2 years and two days ago, I had never shot a gun. I didn't want to touch a gun. I didn't want guns in the house, didn't want guns in my life. No, no, no. No guns. No. I didn't like guns. A textbook case of hoplophobia, that was me. Mike spent a long time talking me into going to the range. I almost chickened out. I remember sitting on the couch, so afraid that I was near tears, saying, "No. I can't. I just can't, I don't want to..." "Just try it once. It'll be okay, nothing bad will...

Only “tens of seconds” will be available each day for a favorable launch of a ship-based SM-3 interceptor missile, the senior officer said. “The window is small, … but we’re looking...

According to some reports, Cho Seung-Hui, the man suspected in the killings at Virginia Tech, may have written Islamic references on himself prior to the shootings: Sources [said] that the words "ISMAIL AX" were also found written in red ink on the inside of one of Cho's arms. The reference may be to the Islamic account of the Biblical sacrifice of Abraham, where God commands the patriarch to sacrifice his own son. Abraham begins to comply, but God intervenes at the last moment to save the boy. In the Jewish and Christian traditions, the son is Isaac, father of the...

The army said the soldiers opened fire after guerrillas approached the force in a "threatening manner." It identified hitting two of the three militants in the group. The clash underscored the fragility of a week-old truce that ended 34 days of fighting. Israel is keeping troops in southern Lebanon until Lebanese troops and U.N. peacekeepers take up positions.

The dispute between dominant species over shared habitat in the West is escalating. The proposal emphasizes continued protections for endangered species, and it states that such measures "shall be directed at the offending animal" while not jeopardizing the "viability of predator populations." The "offending animal" is the one perceived as a threat to people and livestock. There now are more than 1,000 wolves in the Northern Rockies region. In Idaho alone, the offspring of 35 Canadian wolves now number more than 500. Their main prey are...deer and elk. But they have attacked domestic animals as well...through 2005...( at least )...
