I came to faith at the age of eight and to this day I still remember the sacred feeling I had, the incredible conviction with which I felt full of, and the sense of acceptance and forgiveness I felt from God and other Christians. The following Sunday night, partaking of communion, I held the tiny plastic cup of grape juice as a woman might hold her newly received engagement ring with all awe and wonderment. I still pointedly remember looking at the object in my young hand and believing with absolute certainty that all my sins had been washed away....

Faith vs. works.  Christians have debated this topic for two thousand years and still do.  At the heart of the debate you have two (seemingly) opposing sides: Team Faith says works are not required for salvation.  Salvation is received by grace through faith alone (John 6:28-29, Ephesians 2:8-9, Romans 4:5, Romans 11:6, Galatians 2:21).  They believe that making works a requirement for salvation ignores the very message of the Gospel that Jesus died for our sins and rose again (1 Corinthians 15:1-4), which the Apostle Paul calls "of first importance."  This is Christianity 101.  If Jesus died for your...

We lie about Christmas, because the real meaning and message of Christmas makes us confront a frightening truth. Christmas means one thing and one thing only. As C.S. Lewis put it, Christmas is the story of how the rightful king has landed. When Jesus stood before Pilate, just prior to going to his execution, the Roman governor asked Him, Are you the king of the Jews? After some discussion Pilate concluded to Jesus, You are a king, then! Jesus answered him, You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for...

Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?( Genesis 3:1-2)The Angel approached the couple in the garden very calmly, and in an attractive form. Eve, has God really forbidden you to eat of all of the trees of the garden? By exaggerating the prohibition placed upon the couple, the serpent was probing, looking for any indication of a rift between they and God. And the woman said unto the serpent,...

VATICAN CITY, Nov 21 (Reuters) - Pope Francis on Monday extended indefinitely to all Roman Catholic priests the power to forgive abortion, a right previously reserved for bishops or special confessors. Francis, who has made a more inclusive and forgiving Roman Catholic Church a characteristic of his papacy, made the announcement in a document known as an "apostolic letter" after Sunday's close of the Church's "Holy Year of Mercy". He said he wanted to "restate as firmly as I can that abortion is a grave sin, since it puts an end to an innocent life" but "there is no sin...

Why Was Christ Crucified Between Two Thieves? Msgr. Charles Pope • November 20, 2016 • It is good and necessary to ponder more of the Gospel of yesterday’s Solemnity of Christ the King. It remains a profound teaching that Christ was crucified between two thieves. Why?St. Thomas Aquinas proposes three answers to the question. Let’s consider them, with particular emphasis on the third. I. To Identify with Fallen Sinners – St Thomas said, As Christ became accursed of the cross for us, so for our salvation He was crucified as a guilty one among the guilty (Comm. xxxiii in...

It was bittersweet at the election polls yesterday. As an election judge, I was able to overhear comments among the various voters. The overall sentiment was we need to protect our freedoms. . . the turnout more than doubled last years. Several first time and also several young voters. However as I looked at the lines of voters . . .it immediately came to mind that the fields are indeed ripe for the Harvest and the workers are few. Churches cannot remain operating in the "business as usual" mode in these end times. God will use His Church to witness...

Pastor Andy Stanley is defending his approach to preaching amid questions from prominent evangelical leaders who contend his methods undermine the Bible's authority and pave the way for unbelief. In a lengthy article in Outreach magazine on Friday, the pastor of North Point Community Church in Alpharetta, Georgia, responds to his critics and affirms that he believes in biblical inerrancy. What he is doing, he argues, is changing the angle from which he speaks to more effectively engage a post-Christian society, particularly millennials who have left the Church. Controversy arose in light of Stanley's recent sermon series wherein he argued...

