Director of National Intelligence James Clapper is under fire for statements he made before Congress that suggested he had no knowledge about federal government programs that collected data on millions of Americans’ phone calls and Internet activities. In March, Clapper said at a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing that he was not aware that the National Security Agency was involved in such large-scale efforts. The questioning of Clapper’s statements follow blockbuster news last week that the federal government has since 9/11 been logging millions, perhaps billions, of calls and Internet activities and as the NSA’s top official goes before the same...

The outline of a figure scratched into a cave in Lapa do Santo in central-eastern Brazil is believed to be between 10,000 and 12,000 years and has been dubbed "the horny little man" because of its oversized phallus. The team of archaeologists from the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil made the discovery during excavations in 2009 but unveiled their findings in this month's PLoS ONE scientific journal. "It shows that about 11,000 years ago, there was already a very diverse manifestation of rock art in South America, so man probably arrived in the Americas much earlier than normally is...

It's not often I read about a new project that leaves me undecided whether it's totally crazy or a stroke of genius. I was recently sent a news release of such a project and, having read it over a few times, I think I'm leaning toward the latter. The idea is the brain child of British amateur astronomer Nick Howes who not only has a passion for hunting for asteroids, but also for the Space Race — in particular, the Apollo era.

A team of astronomers are planning an epic quest to track down the 42-year-old lunar module that's adrift in the solar system. Savage beagles terrorize East End By TAYLOR K. VECSEY January 31, 2010 Charlie Brown, watch your back -- a plague of vicious wild beagles has struck Long Island! These floppy-eared terrors are no lovable Snoopys -- they're abandoned hunting dogs that live in packs and have gone from humble pets to hounds from hell. Mattituck resident Dot Faszczewski came face to face with the canine menace two weeks ago, when she was set upon by a group of crazed, hungry beagles as she walked her pet dogs near her parents' Orient Point home. She said it was like a scene...

Snoopy, the irreverent dog from the "Peanuts" comic strip, took time from his World War I dogfights as world-famous flying ace to become a world-famous astronaut for NASA's Apollo 10 mission. The beagle now has a 5-foot-tall statue at Florida's Kennedy Space Center to commemorate the flight, which launched 40 years ago this month and arrived at the moon on May 21, 1969. That's when the Snoopy lunar module and the Charlie Brown command module entered lunar orbit. Apollo 10 paved the way for Apollo 11 to land men on the moon. "It went down in his life as one...

I've been given a ceramic flowerpot by my boss, and she says it was her mother's and may be worth something. It is ceramic with a relief of snoopy and a sunflower. Bottom printing list copyright as 1958 but I doubt the pot is that old. Unfortunately I think this is the only one she didn't throw away. Anyway I have googled alot and cannot find it anywhere to try and ascertain it's rarity or value. Any FReepers know anything about this type of thing?

This Barack-Hillary Show has jumped the shark. Week after week, the same old same old. It’s gotten more tired than a Paula Abdul meltdown on “American Idol.” He wins one, she wins one. Barack’s people say, “They’re raising the bar!” Hillary’s minions say, “They’re moving the goalposts.” And America is changing the channel. Don’t the Democrats understand? This is May, a ratings sweeps months. You put your best new episodes on. Instead, we’re getting reruns from February. “Yes we can!” Obama said last night. Hey, isn’t this is where we came in? Actually, these next few days are going to...

As an animal lover, Kathy Bryan hated to put them down. But when the three wolves began trying to encircle her, she felt she didn’t have a choice. She killed two of them with shotgun blasts. A deputy sheriff later tracked down and shot the third. All had escaped from a pen at a neighbor’s house. The unusual scene played out Sunday morning at the Bryans’ home on Rock Haven Road near Hanover in Licking County. She went to investigate when her three dogs began baying. Bryan saw a wolf with its mouth around the neck of Roo the beagle....

Buy me some peanuts and cracker jack ... This familiar line from the baseball anthem "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" doesn't have the same happy meaning for Timothy Haverkamp that it does for most fans. Timothy, a first-grader from Ada Elementary, is allergic to peanuts. "He was allergic to everything when he was little. His brother is allergic to peanuts, too," Jane Haverkamp, Timothy's mother, said. "He never had a life-threatening emergency with peanuts, but we don't keep any at home." Timothy attended Wednesday's West Michigan Whitecaps game without fear of an attack. The team hosted its second...

VALDOSTA, Ga. - A MetLife blimp narrowly missed a gazebo just before it crashed Monday in south Georgia due to high winds. The pilot was forced to jump from the gondola moments before the blimp's impact. Authorities said no one was injured in the incident, which happened shortly after 5 p.m. in Lowndes County. The pilot described the crash as controlled. The blimp initially tried to land at Valdosta Regional Airport but high winds from an afternoon storm blew the ship named "Snoopy One" off course. Snoopy One is one of two MetLife blimps that cover professional sporting events around...
