Currently I have a Netgear WNR3500Lv2 router. It's a combo wired and wireless router. It is hooked up to a DLink Modem, Model DCM-301. However, last month lightning struck right behind my place and it killed one of the ethernet ports on the router. Thank God the entire thing wasn't fried. This is my use case--maintaining the Wifi connection as I move around the yard (1.2 acres). On May 25, the FBI warned that anyone who uses a router to connect to the internet should reboot their routers. The warning comes amid a Russian malware (malicious software) called VPNFilter that can secretly install itself onto internet routers and collect data from an unsuspecting user. I recently installed a Netgear Nighthawk X6 router. I've replaced the default passwords with 10 digit, random, unrelated characters. Two of my devices (a desktop and a laptop) are running Avast free virus protection. When I run an Avast scan, it says Service is vulnerable to attacks from within your network. I bought and hooked-up a Linksys E-1200 wifi router ($30) 2 1/2 years ago and everything worked fine.I only needed it for my home ASUS laptop but since have added a wireless printer, Wii U gaming system and Sling TV with ROKU stick, all which work off the router.Lately I'll just all of a sudden lose wifi signal. I am relocating and will be using TWC cable internet for the first time. I'm seeking recommendations for single unit Modem/Router - esp the best "Bang for the Buck" TWC does recommend Netgear N300 and N600 - both offer 300mbs speed. A security researcher in the US has said his Netgear router was hacked after attackers exploited a flaw in the machine. I have a client that has 2 ISP's, Frontier and Mediacom and is running POS/Credit Card machines through the Frontier service primarily, however Frontier goes out from time to time so they would like to be able to switch to the Mediacom service easily and quickly during those down times.
