In 1984 President Ronald Reagan proclaimed July as National Ice Cream Month. He also established National Ice Cream Day as the third Sunday in July. In honor of this awesome holiday I think we should eat ice cream all day long. Here’s a suggested menu. Breakfast: waffles (with coffee ice cream and chocolate syrup)Lunch: ice cream paniniMid-afternoon snack: ice cream coneLate afternoon pick-me-up: Iced mocha (made with ice cream of course)Dinner: Ice cream casserole:Dessert: Banana splitKeep it small: you don’t want to overindulgeNightcap: your choice – a Hummer (invented in Detroit) Kahlua, rum, ice cream, a blender – what could...
  • Charles Schulz Museum Opens Snoopy-Centric Outpost in Tokyo

Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center in Santa Rosa has opened a Snoopy Museum in Tokyo. The new outpost will exhibit portions of the California collection on a rotating basis every six months. The opening exhibit is "My Favorite Peanuts," curated by Schulz's widow Jean. Boing Boing noted that fans can purchase exclusive merchandise as well as grab a bite in the Cafe Blanket restaurant or the confectionery. Snoopy's creator, Charles M. Schulz, started the wildly popular "Peanuts" series while living in Minneapolis. He relocated to Sebastopol in 1958, then Santa Rosa in 1969, where he lived until his...

The crew of an Apollo mission to the moon were so startled when they encountered strange music-like radio transmissions coming through their headsets, they didn't know whether or not to report it to NASA, it's been revealed. It was 1969, two months before Apollo 11's historic first manned landing on the moon, when Apollo 10 entered lunar orbit, which included traversing the far side of the moon when all spacecraft are out of radio contact with Earth for about an hour and nobody on Earth can see or hear them. As far as the public knew, everything about the mission...

It’s okay to feel a little trepidation before going to see The Peanuts Movie. After all, it was only a couple of months ago that the powers that be decided what the world really needed was a Muppets television show full of penis jokes and pessimistic cruelty. If the folks entrusted with Jim Henson’s creations were willing to submit Kermit and Fozzy to that kind of butchery, why should Charlie Brown and Snoopy be any safer? Well, let those trepidations slide away, because, to paraphrase Charles M. Schulz, happiness is a film about a warm puppy. The best way...

But for many fans, it wasn't merely Snoopy's brothers and sisters dragging him down. There was something fundamentally rotten about the new Snoopy, whose charm was based on his total lack of concern about what others thought of him. His confidence, his breezy sense that the world may be falling apart but one can still dance on, was worse than irritating. It was morally bankrupt. As the writer Daniel Mendelsohn put it in a piece in The New York Times Book Review, Snoopy "represents the part of ourselves-the smugness, the avidity, the pomposity, the rank egotism-most of us know we...

Director of National Intelligence James Clapper is under fire for statements he made before Congress that suggested he had no knowledge about federal government programs that collected data on millions of Americans phone calls and Internet activities. In March, Clapper said at a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing that he was not aware that the National Security Agency was involved in such large-scale efforts. The questioning of Clappers statements follow blockbuster news last week that the federal government has since 9/11 been logging millions, perhaps billions, of calls and Internet activities and as the NSAs top official goes before the same...

The outline of a figure scratched into a cave in Lapa do Santo in central-eastern Brazil is believed to be between 10,000 and 12,000 years and has been dubbed "the horny little man" because of its oversized phallus. The team of archaeologists from the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil made the discovery during excavations in 2009 but unveiled their findings in this month's PLoS ONE scientific journal. "It shows that about 11,000 years ago, there was already a very diverse manifestation of rock art in South America, so man probably arrived in the Americas much earlier than normally is...

It's not often I read about a new project that leaves me undecided whether it's totally crazy or a stroke of genius. I was recently sent a news release of such a project and, having read it over a few times, I think I'm leaning toward the latter. The idea is the brain child of British amateur astronomer Nick Howes who not only has a passion for hunting for asteroids, but also for the Space Race in particular, the Apollo era.

When the comic-strip beagle and an accomplice failed to break down a staff door, they pelted prison officers' cars with concrete missiles. Savage beagles terrorize East End By TAYLOR K. VECSEY January 31, 2010 Charlie Brown, watch your back -- a plague of vicious wild beagles has struck Long Island! These floppy-eared terrors are no lovable Snoopys -- they're abandoned hunting dogs that live in packs and have gone from humble pets to hounds from hell. Mattituck resident Dot Faszczewski came face to face with the canine menace two weeks ago, when she was set upon by a group of crazed, hungry beagles as she walked her pet dogs near her parents' Orient Point home. She said it was like a scene...

Snoopy, the irreverent dog from the "Peanuts" comic strip, took time from his World War I dogfights as world-famous flying ace to become a world-famous astronaut for NASA's Apollo 10 mission. The beagle now has a 5-foot-tall statue at Florida's Kennedy Space Center to commemorate the flight, which launched 40 years ago this month and arrived at the moon on May 21, 1969. That's when the Snoopy lunar module and the Charlie Brown command module entered lunar orbit. Apollo 10 paved the way for Apollo 11 to land men on the moon. "It went down in his life as one...

I've been given a ceramic flowerpot by my boss, and she says it was her mother's and may be worth something. It is ceramic with a relief of snoopy and a sunflower. Bottom printing list copyright as 1958 but I doubt the pot is that old. Unfortunately I think this is the only one she didn't throw away. Anyway I have googled alot and cannot find it anywhere to try and ascertain it's rarity or value. Any FReepers know anything about this type of thing?
