This isn’t the first time the wrong envelope was handed to an Oscar presenter and the incorrect winner announced. In 1964, Best Music Score presenter Sammy Davis Jr. ticked off the contenders for the category, then opened the winner’s envelope he was given — and announced a name who hadn’t even been mentioned in the group. There was polite applause, then Davis was told of the mistake.

Cancel any upcoming flights to the moon, because living in Frank Sinatra's Rat Pack home is a great reason to stay on Earth. Named "Villa Maggio," Sinatra's hideaway from Hollywood is on the market for $3.9 million. The Palm Desert, California home was a spot where Sinatra and fellow Rat Pack members Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop would hang out and get some R&R from their fans in a private location.

There are likely more than 10 things you don’t know about the Rat Pack, but the History Channel has whittled the list to a mere 10-pack and this week aired a special episode of the series “10 Things You Don’t Know About” centering on the fabled performers who first instilled swagger in Vegas. Several weeks ago, I was asked to contribute to this project to elaborate on the 10 pieces of triviata unearthed by History Channel producers. David G. Schwartz, director of UNLV's Center for Gaming Research, also was interviewed, and you can catch the full episode on the History...

The world's greatest entertainer died -- 19 years ago. His name is Sammy Davis Jr. At Michael Jackson's memorial, Motown founder Berry Gordy called the late, incredibly talented Jackson "the greatest entertainer that ever lived." Someone once said that Ginger Rogers, Fred Astaire's famous dance partner, did everything he did -- except backward and wearing high heels. Well, Sammy Davis Jr. did everything Michael Jackson did -- and more, much more -- except during Jim Crow and with one eye. Davis sang. He danced. He acted. He played piano, drums and trumpet. He did impressions of the popular celebrities of...

The life story of a Black star in a White world, a man who arguably was the world’s greatest entertainer, will not be coming to a theater near you anytime soon. If ever. During a recent interview on my radio program “The Andrea Shea King Show”, Hollywood conservative Burt Boyar, longtime friend and biographer of the late great Sammy Davis, Jr., said he’s concerned that the true story about the talented entertainer who fought and broke through racial barriers will never be seen on the silver screen. Two years ago, Boyar had negotiated a deal to sell his two biographies...

Everybody, it seemed, loved Sammy Davis Jr., and he loved them back -- with his camera. His thousands of photos stayed under wraps until his widow, Altovise Davis, agreed to release them for this book assembled by Burt Boyar, Davis' collaborator on his two memoirs, "Yes, I Can" (1965) and "Why Me" (1989). "PHOTO BY SAMMY DAVIS, JR." Text by Burt Boyar Regan Books ($49.95) ...the Hollywood scene of the 1950s, the Rat Pack antics of the 1960s, the inspiring presidential race of Robert Kennedy in 1968, the civil rights protests with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr....

WHAT MADE SAMMY RUN? Writing last week about the time when Elvis met Nixon put me in mind of Nixon's equally surprising connection to Sammy Davis. I originally discussed it in a post back in 2003 that I thought might be worth another look. I don't recall a time when Sammy Davis was not a celebrity along with the rest of the Rat Pack. Although I learned as a teenager that he had overcome obstacles galore on his way to the top -- I read his memorable autobiography, Yes, I Can -- the story stopped with his marriage to May...