In Comfort's many taped evangelism videos he is rarely seen praying with those he encounters and has received many questions from believers who are curious about this particular omission. One commenter posed the question to Comfort on Facebook last Friday: "You often have them at the point of belief but then don't allow them, or encourage them, to confess. What is repentance? Is it turning from sin? Is it not sinning? Is it reforming one's life? Is it getting cleaned up first, before coming to Christ? No word causes greater trepidation and uncertainty among those considering a decision of faith and no word causes greater fear and confusion among those already in the Church. This word has caused me some of the greatest angst in my life, largely because of how I've understood it: turning from sin, reforming my ways, being perfect. Yet I continue to fail. Daily. One quick observation: by labelling a large segment of Americans as "irredeemable," Hillary is denying the redeeming power of God through Jesus Christ. I am not a Christian scholar, but I think that one Christian tenet is that everyone, however vile, is redeemable through Salvation (which is loosely synonymous with redemption). (Please, someone correct me if I am wrong.) Beside the chilling tone of her remark, it strikes me as symptomatic of a Godless worldview. After all, one name for Jesus is "Christ the Redeemer." Hillary seems oblivious to all of this.

I have been in a few face-to-face debates with Muslims, and all of them were polite and respectful. One question from my Muslim friends kept popping up, however: "Why did Jesus have to die on the cross for our sins? If we sin, God just forgives! He does not need for someone to take our place." Muslims have told me that this substitutionary sacrifice is actually very unfair of God. God would never let a righteous man die for the guilty. What did Jesus mean when He uttered the words “It is finished!” in John 19:30? The phrase actually translates one word in Greek, tetelestai, from the root teleo, which means “to finish, fulfill.” Significantly, this specific form of the verb, tetelestai, is only found twice in the entire New Testament, both times in John 19. In fact, the two occurrences of tetelestai are found within three verses of each other: “After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), ‘I thirst.’ . . . When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, ‘It is...

Oh, yes! Now, it is a given that honorable people may disagree about which piece of music is more suitable to reverence the birth of Christ. (I myself prefer Handel’s Messiah to “The Little Drummer Boy.”) And while there are any number of “secular” Christmas songs that ignore Christ altogether, they are just distractions. What I have in mind is a song that, if taken seriously, makes impossible what Christians celebrate at Christmas. I might even call that...

40 Sins that WILL send you to Hell... UNLESS you repent and are saved by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and which is a faith that follows Him. (Jn. 10:27,28) Short summation: Sin is defined in the Bible as the breaking of God's Law. (1Jn. 3:4) God has given us both good things and good laws, which are to our benefit when obeyed. But we have broken God's good laws and misused His good things, to our own hurt and that of others. It is sin which separates man from God (Is. 59:2), who will not dwell with...

  • CHURCH OF CHRIST: Preaching a Plan of Salvation instead of the Man Jesus Christ

For as by one mans disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. (Romans 5:19) I find that when many Church of Christers talk about salvation or being saved, they do not even use or have the correct definition of save, saved or salvation in mind. The terms in Hebrew, Greek and English predominantly means to deliver, to rescue from harm or danger, to deliver from sin, to preserve and protect. These actions come from outside of us. They are not something we do. We are merely recipients. Websters defines salvation as...

With the completion of the Synod on the Family coming next month, Pope Francis has moved to take one item more or less off the table. In the Extraordinary Synod that kicked off the yearlong debate within the Catholic Church on outreach to broken families, a conflict arose around proposals to allow divorced and remarried Catholics to remain in communion regardless of whether they received dispensation to remarry through an annulment. The pontiff issued two changes to the annulment process that may have short-circuited those efforts from the bishops in Germany: ABC Breaking News | Latest News Videos Francis’...

"A law-driver insists with threats and penalties; a preacher of grace lures and incites with divine goodness and compassion shown to us; for He wants no unwilling works and reluctant services, He wants joyful and delightful services of God." - Martin Luther, Father of the Reformation Nowadays it has become popular in the Catholic Church and among many works-righteousness proponents to label stalwart preachers of the Gospel such as Joseph Prince, Tony Evans, Paul Ellis, and even Louie Giglio as "hyper-grace", as if somehow the Bible teaches that there can be too much mercy, too much forgiveness, or too much...

"But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit," - Titus 3:4-5 The Gospel is the ultimate rags-to-riches story. We were pitiful, poor, blind, and naked, deserving death because of our sins, and unable to help ourselves. We felt unloved and in turn were unloving. This bleak existence of dust-to-dust was all there was. And then Jesus came. He revealed to us a loving Daddy in heaven...

Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles? Then I will tell them plainly, I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!" - Matthew 7:21-23 Brothers and sisters, it is seriously time to drop the works-righteousness. Time is so short. When you stand before the Lord don't...
