I am Spartacus* because for all too long I stayed quiet. I stayed quiet because baby needed shoes (often literally) and I needed work in a biased field that would blacklist me as soon as they knew my true self. I allowed my loyalties and beliefs to be assumed from external appearances and origins – I allowed them to believe I must be extreme left because I’m female, of Latin origin, and have somewhat more than a Master’s degree in Modern Languages and Literature. (I would go back for the doctorate, I would, but I’m not willing to stay quiet...

How Obama Turned America into Venezuela Hugo Chavez's death was met with tributes from Iran, Bolivia, China and El Salvador. The Western left did not waste much time adding their withered roses to El Comandante's coffin. George Galloway called him another Spartacus. Jimmy Carter described him as a leader who fought for the "neglected and trampled." Michael Moore praised him for declaring that the oil belongs to the people. Whether or not the oil belongs to the people is a matter of some debate considering how much of it ended up in Chavez's pocket. Chavez died with an estimated net...

U.S. Rep. Allen West unveiled his first TV ad Saturday at the official South Florida kickoff of his re-election campaign in Palm Beach Gardens. With qualifying behind him, West’s team planned a busy day to start its official campaign charge. Beginning his day with about 350 members of the Martin County Republican Executive Committee, West enjoyed BBQ and a warm welcome before traveling south to Palm Beach Gardens. The congressman arrived at the Borland Center to a crowd of about 400 that had been revved up by the unveiling of his soon-to-be-released ad, which included the catchphrase, “I’m just getting...

Let’s just say they were not kidding about the blood part… As a passionate student of history I have always been interested in the story and life of the rebel slave, Spartacus. A man who shook Rome to the core yet a man we know fairly little about. Yet a legend has grown around his motives and actions and history has remembered him while forgetting countless others. Last night Starz debuted (to mixed reviews) an original series Spartacus: Blood and Sand which I made time to watch. It is produced by Robert Tapert and Sam Raimi who, a decade ago,...

The House approved by a 240-179 vote a rare resolution of disapproval Tuesday against Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) for interrupting President Barack Obama and screaming “You lie!” during last week’s joint session of Congress.

Just saw a howlingly funny new Pepsi ad set in ancient Rome. A couple of Roman soldiers ride up to a group of ragged men wearing chains. One is holding a paper bag. "Hey, guys," says a soldier, "one of you left this behind at the last rest stop. There's half a sandwich here, and a can of Pepsi. I think the guy's name is written on the bag. Yeah, it says Spartacus. Anybody here named Spartacus?" Cut to Kirk Douglas standing up and saying, "I'm Spartacus," then Tony Curtis, then the rest of the crowd. It's the actual scene...
  • Let's not read too much into the fate of ‘Alexander’(Hilarious Movie Review!)

The failure of "Alexander," the newspaper wrote, has "brutally exposed the cultural and moral divide which slices America in two." Uh-huh. "It is being suggested that a film about a global warrior with dyed blond hair and waxed legs was never going to conquer an America fresh out of a presidential election in which gay rights became a major issue." Is there another America they might be talking about? Major issue? Brutally exposed? The last thing an American movie brutally exposed was Kathy Bates in the hot-tub scene of "About Schmidt."

The Real Spartacus The real Spartacus was a freeborn provincial from Thrace (Greek, but from the hill country and not considered "a real Greek" by the Athenians or the Romans.) He may have served as an auxiliary in the Roman army in Macedonia. He deserted the army, was outlawed, captured and sold into slavery. He was eventually purchased by Lentulus Batiatus and trained at his gladiatorial school in Capua. Spartacus means "from the city of Sparta" in Latin. 73 B.C.: Spartacus escaped with 70-80 gladiators, seizing the knives in the cook's shop and a wagon full of weapons. They camped...
