The Obama Phenomenon On a recent show, Rush Limbaugh opined that the Obama phenomenon was a “cult” and would shortly wear off as people really examined his record and positions. Perhaps, but this debunking will not happen without an awareness of how Senator Obama has achieved so much in so short a time. The phenomenon is obvious. A few examples are: Lisa Lerer from Politico: "This is not a campaign for president of the United States, this is a movement to change the world," he said as he introduced Obama last week in Baltimore. "You do not get 13,000 people...

In accordance with Guinness World Records' strict policies, the car had to drive down the highway, turn around, and make a second pass in the opposite direction within one hour. The Ultimate Aero posted 257.41 mph on the first pass and 254.88 mph on the second for an average of 256.18 mph. Official data were collected via a GPS tracking system from Austrian data acquisition company Dewetron....

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A military cargo plane carrying Florida Sen. Mel Martinez, two other senators and a House member was forced to take evasive maneuvers and dispatch flares to avoid ground fire after taking off from Baghdad. The lawmakers said their plane, a C-130, was under fire Thursday night from three rocket-propelled grenades over the course of several minutes as they left for Amman, Jordan. ``It was a scary moment,'' said Martinez, R-Fla., who said he had just taken off his body armor when he saw a bright flash outside the window. ``Our pilots were terrific. ... A C-130 aircraft carrying an Alabama senator and congressman was fired on this evening as it was flying from Baghdad to Amman, Jordan. The airplane was carrying Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., and Rep. Bud Cramer, D-Huntsville, and two other senators. Three rockets were shot at the plane and were "near misses," Shelby said in a telephone interview. He said the pilot took evasive maneuvers to avoid the rockets. The plane landed safely in Amman at about 4 p.m. central. Shelby County Schools' newest board member, Fred Johnson, wants to change "Christmas Break" to "Winter Break" on the school calendar. "I want to make it inclusive of every religious group," he said. Johnson's unexpected declaration, during a recent discussion of the 2007-08 and 2008-09 school calendars, did not sit well with all board members. "This is America. Under a spending bill passed Thursday by the Senate Appropriations Committee approximately $2.5million would be appropriated for public beach and wildlife habitat purchases on Dauphin Island out of the next federal budget. The bill was created by Republican Senator Richard Shelby of Alabama. Senator Shelby heads the subcommittee that crafted the spending bill. Why is this happening, you ask? Because Shelby knows Dauphin Island needs these things for its continued growth as a socio-economic entity. Because Dauphin Island officials don't have the resources to do this themselves. And because he's in a position to allocate a small portion of pork...

During my recent county visits throughout the state, one issue was brought up at every meeting – Illegal Immigration. My goal during these meetings is to learn from Alabamians about the problems they face each day and issues that concern them. These meetings provided me a true understanding of the concerns Alabamians have about illegal immigration and I want you to know that I agree. This is a problem that must be addressed immediately and comprehensively. I believe the first step in immigration reform should be to stem the flow of illegal aliens moving across our borders. ATHENS — U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby could easily answer questions about Jesus and abortion Monday at Athens High School. How to deal with the conservatively estimated 12 million illegal aliens in the United States required a more complex answer that included Shelby disagreeing with President Bush. "The immigration system is broken," said Shelby, R-Tuscaloosa, who referred to Bush's temporary worker program as one problem. In 2004, Bush proposed a temporary worker program to match willing foreign workers with willing U.S. employers when no Americans would fill their jobs. These temporary workers must either return to their home countries at the...

The doughty band of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac reformers isn't beaten yet. Senate Banking Committee Chairman Richard Shelby plans to mark up a bill this week to protect taxpayers against the risky business of these "government-sponsored enterprises," and the question is whether he can coax enough skittish Republicans to pass it. The Alabama Senator's proposal is a quantum improvement over the non-reform that passed the House Financial Services Committee earlier this year. In particular, it would force Fan and Fred to reduce their portfolios of mortgage-backed securities, a source of great profit for the companies but also of significant...

WHY THE FLAT TAX IS A GOOD IDEA By: Senator Richard Shelby In May of this year, Congress passed a $330 billion tax cut. I strongly supported this initiative, and in fact, I would have preferred an even more robust tax cut. During the tax debate, I also introduced legislation that would change our current taxpaying system, but in an entirely different way - it’s called the flat tax. Flat tax legislation would repeal the current Internal Revenue Code and replace it with a flat tax rate that would apply to all taxpayers. This means that all taxpayers would be...
