The Unanimous Declaration of Independence made by the Delegates of the People of Texas in General Convention at the town of Washington on the 2nd day of March 1836. When a government has ceased to protect the lives, liberty and property of the people, from whom its legitimate powers are derived, and for the advancement of whose happiness it was instituted, and so far from being a guarantee for the enjoyment of those inestimable and inalienable rights, becomes an instrument in the hands of evil rulers for their oppression. When the Federal Republican Constitution of their country, which they have...

Texas State Teachers Association throws support behind Strayhorn BY JOHN REYNOLDS AVALANCHE-JOURNAL Republican turned Independent gubernatorial candidate Carole Keeton Strayhorn picked up the endorsement of the Texas State Teachers Association on Tuesday. The group, however, won't be able to help Strayhorn collect the 45,000-plus signatures that she will need to get on the ballot for the November general election. The TSTA is encouraging all of its members to take part in the party primaries, spokesman Richard Kouri said. Because of several high-profile legislative races, "we certainly believe our members should be involved," he said. Strayhorn, currently the state's comptroller, had...

Was Texas built on ethnic cleansing? Assertions in book by an Oklahoma history professor might rile proud Texans. By Mike Cox SPECIAL TO THE AMERICAN-STATESMAN Sunday, November 20, 2005 Last summer, while I was visiting my bookseller friend Felton Cochran in his San Angelo bookstore, he picked up a copy of the fall University of Oklahoma Press catalog and with clear disdain showed me a blood red photograph of a Comanche chief wearing a U.S. Cavalry hat with a star on its crown. The "X" in the word "Texas" had been superimposed over the Indian's face in red ink. "Have...

FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas (Army News Service, July 20, 2005) -- Hurricane Emily came ashore July 20 but wasn’t packing the wallop residents and tourists of the South Texas shore area originally expected. While the South Padre Islands still took a beating with high winds and heavy rain, it was not enough of a blow for any of the 126 supply-laden trucks poised at a staging area at Fort Sam Houston to pull out and head south. The trucks, loaded with everything from water and food to cots and generators, packed the field on Wilson Street Sunday night as part...

El Camino Real to become historic trail By The Associated Press Overcoming private property concerns, Congress has passed legislation that would designate El Camino Real de los Tejas, which stretches from the Rio Grande near Eagle Pass, Texas, to Natchitoches, La., as a National Historic Trail. El Camino Real was a corridor of trails used by settlers, immigrants, Indians and the military. The trail is a combination of routes totaling almost 2,600 miles. It also served as a path for such Texas heroes as Davy Crockett and Sam Houston, who fought for Texas independence from Mexico. "This legislation grants the...

Okay, okay... I know this is late for The Birthday, but I just received it. I checked snopes and they don't seem to have it yet. The e-mail came from a woman whose brother went to high school with Bum at French High School (Beaumont, Tx), so I'm thinking he really wrote it. It sure sounds like him, anyway. Does anyone know him personally so we can verify? HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TEXAS -- FROM BUM PHILLIPS Being Texan by Bum PhillipsDear Friends, Last year, I wrote a small piece about what it means to me to be a Texan. My...

For all of her secret life as the wife of a soldier in Santa Anna's army, Patty Tristan has tried to adhere to one policy. No camping in the mud. There was no such luck this weekend, when Tristan and more than 200 other people gathered at San Jacinto Battleground State Historical Park to recreate the 1836 victory that gave Texas its independence from Mexico. The battle re-enactment was cancelled after a thunderstorm Saturday morning was capped by a lightning strike to the 570-foot tall monument in the middle of the park. Lightning, static electricity and 100 pounds of black...

Who paid nearly $300,000 for a historic Bowie knife? A Dallasite - but he's not talking 12/28/2002 By KIMBERLY DURNAN / Dallas Web Staff When a Dallas businessman paid nearly $300,000 for a historic Bowie knife, it came with Texas-sized bragging rights. Only there has been no bragging. Secrecy shrouds the identity of the man who bought the sturdy knife that carved itself into Texas history in 1836. It rode into the Battle of San Jacinto with Gen. Sam Houston, a victory that secured independence for Texas. After 60 years of display in the San Jacinto Museum in La...

Despite a famous painting and at least three biographies depicting Gen. Sam Houston as having been shot in the right ankle, the man who led the battle of San Jacinto 166 years ago Sunday seems to have a leg up on historians. Richard Rice of the Sam Houston Memorial Museum in Huntsville recently found proof of the mistake in a letter Houston wrote to his wife, Margaret, on Jan. 11, 1853. After informing her he had nothing to tell ``that would cheer or delight'' her, Houston wrote: ``I suffer slightly in my left leg, from the same cause, that I...
