SPINGFIELD, Ill. -- In the October 2007 general conference, Relief Society General President Julie B. Beck gave a talk titled "Mothers Who Know." An unprecedented online reaction followed. Even during her talk bloggers began commenting on and analyzing her statements. In the coming days and weeks, this reaction would grow, peaking in an online document titled "What Women Know." BYU-Idaho history professor Andrea Radke-Moss examined this online reaction in her presentation "Blogging over Beck: LDS Women's Online Responses to Julie B. Beck's 'Mothers Who Know' Talk" Friday afternoon at the Mormon History Association conference in Springfield, Ill. Through her research,...

The "thumpin'" that the Republican Party received last week will make profound changes in policymaking in Washington and in presidential politics. On the policy side, we have already seen something in the nature of parliamentary government: Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld lacked the confidence of the new congressional majority and promptly resigned. George W. Bush and Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi both expressed a hitherto indiscernible desire to work together, either out of conviction or out of calculation that it was in their interest to do so. Democrats, having won a small majority in the House and a paper-thin one in the Senate,...

WASHINGTON -- Even the most partisan Democrats have said all year they expected their 6- to 10-point advantage over the Republicans in the party-preference polls to tighten as Election Day neared. But certainly no one expected the midterm congressional elections to tighten as much as they have so early in the general election cycle. Earlier this month, the Gallup Poll reported a 4- to 6-point advantage for the Democrats, which fell to 2 to 3 points, and is now down to a "dead heat" among likely voters who say they will vote Republican (48 percent) and those who say they...

In the Stalin era, Communist Party members perceived as impure — deviationists — were variously read out of the party, decreed forgotten by diktat, rubbed out of photographs, sentenced to forever in the gulag, or shot. These days, ideological purists in the Democratic Party are flattened by the big ol’ leftie steamroller. That’s what happened Tuesday to Joe Lieberman — the Connecticut Democratic senator who was Al Gore’s vice-presidential running mate six years ago. Lieberman’s defeat in the Democratic primary is viewed broadly as indicative of how President Bush and the Long War on Terror will play in the congressional...

With even the Arab League blaming Hezbollah and Hamas for the violence in the Middle East, it seems the terrorist organizations' last bastions of support are Iran, Syria — and parts of California. Left-wing protesters chanting their support for the two groups in front of the Israeli consulate in San Francisco had to be separated from pro-Israel demonstrators by police the other day. Many protesters waved Palestinian flags, while...

Judge gives Limbaugh medical records to investigators By JILL BARTON Associated Press Writer July 06, 2005 5:42PM A judge Wednesday gave some of Rush Limbaugh's medical records to prosecutors, allowing their long-stalled investigation into whether the conservative commentator illegally purchased painkillers to move forward. Circuit Court Judge Thomas Barkdull III also returned some of Limbaugh's records to his attorney, Roy Black. Black had argued that the judge should limit the records prosecutors can review because they contain privileged, even embarrassing, details about medical procedures, symptoms and other issues that were unrelated to the criminal investigation. After a hearing on Wednesday,...

Judge Returns Records to Rush Limbaugh In an apparent legal victory for top talk radio host Rush Limbaugh, Florida Circuit Judge Thomas Barkdull has returned most of his medical records to his attorney, Roy Black - thereby denying prosecutors "free rein" over Limbaugh's medical file.

Circuit Judge Thomas Barkdull III ruled Tuesday that he will not restrict the number of investigators who will see the released portions of Rush Limbaugh's medical records. Investigators may have access to those records in the next few days. In a Tuesday court hearing, Barkdull said he will complete his review of the records this week. Investigators seized medical records from three of Limbaugh's Palm Beach County doctors and one Los Angeles doctor in late 2003. Barkdull will decide which records fall within the scope of search warrants used to seize the records and will give those portions to prosecutors...

WEST PALM BEACH -- A Palm Beach County judge ruled Friday that he will review Rush Limbaugh's medical records in private to determine which of them will be turned over to prosecutors investigating the conservative radio host's prescription drug use. [snip]During that hearing, Assistant State Attorney James Martz told Barkdull that the records could show that the conservative radio host engaged in doctor shopping -- secretly obtaining overlapping prescriptions from different doctors in one month. Limbaugh's attorney, Roy Black, argued that the records should be limited to the time period between March 2003 and September 2003. Prosecutors cited prescriptions Limbaugh...

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT RUSH: Let's go ahead and listen to Senator Durbin again. You need to hear this. We got the audio for this in the final hour of the program yesterday, and just in that period of time – as we always say, "show prep for the rest of the media." It was all over the place last night, websites and all over, people are outraged. Durbin's office is being swamped with phone calls. We had phone calls on this program after the audio aired. People are just livid, and particularly the parents of soldiers serving in the United States,...

Yesterday, ladies and gentlemen, was the latest court hearing on the attempt by the Palm Beach County state attorney to get my medical records, to see what, if anything, might be in there that they could charge me with. They're on a fishing expedition and by their own admission I am guilty and have to prove myself innocent. They have no idea what to charge until they see the medical records and there was a hearing yesterday. What we've done on the website is we've posted the motion that we filed with the court yesterday, and it's a pdf file....

