A Christian nursing home in Switzerland must allow assisted suicide or lose its charitable statusA Swiss court has ruled that a Christian nursing home must either permit assisted suicide on its premises or give up its charitable status. The nursing home, which is run by the Salvation Army, the UK-based Christian charity, lost a legal challenge to new assisted suicide rules. The regulations, introduced about a year ago, compel charities caring for the sick and elderly to offer assisted suicide when a patient or resident requests it. The nursing home objected on the grounds that the law violated the core...

Police say Salvation Army employees in Columbus found dozens of Polaroid pictures in a plastic donation bin that showed a man molesting a child. Police say they identified Gary Sovie because the bag also contained pieces of his mail. Grove City police say Sovie admitted he was in the photos and that they were taken about 16 years ago.

Judy trained her Dalmation Brandy to ring the bell that goes with the traditional red kettle. She says when she brings her dog along to her spot at the local grocery store, donations nearly double. She hopes to be doing this for many years to come since Brandy is just two years old. Map My News

Greeting warmly a delegation led by General André Cox, the Pope said Catholics and Salvationists, together with other Christians, recognise that those in need have a special place in God’s heart – so much so, that the Lord himself became poor for our sake. As a result, the Pope said, Catholics and Salvationists often meet at the same peripheries of society. I pray, he concluded, that all of Christ’s disciples can contribute with the same conviction and dynamism that the Salvation Army demonstrates in its devoted and highly appreciated service. Founded by former Methodist minister William Booth in 1865 as...

With the attempt to limit the deductibility of contributions to charities by high-earners, the Obama Administration has opened a multi-front attack against the American tradition of “neighbor helping neighbor” and financially successful people turning large portions of their wealth over to charities that improve the American culture in august manners. The governmental power grab competes with the attempts to control the financial sector for its significance and may exceed it in the long-term effect upon our culture. One first has to marvel at how liberals can twist logic to rationalize a tax increase. It happens regularly from the local government...

It’s Advent and our thoughts naturally turn toward less fortunate souls, longing for basic niceties, and the call for selfless giving. Christ-like love, almsgiving, and prayer are staples of this anticipatory time which brings in the new Church year. The scripture readings at Mass remind us of those in need and our moral obligation toward them. What a sad statement about current times, then, that we are forced to look a gift horse in the mouth. No, not the gifts we receive, but the gifts we give.As the giving season continues, as well as the rest of the year, we are often...

Salvation Army 1312. Does the Catholic Church recognize the Salvation Army as in any way representative of genuine Christianity? No. As a religious body the Salvation Army is a form of Protestantism which the Catholic Church cannot but reject. It was founded by William Booth, an ex-Wesleyan minister. Disagreeing with Methodist ways, he left the Wesleyans in 1861 to become an independent evangelist. In 1865 he and his wife began to devote themselves to street preaching and rescue work in the slums of London. Spring break is either upon Ann Arbor families or will soon arrive to scoop up students sending them bursting out of schools doors with the ferocity of unbridled pent-up spirit. Of course most kids will be thinking about everything from short trips out of town to getting away from the books, classrooms, and endless studying. Parents on the other hand might be thinking of a short and much-needed break from the unending cycle of shuttling their children from one school to another and from one extra curricular engagement to another. Whew! Time out on that! Well while spring break can...

Churches and other faith-based organizations that receive government funds, beware. In an agreement that will be enforced by a federal court, government agencies in New York have agreed to monitor the Salvation Army to ensure that it doesn't impose religion on the people its serves through its tax-funded social services. The agreement just effects the Salvation Army's social work in New York, but it's more than a cautionary tale for religious groups in this era of government-backed faith-based initiatives. "With this settlement, government is watching out," co-counsel Deborah Karpatkin of the N.Y. Civil Liberties Union said in a statement. "It...

Amid the rash of appeals for Haiti donations has come a call from one of the most prominent voices on the American right for people to hang on to their cash because Barack Obama might steal it. Rush Limbaugh, the most popular radio talkshow host, who is sometimes described as the real leader of the Republican party, says Americans should not give a penny to a population struggling for survival after the earthquake. Limbaugh agreed with a caller suspicious that the White House website was being used to direct funds to the American Red Cross. "Would you trust the money's...

I dont know if this has been posted..... As a Katrina survivor I will tell you that the Red Cross and The Salvation Army were heros... You can text the word Haiti to 90999 to donate $10.00 to the relief efforts. I intend to donate much more than this but I found this to be a very convenient way to do something.

Here is video of a Salvation Army aid worker talking with MSNBC about the "absolute chaos and pandemonium" he is seeing in Haiti in the wake of the Earthquake yesterday. During the interview, the man broke down and cried saying, "it is the most horrific thing I have ever seen." Meanwhile, the first estimates of the death toll are coming out. Haitian officials have estimated between 100,000-500,000 people may have perished, although they admit they have no way of knowing: Haitians are piling bodies along the devastated streets of their capital after a powerful earthquake flattened the president's palace and...
