Today is the official publication date of The Dominant Animal: Human Evolution and the Environment by Paul and Anne Ehrlich. The release of this book was timed to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the publication of Paul Ehrlich's once exceedingly popular "The Population Bomb" in 1968. If you expect to see much about either of these books in the mainstream media, you are in for a big disappointment. The MSM is avoiding the whole subject of Paul Ehrlich and his apocalyptic "The Population Bomb" like the plague nowadays. The reason is probably because it might draw embarrassing attention to...

Simon Cowell, the British-accented and sometimes condescending talent judge of television's mega-hit program "American Idol," was stunned by the singing of a 47-year-old church volunteer who claims she's never been kissed but whose amazing performance has catapulted her to sudden celebrity.

This was strictly an Indiana protest against taxes held in the north end of the rotunda at the Indiana statehouse. This was an excellent warmup to the nation wide April 15 teaparty. Some of the topics discussed were “Increasing Debt: Mortgaging Our Children’s Future,” “The Colts, Pacers and the Capital Improvement Board,” “Run over by the Speedway Redevelopment Commission,” “Lobbying and Ethics Reform,” “Transparency and Accountability in Government,” “Pay to Play Politics, Indiana Style,” and “Fun and Games in Evansville.” The protest started at 1130 and lasted for about an hour and a half. It was civil in the Hoosier...

Excerpt - In May 2006, Clinton herself had interviewed another experienced campaign consultant, Steve Hildebrand, but had turned him down. The time was not right. And she had plenty of time. But it would prove to be a costly mistake. A few months later, Steve Hildebrand would play a key role in persuading Barack Obama to run for president. Hillary still was not worried. She would put together a great campaign team, a Dream Team. It did not turn out that way. “Happy families are alike,” Leo Tolstoy famously wrote. “Every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” The...

Officers' tribute to hero cat Simon ... 'able seaman' ROYAL Navy officers who survived a siege that killed 17 of their comrades nearly 60 years ago will pay tribute to the cat credited with saving their lives. Simon the cat received the “animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross” for gallantry after he protected food stores on the HMS Amethyst from an infestation of rats, despite being badly injured in shelling by Chinese Communist forces during the country’s civil war. One of the survivors, Commander Stuart Hett, who was appointed “Cat Officer” with the duty of sorting hundreds...

Starting last fall, when Giuliani first called Bill Simon and said he was running for president, Simon, 56, has been more responsible than anyone for Giuliani's policy education, and he has been the agent charged with managing the sometimes eager, sometimes awkward relationship between the former mayor of a liberal city and the conservative establishment. Well before Giuliani said publicly that he would be a candidate, Simon put him through a rolling seminar that those in the campaign called Simon University, bringing in thinkers to brief Giuliani on key issues. The result is that though many of Giuliani's campaign operatives...

In their push this week to try to override President Bush's veto of an expansion of the State Children's Health Insurance Programs (SCHIP), congressional Democrats called on singer/songwriter Paul Simon to press their case and to press Republicans to join in the attempted override. "The president's veto of the reauthorization of SCHIP appears to be a heartless act," said Simon at a press conference Tuesday with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and other Democratic leaders. Paul Simon is the co-founder of Children's Health Fund (CHF), a group that provides mobile health care to poor children in urban and rural areas....

Humble salesman stuns judges with opera classic Makes Idol judge Simon Cowell's jaw drop May perform in front of the Queen A MOBILE phone salesman from Wales has stunned the judges of a British talent show with his rendition of an opera classic. Paul Potts, 36, sang Nessun Dorma – made famous by Luciano Pavarotti – for the judges on Britain's Got Talent TV show, who are searching for an act to perform in front of the Queen at the Royal Variety Performance and win $A250,000. It was a daunting prospect, not only singing for a huge TV audience,...

With considerable frequency, given that the boss is a megamillionaire celebrity with a resort home in Idaho, A-list invitations everywhere and a private plane at his beck and call, the staff of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger issues one-sentence advisories to the press Sunday nights or Monday mornings: "The governor has returned to the state." For the next 10 months, those who work for a few other politicians might have to adopt that routine as well. Rudy Giuliani's staff, for instance, or Hillary Clinton's, or John Edwards', or Barrack Obama's or John McCain's. They, too, will return to California again and again...

Bill Simon, an unsuccessful 2002 California gubernatorial candidate, former federal prosecutor under Giuliani and bedrock social conservative, delivered a spirited intro. "He comforted us. He inspired us in what was one of the darkest moments in our history," Simon said, extolling Giuliani's leadership after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. "Extraordinary times cry out for extraordinary leadership, and these as such times." "It would be fair to say that Bill Simon is using his personal cachet to vouch for Giuliani," said Jon Fleischman, a conservative Republican activist and publisher of the Flash Report political newsletter. "Giuliani is a moderate on social...

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) -- New York Islanders forward Chris Simon was suspended indefinitely by the NHL on Friday for his stick-swinging hit to the face of Rangers center Ryan Hollweg. Simon was given a match penalty for deliberate attempt to injure late in Thursday night's 2-1 loss to the Rangers. The length of the suspension won't be determined until after a disciplinary hearing. That hasn't been scheduled but is expected to take place next week, likely in Toronto.

In reaction to your 25,000 signed petitions that were sent to former US President Jimmy Carter protesting his book, "Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid," Mr. Carter has responded. In a hand-written letter to Rabbi Marvin Hier, the Center’s dean and founder, President Carter accused the Center of "falsehood and slander." Rabbi Hier responded, in part, "Let me say, Mr. President, that I am not one who believes that Israel is infallible ... the only reason there is no peace in the Middle East is because of Islamic extremists who refuse to compromise, not because of the State of Israel.” Read the...

