The United Way of Waco-McLennan County’s decision to cut 83 percent of its funding to The Salvation Army of Waco has left Salvation Army officials scratching their heads and questioning the partnership with the nonprofit going into the new year. The Salvation Army received the largest cut among the 21 local nonprofits the United Way funds. The cuts are part of an ongoing effort to transition from an allocation-based funding model to a grant-based model this year, and a result of a decline in donations in the past five years, United Way Executive Director Barbara Mosacchio said. Mosacchio, who started...

ROSEVILLE (CBS13) — A Salvation Army bell ringer was attacked in front of Walmart for simply spreading holiday cheer. We’ve all heard it; the jingle that means it’s nearly Christmas and ringing in sounds of hope for donations. But not everyone is in the giving spirit. “I greet everybody, 'Merry Christmas,'” said Rev. Jamie Wolfe, Sr. Sadly, those two simple words got this bell ringer knocked out. “He haymakered me, hit me, got me down on the ground and we started wrestling, at that point I’m fighting for my life,” Wolfe Sr. said. The man wasn’t after the kettle money,...

Deep in the heart of Trump country, the Salvation Army’s ubiquitous red kettle is turning into a cauldron of controversy for Sen. George Logan. An Ansonia Republican, Logan’s volunteer work as a bell-ringer outside a Walmart in Naugatuck for the Salvation Army, which is a Christian charity, has drawn opposition from a secularist group. The Freedom From Religion Foundation called on Logan to keep up the separation between church and state. The group wrote to him Tuesday to voice its objections to him ringing the bell outside the big box store twice this week, including an appearance scheduled for Saturday...

Belk has given Salvation Army bell-ringers and their iconic red kettles the heave-ho — just in time for the Christmas season.. The national department store chain will no longer allow Salvation Army volunteers to man kettles outside their stores — a move that is expected to result in a $1 million drop in donations. “It’s a huge impact for us,” Salvation Army Lt. Rob Dolby told the Todd Starnes Show. “Those funds go to operate Christmas programs serving tens of thousands of kids.” Dolby works with the Salvation Army in Anderson, South Carolina. He said the money dropped into those...

The Salvation Army, the American Red Cross and Susan G. Komen on Friday joined a growing exodus of organizations canceling plans to hold fundraising events at the Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, deepening the financial impact to President Trump’s private business amid furor over his comments on Charlottesville. The major exits now mean eight of the club’s biggest event customers have abandoned it this week, likely costing the Trump business hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost revenue or more.

A Christian nursing home in Switzerland must allow assisted suicide or lose its charitable statusA Swiss court has ruled that a Christian nursing home must either permit assisted suicide on its premises or give up its charitable status. The nursing home, which is run by the Salvation Army, the UK-based Christian charity, lost a legal challenge to new assisted suicide rules. The regulations, introduced about a year ago, compel charities caring for the sick and elderly to offer assisted suicide when a patient or resident requests it. The nursing home objected on the grounds that the law violated the core...

Holiday outreach groups like the Salvation Army are in their final stretch of collecting money this season, which is why one Kentucky woman has gotten creative to help boost donations. Judy trained her Dalmation Brandy to ring the bell that goes with the traditional red kettle. She says when she brings her dog along to her spot at the local grocery store, donations nearly double. She hopes to be doing this for many years to come since Brandy is just two years old. Map My News

Greeting warmly a delegation led by General André Cox, the Pope said Catholics and Salvationists, together with other Christians, recognise that those in need have a special place in God’s heart – so much so, that the Lord himself became poor for our sake. As a result, the Pope said, Catholics and Salvationists often meet at the same peripheries of society. I pray, he concluded, that all of Christ’s disciples can contribute with the same conviction and dynamism that the Salvation Army demonstrates in its devoted and highly appreciated service. Founded by former Methodist minister William Booth in 1865 as...

With the attempt to limit the deductibility of contributions to charities by high-earners, the Obama Administration has opened a multi-front attack against the American tradition of “neighbor helping neighbor” and financially successful people turning large portions of their wealth over to charities that improve the American culture in august manners. The governmental power grab competes with the attempts to control the financial sector for its significance and may exceed it in the long-term effect upon our culture. One first has to marvel at how liberals can twist logic to rationalize a tax increase. It happens regularly from the local government...

It’s Advent and our thoughts naturally turn toward less fortunate souls, longing for basic niceties, and the call for selfless giving. Christ-like love, almsgiving, and prayer are staples of this anticipatory time which brings in the new Church year. The scripture readings at Mass remind us of those in need and our moral obligation toward them. What a sad statement about current times, then, that we are forced to look a gift horse in the mouth. No, not the gifts we receive, but the gifts we give.As the giving season continues, as well as the rest of the year, we are often...

The Salvation Army on Tuesday settled a decade-old lawsuit that charged it with engaging in religious discrimination by requiring its government-funded social service employees to reveal their beliefs and to agree to act in accordance with the Christian gospel. As part of the settlement, approved by a federal judge in Manhattan, the Salvation Army will distribute to its New York employees who work in programs that receive government financing a document stating that they need not adhere to the group’s religious principles while doing their jobs, nor may they be asked about their religious beliefs. The Salvation Army, which is...

Salvation Army 1312. Does the Catholic Church recognize the Salvation Army as in any way representative of genuine Christianity? No. As a religious body the Salvation Army is a form of Protestantism which the Catholic Church cannot but reject. It was founded by William Booth, an ex-Wesleyan minister. Disagreeing with Methodist ways, he left the Wesleyans in 1861 to become an independent evangelist. In 1865 he and his wife began to devote themselves to street preaching and rescue work in the slums of London. In 1877 he organized his converts into the Salvation Army, with himself as General, with...
