceful American. Lazard's gain and Rothschild's loss? Perhaps. Sir Evelyn de Rothschild, chairman of N.M. Rothschild & Sons, the London end of the family firm, and a former chairman of The Economist, did not want to let an American merger specialist run, and possibly sell,...

Web Exclusives Editor Matthew Rothschild comments on the news of the day.October 4, 2002 Bush's ObscenityOn October 3, Bush uttered one of the grossest obscenities imaginable: "War may be unavoidable." War is almost always avoidable. In the case of Iraq, it is particularly avoidable, since Iraq has not attacked the United States and is in no position to do so. It's only "unavoidable" because Bush so desperately wants to go to war. Bush, not Saddam Hussein, is blocking the U.N. inspectors from going back to work. And Bush and Blair are insisting that U.N. Security Council let the war begin....