Idol" Sparks New Controversy on Access Hollywood By Laura Saltman The show is only back two days and already "American Idol" is sparking controversy. Today the buzz all around my office is about how mean-spirited the show is during the audition rounds. While I was out having dinner, an email came over my blackberry from our music producer, Nancy Harrison, who was on the east coast watching the show, "I must say tonight's episode was quite disturbing. Two of the Seattle contestants--Kenneth and Jonathan--were clearly limited... and the judges still poked fun of them. I found this to be in...

We consider them together, not only because in the lists of the Twelve they are always mentioned next to one...

Former Clinton political hitman James Carville, who recently touted New York Sen. Hillary Clinton for a 2008 presidential run, is reportedly behind an advertising campaign attacking President Bush for his 1990 sale of Harken Energy stock as well as his ties to the oil industry in general. American Family Voices, a group described by the New York Times as "secretive," has paid to run a 30-second commercial on cable news programs in Washington, D.C., and in New York through Thursday. The ad blasts President Bush as "sly like a fox" for talking down his dealings with Harken Energy, which Democrats...

What a pair - these funny little creatures are albino Pygmy Marmoset monkeys, born at the Froso Zoo in Ostersund, Sweden this week. The Pygmy Marmoset, the world's smallest monkey which all grown up reaches just 35cm and weighs barely 100 grams, is quite rare, but this albino pair is particularly unusual. The pair, pictured snuggled into a zookeeper's thumb almost as big as them, are twins, a common occurrence in Pygmy Marmosets, which are more likely to be born in pairs than single births. The small squirrel-like critters are expert tree-climbers, they have ringed tails that are as long...

After watching American Idol for numerous seasons, I have come to the conclusion that a GREAT DEAL of these contestants have GOT TO BE DUmmies!!Anyone who watches the show would have to agree that some of these people are SOOOOO CLUELESS to their singing ability... LEGENDARY anchorman Walter Cronkite is being pushed round town in a wheelchair, propelled by his girlfriend Joanna Simon, sister of Carly. But there's no emergency; a spokeswoman says Cronkite, 89, has been ordered to rest while he waits for a skin graft to heal on the back of his leg, following an operation to fix an Achilles tendon he injured several years ago playing tennis. The indomitable newsman will be in Vienna in the new year for WNET's annual "Great Performances" spectacular regardless.

Bill Simon, the investor and philanthropist who was the Republican nominee against Gray Davis in 2002, has sent a letter to supporters informing them that he won’t be a candidate for state treasurer next year as he had planned. In the letter, Simon cites the oft-used “personal” reasons for backing out, saying he wants to spend more time with his family. But this is one case where that might actually be true. Simon has confided in friends in recent months that the unanticipated pressures involved in caring for their developmentally disabled 17-year-old son have been all-consuming for him and his...

Abel Maldanado (sic) opened his Controller's Monday, stories started circulating that Republican Assemblyman Keith Richman would move from the Treaturer's race where his trails Simon by 40+ points to the Controller's race. Tony Strickland would benefit from that move because that would mean two moderates - Richman (voted against Arnold's budget because it did not include tax increases) and Maldonado would be fighting it out against a lone conservative. Republican candidates (or potential candidates) for Senate...

In that sermon, Mudairis, who appears frequently on Palestinian Television, charged that, "The Jews are the cancer spreading all over the world...the Jews are a virus like...

Remembering The Zebra Killings By James Lubinskas FrontPageMagazine.com | August 30, 2001 MOST SERIAL KILLINGS in America take on a life of their own through movies, books and documentaries. The crimes of Charles Manson, Jeffrey Dahmer and The Son Sam are still well remembered years after they committed. Yet there is one set of serial killings that been almost completely forgotten and is rarely mentioned popular culture. The Zebra Killings occurred in the Francisco bay area between 1972 1974 and left 71 people dead. They were dubbed the Zebra because of the radio channel used the police investigating the case...

Leftist “militants” ushered in the new year in Colombia in true form: Members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) murdered 17 peasants, including 6 women and 4 children, who were gathered to celebrate New Year’s Eve. When I say “true form,” I mean FARC was practicing the art that the extreme left has mastered, perhaps invented: terrorism. On this New Year’s Eve, the FARC was proving it believes the “end justifies the means,” as it is the grotesque, disfigured child of Lenin, Stalin, Mao, and, yes, even Hitler -- remember, he was a National Socialist (Nazi). FARC is...

... All this sounds plausible on the surface. Bring all these cats and dogs under one master. Maybe they will do a better job than they do now of communicating with each other, so that the sum of their knowledge about terrorism suspects can be acted upon. This would require a massive upgrading and linkage of their separate and often appallingly obsolescent computer networks. But who knows, maybe with enough new organization charts one of these days the government will get itself organized. But one wonders. A new department, Homeland Security, was created under Secretary Tom Ridge only two years...

The obscene gesture came during a heated exchange with fellow judge Paula Abdul. Cowell held his middle finger to his cheek as Abdul railed against comments made about a contestant. CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) - Former Sen. Paul Simon was memorialized in a musical and emotional service where he was hailed as a tireless champion of the oppressed and a decent man even to his adversaries. The two-hour service at a Southern Illinois University arena was downright grand for a man who was famous for his modesty. It included a 60-piece orchestra and the rousing strains of ``Battle Hymn of the Republic,'' ``America the Beautiful,'' and Beethoven's ``Ode to Joy.'' The tribute was based on the instructions of the 75-year-old Simon, who died unexpectedly Dec. 9 in Springfield after suffering complications...