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT RUSH: From the American Thinker - in fact it's one of our favorite websites; by the way it is a blog -- I guess this is Senator Dick Durbin's comments on the Senate floor. "'On one occasion, the air conditioning had been turned down so far and the temperature was so cold in the room, that the barefooted detainee was shaking with cold. ..... On another occasion, the (air conditioner) had been turned off, making the temperature in the unventilated room well over 100 degrees. The detainee was almost unconscious on the floor, with a pile of hair...

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT RUSH: Rich Galen in his Mullings web log today said, "We have to be the dumbest superpower in the history of the planet. The latest example of Liberal intellectual rigor mortis is this business about closing down the prison at Guantanamo Bay because of 'allegations of abuse.'" [Snipped comments about Dittocam problem] Mullings continues, "Senator Biden who wants to ride the Gitmo Train all the way to the White House in 2008, is the senior Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He said on ABC's Sunday show, 'I think we should end up shutting it down, moving...

WEST PALM BEACH -- Rush Limbaugh's attorney asked a judge Wednesday for copies of the conservative commentator's sealed medical records so he can provide a list of privileged information that should not be turned over to prosecutors investigating Limbaugh's drug use.

Prosecutors will have to wait until at least next week before finding out which medical records they may use in pursuing their criminal investigation against Rush Limbaugh. Circuit Judge Jeffrey Winikoff postponed hearing arguments Monday when he did not receive copies of two defense motions even though Limbaugh's attorney Roy Black filed the papers Friday. Winikoff attributed the delay to security procedures put in place after 9/11, requiring paperwork to go through the clerk's office instead of directly to the judge. The hearing is reset for Tuesday. "I think that the court handled this quite properly wanting to read all...

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT RUSH: If we can't even control who is appointed to the Supreme Court when the Republicans have the presidency and the Senate, then we never will. If we can't control who gets on the Supreme Court when we have the White House and the Senate, we never, ever will. Let me ask you this: If the Democrats had the White House and the Democrats controlled the Senate, do you think that they would be surrendering their power for judiciary appointments? Hell no! We are. We are, because of seven renegades, six of whom I can't begin to explain...

New York: In what appears to be a crushing blow, Howard Dean body slammed Rush Limbaugh on Meet The Press, putting Limbaugh in his place and placing the final nail in his coffin. The remarks came Sunday, May 22, 2005, in an hour long interview with Tim Russert. Dean pulled out all the stops, leaving his place in history with such names as Lenin, Marx and Krushchev. In one of his comments to Russert, Dean said, “It is galling to be lectured about moral values by folks who have their own problems. I’m giving them a little taste of their...

The difference between Limbaugh and Moyers is as profound as the difference between FOX and PBS. One man plays by the "rules of the game," the other sticks to principle. One man defends a corrupt status quo, the other seeks to expose it...... Bill Moyers says that journalists have a responsibility to question those in power. Rush Limbaugh, speaking for the economic and political elites that currently occupy positions of authority, responds by charging that Moyers is "insane." A debate has opened regarding the role of reporting in George W. Bush's America. But this debate is about a great deal...

NEW YORK (Talon News) -- Rock music magazine Rolling Stone rejected an ad on Wednesday for a new Bible translation designed to reach "spiritually intrigued 18- to 34-year-olds" because it was deemed too religious. Zondervan, the largest Bible publisher in the United States, was hoping to purchase space in the popular secular magazine to attract their target consumers for the new "Today's New International Version of the Bible," which is due to hit bookstores in February. Doug Lockhart, who serves as the executive vice president of marketing for Zondervan, said he purchased the ad in Rolling Stone last July in...

For two days in October, the John Kerry campaign came to a brief stop at a hotel and conference center on the high-plains sprawl of suburban Denver, where the candidate holed up with his staff and prepared for his second debate with George Bush. While the traveling press idled over endless buffets in one of the hotel dining rooms, Kerry and his closest advisers sequestered themselves behind closed doors, getting ready for the next night's crucial events. The morning's calm was broken when Kerry's press advisers began circulating word that the candidate would soon be making a statement about the...

George W Bush: Punk icon? By Damian Fowler BBC reporter in New York It sounds unlikely, but there is a surprising new subculture emerging in the United States: Republican punk rockers. In his knee-high Dr Martens and with his head shaved, Michale Graves is the Bush-friendly face of punk rock. He is the front man for the band Gotham Road, which has just kicked off its US tour. On stage he belts out angry, obscure lyrics, but offstage he is also known for his conservative rants and raves. "The leftist radical agenda seems to be resonating loudly from within pop...

With his mohawk, ratty fatigues, assorted chains and his menagerie of tattoos — swallows on each shoulder, a nautical star on his back and the logo of the Bouncing Souls, a New York City punk band, on his right leg — 22-year-old Nick Rizzuto is the very picture of counterculture alienation. But it's when he talks politics that Mr. Rizzuto sounds like a real radical, for a punk anyway. Mr. Rizzuto is adamantly in favor of lowering taxes and for school vouchers, and against campaign finance laws; his favorite Supreme Court justice is Clarence Thomas; he plans to vote for...
